Müller began his motorsport career in karting in 2004 , in which he was active until 2007. In 2008 he switched to formula racing and competed for Jenzer Motorsport in the Swiss Formula Renault , which he finished with a victory in fifth place overall. He also competed for his team in several races from three other Formula Renault championships. In 2009 Müller stayed with Jenzer Motorsport and contested his second season in the Swiss Formula Renault. He dominated the season and won the championship with nine wins from twelve races ahead of Giovanni Venturini . He also started for his racing team in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished the season in this series in eleventh place overall.
In 2010 Müller started for Jenzer Motorsport in the newly founded GP3 series . In the sprint race in Valencia , he scored his first victory in the GP3 series and with another victory finished third overall behind the champions Esteban Gutiérrez and Robert Wickens . In 2011 , Müller stayed with Jenzer Motorsport and completed his second GP3 season. With a win he ended the season as the best driver of his team in fourth place in the championship.

In 2012 , Müller switched to Formula Renault 3.5 . There he got a cockpit at International Draco Racing . With a second place as the best result, he finished the season in ninth place. With that he prevailed internally against his teammate André Negrão , who was 15th. In 2013 Müller and Negrão again formed the Draco driver pairing in the Formula Renault 3.5. In Monte Carlo , Müller first achieved his first pole position and eventually won his first race in the Formula Renault 3.5. He achieved his second victory in a wet race on the Hungaroring , where he gained a superior lead. Müller improved to fifth place in the overall standings. Within the team, he prevailed again against Negrão, who finished the season in tenth place overall.
In 2014 Müller left formula racing and switched to the DTM , where he got a place in the Audi team Rosberg . In the overall standings he was the worst Audi driver 19th. In 2015 , Müller contested his second DTM season for Team Rosberg. He chose 51 as his starting number. He finished the season in 21st place overall. He also drove in three races in the Blancpain Endurance Series . For the 2016 DTM season , Müller moved to Dept. within the Audi DTM teams . He already achieved his first podium finish with a third place at the season opener and he won for the first time in Nuremberg . He improved to ninth place in the drivers' standings.
