With Jamie Green , Paffett (three times each), Lucas Auer and Bruno Spengler (twice each), Paul di Resta and Pascal Wehrlein (once each), six former Klettwitz winners competed in the races.
Friday
Wehrlein set the fastest lap in the first practice session on Friday in 1: 39.344 minutes ahead of Rockenfeller and Edoardo Mortara .
Saturday
Paffett won the second practice session on Saturday morning in 1: 37.681 minutes ahead of di Resta and Glock.
In qualifying for the race on Saturday, Auer achieved pole position with a time of 1: 37.343 minutes, ahead of Philipp Eng in second and Spengler in third.
Auer was able to maintain his lead at the start, followed by Spengler in second place. Further back in the field there was a rear-end collision between Nico Müller and the green started behind. For both drivers, the race was over before the first corner. To salvage Green's vehicle, the safety car came onto the track, which led the drivers through the pit lane due to the blocked start and finish straight .
The restart took place after a little more than 14 minutes . Shortly afterwards there was another accident. After a collision with his brand colleague Loïc Duval , title holder René Rast came off the track and rolled over. For this reason the race was interrupted with the red flag after 17 minutes . Rast, who remained without major wounds, was then taken to the Senftenberg hospital, which he was able to leave again on Sunday morning. Duval also had to give up the race.
After a break of around 15 minutes, the track was released again and another lap was completed behind the safety car. After the restart, Auer continued to lead ahead of Spengler and Eng. After around 40 minutes, the first two drivers from the top group came to the pits with the latter two to complete their mandatory pit stop . They were followed one lap later by Auer, which meant that Glock again took the lead one lap later until his own stop. The new leader was then Robin Frijns . In the "adjusted" order of the drivers who had already changed their mandatory tires, Mortara was now ahead of Glock, Auer and Eng. A little later, Eng managed to pass Glock and Auer simultaneously in Turn 1 and then put Mortara under pressure.
Ultimately, Mortara won after a distance of 21 laps from Glock and Eng. The fastest race lap went to Daniel Juncadella in 1: 39.699 minutes . Of the 18 drivers who started, 14 reached the checkered flag, and all of the vehicles that were eliminated came from the Audi warehouse. In addition, Audi did not win any points in this race.
In the drivers' championship, Glock remained in the lead with 62 points, ahead of Paffett (45) and the new third-placed Mortara (37). In the brand classification, Mercedes (157) continued to lead ahead of BMW (125) and Audi (39).
Sunday
The rest who had an accident the day before had to forego taking part on Sunday due to the severe damage to his vehicle, which could not be repaired overnight.
In the third practice session, Müller achieved the fastest lap in 1: 38.917 minutes ahead of Green and Auer.
Pole position went to Eng, who was third on Saturday, in 1: 38.150 minutes. Behind them were Wehrlein and Paffett in second and third place.
At the start of the race, Eng maintained his lead from Wehrlein and Paffett. After the first lap, Green came to the pit for his mandatory pit stop. After a few minutes Paffett first passed Wehrlein, a little later also passed Eng and took the lead. As a result, Paffett managed to separate himself a little from Wehrlein.
After 19 minutes, Paffett pitted. Wehrlein thus took over the lead, which he held until his own stop shortly afterwards. After 38 minutes of racing, Duval was the last driver to complete the pit stop. As a result, Paffett took the lead again from the new runner-up Marco Wittmann and Wehrlein. The three first placed crossed the finish line in this order after 34 laps. For Paffett it was the second win of the season and his 22nd victory in the DTM overall. Wittmann achieved the fastest race lap in 1: 39.395 minutes.
In the drivers' standings, Paffett remained in second place with 71 points, but moved up to one point on the still leading Glock (72). Wehrlein (39) was the new third. Among the manufacturers, Mercedes (212) extended its lead over BMW (164) and Audi (52).
