The Audi Coupé (Type 89) is a sports coupé based on the Audi 80 B3 (also Type 89), which was manufactured from autumn 1988 to the end of 1996. The coupé is often incorrectly referred to as the "Audi 80 Coupé" or B3 or B4 Coupé.

Model history

General

Rear view

The second series of the Audi Coupé is based on the Audi 80 B3 (Type 89) presented in August 1986, but in contrast to the first series was a completely independent development with optical parallels to the Audi 80. The hatchback used here also has a large one in the roof hinged tailgate and folding rear seat backrests, the loading sill is above the rear lights, the modified bumpers are painted in the same color as the car. The first Audi convertible was later created on the basis of these design features, which ensure high body rigidity in the Audi Coupé .

Facelift

In July 1991 the coupe was given a facelift. The front of the vehicle, which corresponded to the Audi 80 B3, was changed to the front of the Audi 80 B4, which was introduced in autumn 1991 . At the same time, the range of engines was changed. The five-cylinder engine with 20 valves was omitted. The 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine introduced in the Audi 100 C4 in 1990 was used for this.

In July 1994, the 2.3-liter five-cylinder was discontinued and was replaced by the 2.6-liter six-cylinder introduced in August 1992. Only the 5-cylinder 20V turbo in the S2 remained until the end of production. In order to make the change more palatable, the six-cylinder engines had a little extra power compared to the 5-cylinder variants.

overview

  • 09.1990: Introduction of the S2 , already with the look of the later Audi 80 B4 series (radiator grille integrated in the bonnet, etc.).
  • 07.1991: Facelift for Coupé. The look is taken from the S2, but without its bumper, which was only introduced in the 1993 model year.
  • 09.1991: Introduction of the 2.8-liter V6 engine.
  • 08/1992: Introduction of the 2.6-liter V6 engine.
  • 12.1996: Production of the Audi Coupé is discontinued.
