The North European Formula 4 Championship , also known as SMP F4 Championship , (official F4 NEZ Championship certified by FIA ) was an automotive racing series after the FIA - Formula 4 -Reglement. The racing events were held in the FIA's Northern European Zone (NEZ) in Estonia , Finland and Russia . The North European Formula 4 Championship was held for the first time in 2015 .

history

After the FIA decided to introduce Formula 4 regulations in 2013 , the Northern European Formula 4 championship was created for the 2015 season . The championship is sanctioned by the motorsport federations (ASN) AKK-Motorsport (Finland) and the Russian Automobile Federation (Russia) and organized by the Finnish racing team Koiranen GP and the SMP Racing project of the Russian-Finnish oligarch Boris Rotenberg . The series was officially promoted and marketed as the SMP F4 Championship . The FIA uses the designation F4 NEZ Championship for the championship. In its first season, the championship held races in Estonia , Finland and Russia . After the 2018 season the championship lost its FIA status, SMP-Racing founded the RAF Formula 4 Championship as a successor series, which only races in Russia.

The term Northern Europe for this championship refers to the Northern European Zone (NEZ) of the FIA. This comprises a total of nine countries: Denmark , Estonia, Finland, Iceland , Latvia , Lithuania , Norway , Russia and Sweden .

Course of the race weekend

Each race weekend consisted of two 60-minute free practice sessions on Friday. A 30-minute qualifying and the first race took place on Saturday. The second and third races were held on Sunday. All races had a distance of 25 minutes + 1 lap.

vehicle

The Tatuus F4-T014 chassis with an Abarth 1.4 liter T-Jet engine was used in the Northern European Formula 4 championship . The tires were provided by Hankook .

particularities

In the northern European Formula 4 championship, only drivers who start with a license from the northern European zone were rated. All other drivers were treated as guest starters. The first three drivers in the championship received high-value grants to help the drivers move to the European Formula 3 championship . The master received a premium of 350,000 euros , the second a premium of 150,000 euros and the third a premium of 20,000 euros.

In contrast to other FIA Formula 4 championships, in the Northern European Formula 4 championship all vehicles were used by a single racing team - Koiranen GP .

In addition, there were some deviations from the sporty FIA Formula 4 regulations. In the second race, the starting grid was also determined by the result of the first race, but the starting grid was not rotated so that the starting grid for the second race was identical to the final classification for the first race. In addition, there was only one bonus point for the fastest time in qualifying.

Television broadcast

The races were streamed live on the official website. The races will then be available on the company's own YouTube channel, the SMP F4 Championship .
