Audi quattro spyder is the name of a sports car study by Audi AG . It was originally intended to be built as a series vehicle, but only a prototype was produced. The name refers to the Audi quattro sports coupé series .

history

The quattro spyder was presented to the general public at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1991. It was a sports coupe with aluminum body , a transversely-mounted V6 - mid-engine with 128 kW and permanent four-wheel drive . Massive 205/55 / ZR 18 tires on 7J x 18 aluminum wheels were planned as wheels for the time. The planned purchase price for the later production vehicle was around DM 100,000, and there were already enough reservations from potential buyers. At the “last second” after advertising material in the form of brochures, information films and miniatures had already been produced, the project was stopped and canceled without replacement due to the likely high production costs.

All in all, only one originally orange prototype was built, which was repainted in dark green ( gomera metallic ) for photos . Then it was painted back to fidji orange. However, due to these press photos, the belief that there are several vehicles persists to this day. The prototype will be exhibited in Audi's museum mobile in Ingolstadt .

Further developments

Although the quattro spyder was never built in series, certain elements of the concept were used in future Audi vehicles. In 1994, Audi launched the A8, the first production vehicle with an aluminum body. The V6 engine built into the quattro spyder was almost unchanged, but as a longitudinally installed front engine , was used in the then new Audi 100 C4 and Audi 80 B4 series as well as in the convertible and coupé , each under the model designation 2.8E and the engine code AAH . It was used in the convertible until 2000.

The idea of a compact (sports) coupé in the style of the quattro spyder was initially rejected at Audi. Only the Audi Coupé was built until 1996 - after slight adjustments to the then current look of the B4 and the introduction of more powerful engine variants. In 1995 the Audi TT was presented as a four-cylinder front-engine coupé at the IAA and went into series production with slight modifications from 1998.

In the meantime, Audi has again developed a mid-engine sports coupé with the Audi R8 , which has been available since 2007.
