The Audi Avant RS2 is a so-called sports station wagon and was a cooperation between Audi and Porsche based on the Audi 80 Avant of the type B4 / 8C. When it appeared in 1994, it was the most powerful and fastest production Audi ever built, and until the Audi S6 Plus appeared in April 1996, it was the most powerful vehicle in the Audi model range. In the factory, the Avant RS2 was listed and named as P1 (P for Porsche).

Combined Audi and Porsche logo on the rear

The Porsche logo is also present on the emblem / logo and indicates the collaboration between the two automobile manufacturers.

The fascination of the Avant RS2 resulted from the fact that it combined the performance and handling of a sports car with a station wagon body that remained quite subtle despite various modifications. The name “Porsche” and the limited edition also ensured the desired prestige.

The Audi-Porsche RS2 , as the model is also called, historically founded the “sports station wagon” category in automobile construction, which to this day is what makes Audi a great success as a brand and the popularity of the manufacturer's sporty station wagon models. The RS2 traditionally has quattro permanent all-wheel drive .

The car was actually only planned and available as an Avant (the Audi name for station wagon models), but four RS2 sedans were confirmed by Audi . One is in the Audi Museum and two drive in the United Arab Emirates. However, these differ from the model exhibited in the Audi Museum. No information is available on the fourth.

Production of the Avant RS2 began in 1994. A total of 2,200 units were planned. The official market launch took place in Germany on March 19, 1994. The price at that time was 98,900 marks, a total of 2,891 copies were produced.

development

The development basis was the Audi S2 in the Avant version. Porsche had developed the specific RS2 scopes and tuned the RS2 as a whole. With the Avant RS2, Audi and Porsche have jointly created a new vehicle category: the compact "high-performance station wagon". The appeal of the Avant RS2 was and still is in the combination of driving performance that was previously only available in a sports car and the practical station wagon body, which enables a wide range of uses.

The enhanced 2.2-liter 20-valve engine from Audi is completed with a modified turbocharger and an enlarged intercooler, and the exhaust system is adapted to the engine output. The sports chassis with permanent all-wheel drive from Audi is fitted with 17-inch light alloy wheels from Porsche and their high-performance braking system, which can be recognized from the outside by the red brake calipers with the Porsche logo.

The Avant RS2 demonstrated the possibilities of how a high level of driving performance and driving culture can be achieved by combining technology from two automobile manufacturers. Walter Röhrl , the two-time rally world champion , summarized the following about the Avant RS2:

“I see one of the greatest advantages of this model today is that it looks more like a normal family car, but offers the performance of a thoroughbred sports car. The RS2 is a real sports car alternative with plenty of space for people and luggage. Engine power, driving behavior, brakes - it's a homogeneous whole, everything fits together. "

body

The body is largely identical to that of the Audi 80 Avant , but the cooperation with Porsche has brought a few changes with it. Thus, the entire exterior design is based on the Porsche 911-series 964 / 993 has been modified. The exterior mirrors (Porsche 964/993), indicator units (993) and rims (964) are original Porsche parts of this series, and the RS2 has modified front and rear bumpers. At the front, the air inlets in the bumper are divided into three parts in the style of the Porsche 993 Carrera 4S / Turbo in order to also cool the intercooler and the front wheel brakes. In contrast to the series Avant, the rear number plate is offset downwards in the rear bumper, but there is a cover in the tailgate that gives the taillights the appearance of a band. This is also a design quote from the 964/993 series. In addition, the Avant RS2 can be recognized by the RS2 emblems with small Porsche logos in the black-painted bonnet grill and on the tailgate. The red-painted brake calipers of the Porsche braking system have white Porsche lettering.

inner space

The sporty appearance of the Avant RS2 has also been implemented in the passenger compartment. The interior design is characterized by two colors, each coordinated with the eleven exterior paintwork: the intensely colored RS blue and a more neutral silver gray. This design is reserved exclusively for the Avant RS2.

The center panels of the seats are covered with Alcantara in the same colors RS blue or silver gray, as are the door panels. The color of the seat and backrest bolsters in black silk nappa leather contrasts with this. As an option, the seat covers were also available completely in black silk nappa. The height and backrest adjustment of the Recaro sports seats is electric.

The RS2 emblem with the Porsche lettering also adorns the Audi sports steering wheel. The steering wheel spokes are covered with Alcantara in the respective interior color, optionally with black leather. The sports steering wheel is supplied in combination with the Procon-ten safety system. Alternatively and at no extra cost, a steering wheel with a driver's airbag was also available.

All dials of the analog instruments are white, the four main instruments are framed with black decorative rings. The panels with carbon fiber inserts on the dashboard and door panels also underline the sporty look in the interior. In addition to other extras, the standard equipment also includes front and rear electric windows, headlight cleaning system and of course the fully galvanized body.

Among other things, the following options were available as special equipment at an additional cost: automatically controlled air conditioning, passenger airbag and the electric sliding / tilting roof, as well as the cruise control system and the net partition to the luggage compartment.

engine

The Audi Avant RS2 has an in -line five-cylinder turbo engine ( engine code ADU) with a displacement of 2226 cm³, which is known from the Audi S2 (MKB: ABY). The output (169 kW / 230 PS) of the S2 engine has been increased to 232 kW (315 PS) at 6500 rpm. The torque could also be increased to 410  Nm at 3000 rpm. The engine is a 5-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine, arranged lengthways at the front, with a sixfold crankshaft, light alloy cylinder head, electronic injection system, electronic boost pressure control and four valves per cylinder with two overhead camshafts ( DOHC ), which are driven via toothed belts and chains .

The higher engine performance of the Avant RS2 was achieved, among other things, through modifications to the intake tract, intake manifold injection , engine management and exhaust system as well as through the use of a modified, larger turbocharger and an also enlarged intercooler . In addition, fine adjustments were made to the engine management and valve timing. The turbo engine with a compression of 9.0: 1 is designed for Super Plus (98 RON ). Thanks to cylinder- selective knock control with two sensors, normal Euro-Super (95 RON) can also be used with a slight reduction in performance.

landing gear

The chassis has also been adapted for the Avant RS2: cast wishbones are used instead of sheet metal control arms, and a 4-piston high-performance brake system from Porsche was installed, which can be recognized by the red brake calipers and the Porsche logo. After a short production time, this was increased from the initial 304 mm disc diameter to the 322 mm of the Porsche 993 Turbo.

In keeping with the sporty character of the car, the ABS of the brakes is set in such a way that it only comes into operation very close to the blocking limit when the pedal is pressed hard . Compared to the Audi S2 , the body was lowered and the identification of the shock absorbers was modified. Instead of the 205/55 16 inch tires of the S2, wider and larger 17 inch models with 245/40 inch tires are used. They are mounted on light alloy wheels in Porsche design. As a result, the response to steering wheel movements, directional stability, even at top speed, were improved and the maximum possible lateral acceleration was increased. The turning behavior of the Avant RS2 can usually be described as neutral to slightly understeering.

drive

The standard permanent quattro all-wheel drive with self-locking Torsen intermediate differential ensures the best possible traction. A rear axle differential lock can also be activated manually as a starting aid in difficult road conditions. The lock is automatically released at a driving speed of 25 km / h or more. Power is transmitted via the standard six-speed gearbox. A rack and pinion steering with power assistance ensures steering reactions and directional stability.
