Mike Rockenfeller (born October 31, 1983 in Neuwied ) is a German automobile racing driver . In 2005 he won the GT2 class of the FIA GT Championship and in 2008 the LMP1 class of the Le Mans Series . In 2010 he decided together on an Audi R15 TDI Plus, with its two Team / co-drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas , the 24-hour race at Le Mans itself. He has been a works driver for Audi in the DTM since 2007 . From 2012 he started for Phoenix Racing . In 2013 he won the DTM drivers' championship.
Career
Rockenfeller first sat in a kart at the age of ten and later decided to get involved in motorsport . In 1995 he started karting , which he practiced until 2000. In 2000 he won the overall ranking of the “Jörg van Ommen Kart Series”, which earned him a cockpit in Formula König for the following season. In this series he managed a victory and he finished the season in fourth place in the championship.
At the end of 2001, Rockenfeller took part in a training course for young Porsche drivers and then received a works contract. He started for the UPS-Porsche-Junior-Team in the German Porsche Carrera Cup and finished his first season in tenth place overall. He also took part in four races of the Porsche Supercup . In 2003 Rockenfeller won a race in the German Porsche Carrera Cup. In the championship he had to admit defeat only Frank Stippler with 136 to 126 points . He also competed again in the Porsche Supercup and celebrated his first victory in this racing series. In 2004 Rockenfeller completed his third season in the German Porsche Carrera Cup. He was on the podium in every race, won five out of nine races and won the championship title ahead of Wolf Henzler . In the Porsche Supercup, in which he competed in six races, he finished five races on the podium and scored two victories. Rockenfeller also made his debut in a Porsche 996 GT3 RS in 2004 at the Le Mans 24-hour race .
In 2005 Rockenfeller moved to the FIA GT Championship . With his team-mate Marc Lieb , he won the GT2 classification in six of eleven races, including the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans , he and Lieb and Leo Hindery were class winners of the GT2. He also started in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), which he finished in tenth place in the GT standings, and a race in the Grand-Am Sports Car Series . In 2006 Rockenfeller finished eighth in the GT2 and LMP2 ratings of the ALMS. He was more successful in the Grand-Am Sports Car Series, in which he won two races and was fifth in the DP standings. He also competed in a race in the FIA GT Championship and won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring .

In 2007 Rockenfeller switched to Audi and competed in the DTM for Team Rosberg . He received a previous year's model of the Audi A4 DTM . In his second race in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben , he achieved his first DTM podium with a third place. With two more points, he finished the season with eleven points in twelfth place overall. His team mate Lucas Luhr only managed to score one point during the season. Rockenfeller also competed for Audi in an ALMS race and the Le Mans 24-hour race . In both racing series, he competed in an LMP1 vehicle. He also took part in a Grand-Am Sports Car Series race in a Porsche. In 2008 Rockenfeller got a new team-mate in the DTM : Markus Winkelhock . Both pilots scored six points. Since Rockenfeller achieved the best result of the two with a fifth place, he finished the season ahead of Winkelhock in eleventh place overall. Rockenfeller was more successful in the Le Mans Series . Together with Alexandre Prémat he won the championship title in the LMP1 category. At the 24-hour race of Le Mans , he achieved fourth place overall with Luhr and Prémat, which was his best result to date. In addition, Rockenfeller again took part in one race each of the ALMS and the Grand-Am Sports Car Series.
In 2009 Rockenfeller lost to his team-mate for the first time in the DTM. While Winkelhock was tenth, Rockenfeller finished the season in fourteenth overall. He also took part in an ALMS race and the Le Mans 24-hour race that year . In 2010 Rockenfeller switched to Team Phoenix within the DTM , which also fielded Audi “annual cars”. At his new racing team he met Prémat, with whom he had already contested races in Le Mans prototypes. After Rockenfeller had already scored points in four races, his best result of the season followed with a third place in the second race at the Hockenheimring . He finished the season in seventh place in the championship as the best driver of an Audi year-old car. He also left two Audi drivers behind with the current model. In 2010 Rockenfeller was also successful in sports car races . After winning the Daytona 24-hour race in January , he took overall victory at the Le Mans 24-hour race in June . Together with Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas , he drives an Audi R15 TDI Plus in the French endurance race . In 2010 Rockenfeller also took part in one race each in the Le Mans Series and the FIA GT3 European Championship .
In 2011 Rockenfeller again took part in sports car and touring car races in parallel. In the DTM he switched to Abt Sportsline before this season and received a current racing car for the first time. At the second race in Zandvoort , Rockenfeller won his first DTM race. At the fourth race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz he was represented by Tom Kristensen , as he had to take a break from a sports car race a week before to be on the safe side after an accident. At the end of the season he finished sixth overall. In sports car racing, Rockenfeller takes part in the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) for Audi . When 24-hour race at Le Mans , which was one of this season in ILMC, Rockenfeller had on Saturday night in the dark a serious accident. While lapping he was hit by the Ferrari 458 Italia GTC controlled by Robert Kauffman and hit the barrier at a speed of 307 km / h. Rockenfeller was able to leave his Audi R18 on his own and was then taken to a hospital. Rockenfeller's Audi brand colleague Allan McNish had previously had a serious accident. As a result, he canceled a DTM race and participation in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. In 2011 , Rockenfeller competed in a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series .
In 2012 , Rockenfeller returned to Phoenix in the DTM, who also fielded the new Audi DTM vehicle with the Audi A5 DTM . Rockenfeller's best result was a second place in Zandvoort. In this, he lost the lead in the race to his brand colleague Edoardo Mortara . As fourth overall, Rockenfeller was the best Audi driver and also the best placed driver without a win. Rockenfeller also took part in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series and started the 24-hour race at Le Mans . There he finished third together with Marco Bonanomi and Oliver Jarvis .
In 2013 , Rockenfeller stayed with Phoenix in the DTM. In the second race at Brands Hatch , Rockenfeller won from pole position. He finished second on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz. In Wolokolamsk he achieved his second win of the season starting from pole position. At the penultimate race of the season in Zandvoort, a second place was enough for Rockenfeller to win the drivers' championship early. He also went to a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series in the DP class.
In 2014 Rockenfeller competed again for Phoenix in the DTM. With three second places as the best results, he was third overall. In 2014 , he also competed in three races in the newly founded United SportsCar Championship (USCC).
In 2015 Rockenfeller stayed with Phoenix in the DTM. He chose 99 as his starting number. He scored a victory in Volokolamsk and reached tenth place overall. He also took part again in races of the USCC and he started in the Blancpain Endurance Series.
In 2016 Rockenfeller completed another DTM season for Phoenix. He returned to Abt for the last race weekend and represented Mattias Ekström there . He finished the season in 19th place in the drivers' championship.
In 2017 , Rockenfeller had a serious accident in the second race at the Norisring when Gary Paffett spun and crashed into Rockenfeller's driver's door. Rockenfeller and Paffett were able to leave their vehicles on their own, but Rockenfeller had broken his left foot. He nevertheless took part in the next race in Moscow without using his left foot in the race. Despite the limitation, he finished the race in second place. Rockenfeller won his first win of the season in Zandvoort. He crossed the finish line in second place, but was credited with the victory after the actual winner, Marko Wittmann, was subsequently disqualified. He finished the season with six finishes in the top three including a win in 4th place overall.
In 2018 Rockenfeller competed again for Audi Sport Team Phoenix and finished 11th overall with two second places in Hockenheim and Spielberg.
In 2019 Rockenfeller stayed with Phoenix again, but drove with a new paint job from the exhaust system manufacturer Akrapovič after having been using " Schaeffler " paint for seven years . Already in the first race of the season he reached a 2nd place. Rockenfeller achieved third place at the Norisring . He scored his first win of the season on the next race weekend in Assen . He won the race after starting in 3rd place and, unlike his fellow brand colleague René Rast, spared his tires . Rast had to make a second pit stop while Rockenfeller ended the race with one stop. At the season finale in Hockenheim , Rockenfeller clinched his seventh pole of his career in qualifying on Sunday. Due to a penalty, however, he started the race in 6th place. He finished the race in second place. With seven places in the top three including one win, he finished the season in fourth place overall.
Personal
Rockenfeller has lived in Altnau on Lake Constance since 2007 . He graduated from school with a secondary school leaving certificate . In his parents 'car workshop and on his grandparents' farm, he came into contact with various vehicles at a young age. He completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic in the company and continued to work in the company at the beginning of his motorsport career. Rockenfeller is married and has two sons.
