The Audi A8 D2 (internal type designation 4D) is an upper-class vehicle from Audi , which was manufactured from mid-1994 to mid-2002 or sold at the end of 2002 and represents the successor model of the Audi V8 .
Model history
Audi's journey into the luxury class began in 1979 with the Audi 200 (Type 43), which was based on the Audi 100 C2 . The luxury version of the new Audi 100 C3 was followed in 1983 by the Audi 200 of the type 44. In 1988, the Audi V8, the first independent luxury- class model, came onto the market. This, too, was - despite its technically independent new design - an offshoot of the Audi 100. This was associated with design restrictions; Among other things, space and comfort could not yet compete with those of the competitors in the upper class. With the quattro all-wheel drive in particular , these models achieved considerable success, but they have not yet experienced broad acceptance as a competitive offer for Mercedes-Benz or BMW products.
In the fall of 1991, Audi presented two prototypes with tubular space frames and bodies made of aluminum : the Audi quattro spyder and the Avus quattro . They were presented at the IAA and the Tokyo Motor Show .
In September 1993 the so-called Audi Space Frame Concept Car - ASF for short - was presented at the IAA. It had a 3.4-liter V8 TDI engine and - apart from the polished aluminum outer skin - largely corresponded to the Audi A8 that came onto the market in May 1994.
Since then, Audi has offered a technically independent full-size model series. The first version of the A8 was equipped with a number of technical features that the main competitors Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7- series did not yet offer.
This again included the “ quattro ” all-wheel drive and the world's first aluminum body in a high-end series vehicle. The car still had to accept criticism in the comfort section - a tribute to the rather sporty overall design.
Of the first generation Audi A8, 105,092 units were produced until production was discontinued on July 30, 2002.
After eight years of construction, the original A8 , known internally as the D2 , was replaced by the D3 in November 2002 (model year 2003) .
Construction times
- 1994 to 1999: Audi A8 type D2 / 4D
- 1999 to 2001: Audi A8 type D2 / 4D (first facelift : modified front, aluminum strips front / rear, right side mirror the same size, modified center console, modified door handles and white side indicators)
- 2001 to 2002: Audi A8 type D2 / 4D (second facelift: slightly modified fog lights, aluminum strip on the ashtray and small compartment in the center console as well as an automatic gearbox with gear stage "S" instead of 2/3/4)
drive
A 2.8-liter gasoline engine with six cylinders in V design was used as the basic engine . The largest engine in the engine range offered was the twelve-cylinder W engine (W12). There was also an eight-cylinder V-type gasoline engine with a displacement of 4.2 liters, from which the sportier-looking S8 also came. The first A8 with a diesel engine (2.5 TDI ) initially had a maximum output of 110 kW (150 PS) and was replaced from model year 2000 by a version with a maximum output of 132 kW (180 PS). In the same year the first eight-cylinder diesel engine (3.3 TDI) was presented.
While the previous Audi V8 model was delivered exclusively with quattro all-wheel drive , customers of the Audi A8 can choose between front- wheel and all-wheel drive for the smaller gasoline engine variants . Front-wheel drive is unusual in this class; luxury-class models are usually equipped with rear-wheel drive . The all-wheel drive advertised by Audi was also an innovation in the luxury class when it was launched.
Up to the year of construction 1996 only a 4-speed automatic transmission was installed in connection with a 4.2 liter engine (all with all-wheel drive) - from year of construction 1997 a 5-speed automatic transmission. A manual gearbox was optionally available for the smaller engines . For the 4.2-liter engine, it was later possible to choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic transmission in the S8.
body
The body of the Audi A8 is made almost entirely of aluminum . This is to avoid rust problems , although aluminum can also corrode under certain circumstances . The self-supporting aluminum body bears the name Audi Space Frame . Even the predecessor model of the first Audi A8 had a fully galvanized body in which rust damage was extremely rare, usually only after improperly repaired accident damage.
Another development goal was and is the reduction of vehicle weight and the associated consumption. This was only partially successful because the vehicle was to be equipped with all technically possible equipment details. This included the Quattro drive, which increased the weight by around 100 kg. Nevertheless, the Audi A8 was lighter than the comparable BMW 7 Series or the Mercedes S-Class.
The Audi A8 D2 was only offered as a sedan with a notchback . A combination version was not in the delivery program.
At the 1997 Geneva Motor Show , a concept vehicle of a coupé version based on the A8 D2 that was built by IVM Automotive was shown.
In September 2001, Audi presented the Audi Avantissimo study at the IAA at a time when the Audi A8 D2 was being sold . Even if the audience's reactions were mostly positive, the production of such a station wagon is not planned by Audi in the near future.
As with the Audi V8, there was an optionally selectable, extended body variant: the Audi A8 long version.
The A8 in public and in the media
At the end of the 1990s, Audi relied heavily on media-effective appearances. The Audi S8 at the time was used as an escape vehicle in the film Ronin (1998). An Audi A8 or S8 was also used in the film Matrix Reloaded .
Gerhard Schröder used the Audi A8 as a state body for the first time , and Angela Merkel also uses an A8. Until then, the vehicles of high-ranking politicians mostly came from Mercedes-Benz or, more rarely, from BMW.

Existence in Germany
The inventory of Audi A8 D2s is listed according to manufacturer (HSN) and type code numbers (TSN) in Germany according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Types with less than 100 vehicles are not shown. Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.
