Joel Eriksson (born June 28, 1998 ) is a Swedish automobile racing driver . He has been competing in the DTM for BMW since 2018 .

Career

Beginnings in karting and formula racing (2007-2017)

Eriksson started his motorsport career in 2007 in karting , where he remained active until 2013.

2014 joined Eriksson in the single-seater racing and was the of Motopark Academy supervised Lotus cockpit in the team ADAC Formula Masters . He won a race and finished fifth overall as the best driver in his racing team. In 2015 Eriksson stayed with Motopark and drove in the German Formula 4 championship , the successor series to the ADAC Formula Masters. He won seven races and finished the season with 299 to 347 points behind Marvin Dienst in second place overall. In addition, Eriksson contested three races in the 2015 Northern European Formula 4 Championship , where he finished on the podium twice.

In 2016 Eriksson stayed at Motopark again and switched to the European Formula 3 championship . He won a race and was on the podium a total of ten times. As the best newcomer to the series, he finished the season in fifth place in the drivers' standings. In 2017 Eriksson took part in his second European Formula 3 championship. He drove again for Motopark. Although he was able to win seven races, he was defeated by Lando Norris for the championship and finished second overall.

DTM (since 2018)

For season 2018 Eriksson left the Formula racing and switched to Racing Bart Mampaey in the DTM , where he became a cockpit in a BMW won and teammate Bruno Spengler and Philipp Eng was. In the second race of the season at Hockenheim , he scored points for the first time in fourth place. He scored his first DTM victory at the Sunday race in Misano . With 72 points he finished the season 14th in the drivers' championship.

In 2019 , Eng and Eriksson stayed with Mampaey. With Sheldon van der Linde , who replaced Spengler, they got a new teammate. In Zolder , Eriksson finished second in Saturday's race and achieved his first podium of the season. In the Saturday race in Nuremberg he reached the podium again with third place. After eight out of 18 races, he finished tenth in the overall ranking. After the end of the season, BMW announced that Eriksson would not drive for BMW in the DTM in the 2020 season.
