The VW EA288 (EA = development order) or modular diesel construction kit ( MDB ) is a diesel engine series from Volkswagen AG with three and four cylinders. The engine generation with common rail injection has been used in various vehicle types of the Volkswagen Group since 2012 and is the successor to the VW EA189 series .

construction

The engines are designed as in- line engines . The engine block of the three-cylinder is made of the aluminum alloy AlSi 9 Cu 3 , while the engine block of the four-cylinder is made of cast iron (GJL-250). The variant with 2.0 liter engine capacity there to compensate for free inertial forces of the second order with balance shafts .

Like their predecessors, the engines are designed with four valves per cylinder. The two overhead camshafts ( DOHC valve timing ) are driven by a toothed belt that is designed for the service life of the engine.

The engine is water- cooled . It is divided into several circuits in order to accelerate the warm-up. In the so-called microcircuit driven by an electric coolant pump , the coolant flows through the cylinder head , the exhaust gas recirculation cooler (EGR) and the heating system heat exchanger. The mechanical coolant pump is only activated when the cooling requirement increases and the coolant also flows through the engine block. When the operating temperature is reached, the thermostat opens and the coolant flows through the water cooler, where it is cooled. There is also an independent low-temperature circuit for indirect charge air cooling , which is also operated by an electric pump.

All engines have an oxidation catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter . In the case of engine versions with the Euro 6 emissions standard , either a NOx storage catalytic converter or an SCR system is used , depending on the vehicle model .

VW exhaust scandal

In the course of the revelations surrounding the VW emissions scandal , a VW manager and a person familiar with the US investigation told Reuters that a total of four engine types were affected by the software manipulation, including the EA288 series.

After Volkswagen AG had denied on October 15, 2015 that engines other than the EA189 series had been manipulated, a company spokesman admitted on October 22, 2015 that the EA288 series was also affected in the USA. As early as September 18, 2015, the California Air Resources Board also listed the 2015 model year of the EA288 series (referred to there as Gen3) in its letter to VW, which was equipped with a manipulated control software with a shut-off device. The engines according to the Euro 5 (until September 1, 2015) and Euro 6 version should not contain any inadmissible defeat devices.

In March 2019, during a procedure at the Wuppertal district court, it became known that a standard disconnection device in the form of so-called thermal windows was also set up in the EA 288 series. At the beginning of December 2019, the Braunschweig public prosecutor searched the premises of Volkswagen AG. A system then detects whether there is a drop in performance, but an alarm is not triggered immediately.

According to a previously unpublished judgment by the Duisburg Regional Court , which became known in January 2020, Volkswagen AG clearly admitted in 2018 during a main hearing there that a defeat device was installed in the VW Golf VII with EA288. According to the judgment, VW admitted that it is recognized whether the vehicle is on a test bench ("cycle recognition"). The judges ruled that this was the only way to comply with the limit values of the EU6 standard. Volkswagen AG therefore acted “deliberately” and “immorally” and had to reimburse the individual plaintiff for the original purchase price. On February 6, 2020, the Regensburg Regional Court also ruled the sale of a car with an EA288 engine as deliberately immoral damage.
