Martin Georg Tomczyk (born December 7, 1981 in Rosenheim ) is a German automobile racing driver . He is the son of the motorsport official Hermann Tomczyk . He competed in the DTM from 2001 to 2016 , in which he won the drivers' championship with Team Phoenix in 2011 .
Career
Beginnings in motorsport
Tomczyk began his career like most motor sportsmen in karting , in which he was active from 1992 to 1997. In 1998 he moved into the single-seater racing and was immediately behind André Lotterer runner-up of the German Formula BMW Junior. In 1999 Tomczyk switched to the German Formula BMW and became Lotterer's team- mate in the BMW Rookie Team . While Lotterer won the championship, Tomczyk finished the season in fourth place. In addition, Tomczyk competed in the Portuguese Formula BMW and won the championship. In 2000 Tomczyk competed in the German Formula 3 championship for Opel Team KMS . He finished the season in twelfth place while his team-mate Giorgio Pantano became champions.
DTM
2001 Tomczyk joined the DTM into the junior team of Abt Sportsline . Starting in an Abt-Audi TT-R , at the age of 19 he became the youngest DTM driver to date. With a fourth place, which he achieved in his second race at the Nürburgring , the best result, he ended his first DTM season in 13th place overall. In 2002 Tomczyk improved to eleventh place in the championship. His best result, a fifth place, he achieved again at the Nürburgring. In 2003 Tomczyk received a so-called “car of the year” from Abt-Audi and finished 16th in the drivers' standings with one point.
When Audi entered the factory in 2004 , Tomczyk again received a current vehicle model, the Audi A4 DTM , which was used by Abt Sportsline. At the second race at Estoril he achieved his first DTM podium with a third place. Although he was denied a win this year, three second places followed in the further course of the season. As the third-best Audi driver, he finished the season in fifth place in the championship. Tomczyk was the best German DTM driver this season. In 2005 Tomczyk was unable to match the results from the previous year. He finished the season in 13th championship place and was the worst driver who drove a current Audi A4 DTM.
In 2006 Tomczyk managed to score points in nine out of ten races. After two third places, the eighth race of the season at the Circuit de Catalunya saw his first victory in the DTM. Tomczyk, who only had to admit defeat to Tom Kristensen within the brand , finished fourth in the championship at the end of the season. In 2007 he won the races at the Nürburgring and in Zandvoort . Tomczyk was the Audi driver with the most victories this season, but his team-mate Mattias Ekström won the DTM title . Tomczyk finished the season in third place.
In 2008 Tomczyk failed to match the performance of the previous two seasons. His best result was a second place in Oschersleben and he finished the season in seventh place overall. The 2009 season began for Tomczyk with three races without points. In the further course of the season, however, he finished on the podium four times. He scored his fourth DTM victory at the Nürburgring. As the third-best Audi driver, he finished sixth in the championship. In 2010 Tomczyk contested his tenth DTM season for Abt Sportsline. Tomczyk came into the points in eight of eleven races, but did not manage to place on the podium. At the race in Oschersleben, Tomczyk took part in a DTM race for the 100th time. One race later he made his 100th start in the DTM race in Hockenheim . In the championship, he finished the season in eighth place.
After ten years at Abt Sportsline, Tomczyk left the racing team for the 2011 season and was replaced by Mike Rockenfeller . Tomczyk switched to Phoenix within the Audi teams , which, unlike Abt Sportsline, use the Audi A4 DTM model, which is one year older. In the second race of the season in Zandvoort, Tomczyk achieved his first podium finish in third place in the new team. He had a chance of second place in the final stages of the race. One race later in Spielberg Tomczyk first achieved pole position and then victory. It was the first win for the Phoenix team since 2000 and the first win for an Audi “year-old car”. One race later, at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz , he achieved his second win of the season. It was the first Audi victory on this track in six years. With the win, Tomczyk became the first “year-old driver” to take the lead in the championship. One race later, at the Norisring , Tomczyk started from tenth place on the grid, but worked his way up to third place. This made him the best Audi driver again. Two races later, he won another race at Brands Hatch and again took the lead in the drivers' championship. With a second place in the subsequent race in Oschersleben, he extended his lead further. Third place in Valencia was enough to win the title early. Tomczyk thus became the first racing driver to become DTM champion in a “year-old car”. At the end of the season he was 72 to 52 points ahead of his brand colleague Ekström. Tomczyk finished in one of the top five places in every DTM race of the 2011 season.
After winning the title, Tomczyk switched to BMW as a works driver for the 2012 season . He drove a BMW M3 DTM of Reinhold Motorsport . At the Norisring he lost the lead on the last lap and missed his first win for BMW. At the end of the season he finished eighth overall with two second places as the best results. In 2013 Tomczyk stayed with Reinhold Motorsport in the DTM. At the end of the season he finished 19th overall.
In 2014 Tomczyk switched to Schnitzer Motorsport within the BMW DTM teams . He finished third and improved to sixth place in the drivers' standings. He was the second best BMW driver behind the champion Marco Wittmann . In 2015 Tomczyk stayed with Schnitzer in the DTM. He chose the starting number 77. At the end of the season he finished in 19th place overall with fourth place as the best result. Within BMW, he was beaten by all brand colleagues this year. In 2016 Tomczyk competed once in the DTM with starting number 100 for Schnitzer. A fifth place was his best result and he was beaten again by all other BMW drivers. He finished the season in 21st place in the drivers' championship. At the end of the season, Tomczyk ended his involvement in the DTM after 16 years.
