2018 season>

The 2017 DTM season was the 31st season of the DTM and the 18th since the series was re-established in 2000. The season began on May 5th in Hockenheim and ended on October 15th at the same location.

Sporting and technical changes

Manufacturer

In August 2016 it was announced that in the course of cost savings for the 2017 season, all three manufacturers should reduce their line-up from eight to six vehicles. This was confirmed at the end of October.

Teams

In the course of trying to reduce traffic parted Mercedes of Mücke Motorsport and ART Grand Prix , every six vehicles of the future HWA AG looked after. At Audi , the Abt Sportsline team will only look after two vehicles instead of the previous four. At BMW , the MTEK team , which will be included in BMW's program in the endurance world championship from the 2018 season , withdrew from the DTM.

On December 6, 2016, BMW announced that in addition to Team MTEK, Schnitzer Motorsport would also be leaving the DTM and that Team RBM and Team RMG would each provide three vehicles from the 2017 season.

Regulations

The performance of the engines has been increased by enlarging the air flow limiter from 28 mm to 29 mm, and further developments are permitted in defined areas of the intake system.

In order to reduce the pressure of the vehicles, various changes to the aerodynamics were decided. In addition to increased ground clearance, the regulations in the area of the front spoiler, underbody and diffuser have changed . In addition, when using the drag reduction system, the entire rear wing no longer folds down, but only the upper rear wing element.

In addition to the tires, the rims are now the same for all vehicles, ATS has been announced as the supplier. The use of electric blankets to preheat the tires is now prohibited.

The originally 40-minute race on Saturday was extended to 55 minutes, and the race on Sunday was shortened from 60 to 55 minutes. There is also a mandatory pit stop on Saturday. During the pit stop, a maximum of eight mechanics are allowed to work on the vehicle instead of 15, and only one impact wrench is allowed on each side of the vehicle.

The point system has also been changed. The best three drivers in qualifying will now also receive points. The first receives three points, the second two points and the third one point.

Teams and drivers

All teams use Hankook tires .

  1. Marco Wittmann achieved the fastest lap in qualifying and received 3 points for pole position. However, due to a penalty transfer by five places due to three warnings, he started from sixth place and René Rast started from first place on the grid.
  2. Marco Wittmann was the first to cross the finish line in the race. However, he was subsequently disqualified because the required amount of residual gasoline was no longer in the tank during the follow-up inspection of his vehicle. Thus, it was Mike Rockenfeller appointed the new winner.
