successor Audi RS6

The S6 Plus is the first independent vehicle from Quattro GmbH , which, as a subsidiary of Audi AG, made modifications to Audi vehicles and also makes modifications to current models. The S6 Plus is largely based on the Audi S6 4.2 model .

history

With this vehicle, Quattro GmbH began producing vehicles for the first time as a direct subsidiary of Audi and later took over the production of the "RS" and "R" series such as RS4 ; RS6 up to the R8 . Internally, it was managed and designated as Q1 (Q for quattro GmbH). It traditionally has quattro permanent all-wheel drive . It could be ordered in April 1996 and it was delivered in June 1996. The price at that time was 116,300 marks for the sedan and 120,500 marks for the Avant. A total of 97 sedans and 855 avants were built. As of January 1, 2016, 20 sedans and 150 Avant were still registered in Germany.

design

Exterior

The S6 Plus can be visually distinguished from the normal S6 in a few details:

  • wider tire-rim combination (8x17J 6-spoke drop center 255 / 40ZR17) together with a 20 mm lower sports suspension.
  • All chrome parts are black anodized , such as window shaft and roof trims (including roof rails on the Avant) and the grille frame.
  • S6 Plus emblem in the radiator grille on the right and on the boot lid on the left.
  • 16-inch brake system (two-piston floating caliper) with front brake calipers painted black (323 mm).
  • A larger rear spoiler with an integrated third brake light was installed on the Avant.
  • The S6 Plus was offered in two exclusively reserved exterior colors (nogaro blue, pearl effect or misano red, pearl effect). Other colors were also possible as an option.

interior

The design of the interior largely corresponds to that of the Audi S6 . The differences are the sports seats with the cover combinations leather / Alcantara (Alcantara in nogaro blue, silver gray or anthracite) or natural leather in anthracite, the instrument cluster with a speedometer up to 300 km / h and dials in black, gray-white or blue and black rings around the instruments and an S6 Plus emblem as well as black anodized interior controls for the doors and handbrake levers in an exclusive design, a 3-spoke sports steering wheel with S6 Plus emblem and a headliner in anthracite.

Furnishing

The standard equipment in Germany corresponded to that of a normal Audi S6 from model year 1996 onwards. Essentially, it was full equipment; there were some country-specific differences. The complete Audi A6 / S6 equipment program was available for extras.

technology

engine

Engine compartment S6 Plus

The S6 Plus was built exclusively with a 4.2 liter V8 engine. The engine is based on that of the Audi S6; it was raised to an output of 240 kW (326 hp) and a torque of 400 Newton meters through engine tuning .

The compression ratio has been increased from 10.6 to 11.6: 1. This goes hand in hand with a larger valve lift for the inlet valves (11.6 instead of 10.1 mm), larger valve overlaps and the reduction in valve stem thickness to six millimeters. Further measures were weight-reduced valves and the return to the mechanical valve clearance compensation on the intake side, which was common in Audi engines until 1976, for higher speed stability. The hydraulic valve lifters were only retained on the exhaust side . There were also sharper opening times (crank angle 220 instead of 205 °), a variable intake manifold , the increase in the engine speed limit from 6,500 to 7,250 rpm and instead of an aluminum vibration damper on the crankshaft, a gray cast iron one. Since the number of hydraulic valve lifters had been halved, a smaller oil pump was sufficient compared to the 4.2-liter engine in the S6.

The other engine cover, the variable intake manifold and an additional oil cooler for the gearbox and engine are visually striking . The engine electronics have been adapted (higher speed and variable intake manifold). The four-valve engine of the S6 Plus anticipated many innovations in the upcoming five-valve V8. An indication of this are the many identical parts of the following S8 .

drive

The clutch is a single-plate dry clutch with a single-mass flywheel. The manual 6-speed gearbox has a lower gear ratio from third gear than the Audi S6. The maximum speed is limited to 250 km / h. The S6 Plus was offered as standard and exclusively with quattro all-wheel drive with self-locking Torsen center differential. It also has an electronic differential lock (EDL) as standard .

landing gear

The front axle consists of MacPherson struts with lower wishbones, wheel-guiding anti-roll bars and track stabilizers, as well as a maintenance-free rack-and-pinion steering with servo assistance. The rear axle is formed by four-bar trapezoidal links with struts, wishbones and stabilizers. The braking system is a diagonal dual circuit system with ABS / EBV and disc brakes at the front (internally ventilated) and at the rear.
