The Abt Audi TT-R is a prototype racing car , more precisely a silhouette vehicle, from the German automobile manufacturer Audi , which was designed for exclusive use in the DTM . The TT-R was manufactured in four development stages and privately developed by Abt Sportsline for the new edition of the DTM between 2000 and 2003. The TT-R competed against the Opel Astra V8 Coupé and the AMG-Mercedes CLK-DTM . It also took part in two 24-hour races at the Nürburgring .
background
Christian Abt was the last Super Touring Car Cup champion in 1999 in an Audi A4 Quattro (B5). After the Abt Sportsline team had already taken over Audi's works assignment in the STW in 1999 after its withdrawal in favor of the upcoming Le Mans project, the company decided to start in the revived DTM . Team boss Hans-Jürgen Abt did not get permission to take part in the DTM races until January 31, 2000 from the organizer ITR .
development
In 100 days, from February 2000, Abt-Sportsline developed the TT-R and had the four emergency vehicles built for the DTM season 2000 by the British company Foss-Tech . The V8 engine is based on a series engine that was used in the Audi A8 D2 and adapted for the DTM. Because at the beginning of the development of the TT-R, future competitors Mercedes-Benz and Opel had their emergency vehicles driven for extensive tests on the racetrack. The DTM presentation took place on May 11, 2000 in Berlin. The deficit in the first season was large and the TT-R were mostly behind the field , driven by Christian Abt , James Thompson , Kris Nissen and Laurent Aïello .
In the 2003 DTM season , a total of six Abt-Audi TT-R were used.
successor
For the 2004 DTM season , the successor was presented with the Audi A4 DTM . From this season Audi started again as a plant in the DTM in close cooperation with Abt Sportsline and developed the new A4 DTM together with Abt and competed against the DTM AMG Mercedes C-Class and in the first two years also against the Opel Vectra GTS V8 on.
Continued use
After being used in the DTM, the vehicles were used in long-distance races and hill climbs.
