The Audi A1 (internal type designation 8X) is a small car made by the automobile manufacturer Audi . The vehicle was produced between 2010 and 2018. A facelift took place on the A1 in 2015.
History and technology
The Audi 50 was available from August 1974 to July 1978 . It was also sold as the VW Polo from March 1975 and is considered the ancestor of the A1. Between November 1999 and July 2005, Audi manufactured the independently developed but slightly smaller Audi A2 . After production of the vehicle was discontinued, the A1 came onto the market as the successor model after five years.
The A1 was formally presented to the public on March 4, 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show . The automobile is technically based on the 2008 with the Seat Ibiza (Typ 6J) introduced PQ25 / A05 platform, which also for the VW Polo V is used. The first deliveries took place in September 2010.
Production of the series was stopped at the beginning of May 2018 after approx. 909,000 vehicles. The second generation was finally presented in mid-June 2018 and was introduced in autumn 2018. Production is relocated from Brussels to Martorell .
Shaping
A three-door design study was presented under the name Audi Metroproject quattro at the Tokyo Motor Show 2007, until its presentation in Europe it was retrospectively renamed Audi A1 project quattro. In October 2008 at the Mondial de l'Automobile , a five-door concept vehicle called the Audi A1 Sportback Concept was shown and resembled the shape of the Audi A3 .
The approximately 25 cm shorter vehicle is also equipped with the Audi single-frame radiator grille as a design feature. With the A1 this was cut at the upper corners. The sheet metal edge that Audi calls the “tornado line” goes around the car. In conjunction with xenon lights , the headlights take on the LED daytime running lights familiar from other Audi models. As with the Audi Q5, the taillights are completely integrated into the tailgate and, in conjunction with the xenon headlights, also use LED technology. The xenon headlights and LED rear lights were only available as special equipment (various light packages) from the market launch in Germany.
Body styles
At the beginning, the A1 was only offered as a three-door hatchback. On February 11, 2012, the five-door version Sportback followed , which was available to order from mid-November 2011 and was officially presented at the Tokyo Motor Show . The A1 Sportback has become a bit wider, the C-pillar has been pushed back slightly in favor of headroom in the rear, the vehicle length remains unchanged.
The trunk has a capacity of 270 liters and can be enlarged by folding down the rear seat back.
Facelift
In January 2015 the series was subjected to a facelift. All available engines meet the Euro 6 emissions standard, with the two 1.0-TFSI-ultra and 1.4-TDI-ultra three-cylinder engines being used in the A1 for the first time. The double-charged 1.4 TFSI (136 kW) will be replaced by the 1.8 TFSI (141 kW). Furthermore, a new electromechanical power steering is now used. The previous equipment lines will be replaced by new ones: A1, A1 design and A1 sport.
Furnishing
Equipment lines

- A1 sport : The sporty equipment line also includes 16-inch aluminum wheels, sports seats, sports suspension and Audi drive select (from 85 kW).
- A1 design : The more upscale line also includes 16-inch aluminum wheels, sports seats and an aluminum look in the interior.
Optional extras
In addition to the equipment lines, numerous additional equipment are possible. Among other things, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, parking sensors for front and rear, a high beam assistant and an automatically dimming interior mirror. There are also various multimedia additions such as an MMI - infotainment - and navigation system with 6.5-inch TFT color screen or a Bose surround sound system with 465 watts of output power.
safety
In the Euro NCAP crash test in November 2010, the Audi A1 received 90% of the points for occupant protection, 79% for child protection and 49% for pedestrian protection. At the JNCNAP in 2011, it received an overall rating of four stars.
Model variants
Audi A1 quattro
In autumn 2012, Audi offered the special A1 quattro model, limited to 333 units . About a third of the special series was ordered from Switzerland
The vehicle, designed as the sporty top model of the series, has a two-liter gasoline engine with a turbocharger that has a maximum output of 188 kW (256 hp).
The standard equipment included all-wheel drive, xenon light, sports seats covered with nappa leather, 18-inch white painted wheels and an infotainment center with navigation system and WLAN option.
The model was only available as a three-door and only in black and white paintwork. The new price was € 49,900 in Germany.
Audi A1 e-tron
An electric drive called the Audi A1 e-tron with a range of 50 kilometers should also have been available from 2012 , but any market launch has been postponed indefinitely.
The output of the electric motor is 75 kW (102 PS) and its maximum torque is 240 Nm. In continuous operation, the output is reduced to 45 kW (61 hp). The vehicle should accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 130 km / h.
The power is transmitted by a single-stage gearbox. The lithium-ion battery positioned in front of the rear axle can be supported by a 15 kW rotary engine under the trunk while driving . This range extender increases the range by a further 200 kilometers. The battery can be fully recharged in three hours via a plug-in connection to a 400-volt network. The fuel consumption would be two liters of super per 100 kilometers.
Audi S1
The Audi S1 is - apart from the limited special model A1 quattro - the most powerful A1 model variant. The vehicle, which will be available from summer 2014, is based on the facelift that was released in 2015 and is available as a three-door and Sportback. The S1 is equipped as standard with the 2-liter TFSI engine with 170 kW (231 hp) maximum power and quattro all-wheel drive . It stands out from the other A1 models with a four-pipe flap exhaust system and modified front and rear bumpers.
Technical specifications
The chassis of the PQ25 platform consists of MacPherson struts and wishbones at the front and - with the exception of the Quattro - a torsion beam axle at the rear, together with a rack and pinion steering with electrical power assistance and hydraulically operated disc brakes on all wheels. The brake includes a brake booster and an anti-lock braking system .
All models of the A1 with the exception of the 1.4 TFSI 136 kW (185 PS) and the 1.6 TDI S tronic 66 kW (90 PS) are equipped with start-stop and recuperation systems as standard , with which consumption can be reduced.
A turbocharged 1.4-liter TFSI engine with a maximum output of 103 kW (140 hp) and cylinder deactivation is also available for the A1 and A1 Sportback . From the end of April 2012, the 2.0 TDI engine with a maximum output of 105 kW (143 hp), which was already available in the two-door model from August 2011, could also be ordered from the Sportback.

Sales and new registrations
Series production of 500 vehicles per day was planned for the plant in Brussels from autumn 2009 .
Audi initially expected sales of 50,000 vehicles in 2010 and produced that many. Of these, 28,000 were registered, 40% of which in Germany were dealerships or Audi itself. BMW sold 42,000 copies of the Mini in the same period. By September 2010, a good 2,000 vehicles had been sold in Germany. In the financial report for the first half of 2011, Audi stated that it had sold 63,518 A1s (out of a total of 660,446 Audi, 140,699 of which were in China including Hong Kong). The “Interim Report for the 3rd Quarter 2011” reports 88,784 deliveries to customers in the first nine months of 2011 (previous year: 7,411).
For 2011, Audi was aiming for worldwide sales of 120,000 units and was also planning to launch the A1 in China. The China version of the A1 has not been allowed to be produced since January 1, 2018 due to excessive fuel consumption.
In the first half of 2012, sales stagnated at 64,413 units despite the development of new markets and the introduction of the five-door Sportback model variant, at the level of the same period in the previous year with 63,106 vehicles delivered.
According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority , 169,885 A1 / S1s were newly registered in Germany between 2010 and 2016.
