The Audi RS4 is the most powerful model of the Audi -Modellreihe A4 , which is built in the fourth generation.

The first RS4 appeared at the end of 1999 as the successor to the Audi RS2 and was produced until autumn 2001. In contrast to its predecessor, the RS2, it was produced by quattro GmbH , a subsidiary of Audi in Neckarsulm . This had a 2.7-liter bi-turbo V6 engine with 280 kW (380 hp).

The second generation, which appeared in summer 2005, was equipped with a 4.2-liter V8 high-speed engine with 309 kW (420 hp) without a turbocharger.

The third generation could be ordered from spring 2012 to mid-2015 and, like the second generation, has a high-revving V8 engine with a displacement of 4.2 liters and an output of 331 kW (450 hp).

The fourth generation, which will be delivered from 2018, was presented at the IAA in September 2017.

In September 1999, Audi presented the RS4 as the successor to the RS2 , which was developed from spring 1994 to summer 1995 in cooperation with Porsche .

In contrast to its predecessor, however, the RS4 was a product of the 100 percent Audi subsidiary quattro GmbH , which has been responsible for the Audi sports models since the late 1990s. Like its predecessor, the car was only available as an Avant ( station wagon ) and was based on the A4 of the B5 series . The vehicle, only available in Europe, was offered from the end of 1999 at a base price of around 127,000 DM.

Production of the first RS4 ended in September 2001 after 6030 copies. Initially, only half as many were planned, but demand was so high that Audi doubled production. The last vehicles were registered as vehicles of the model year 2002.

engine

For the RS version, the 2.7 l V6 engine of the S4 (B5) was modified by Cosworth , as Cosworth was part of the Volkswagen Group at the time . Among other things, enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers , revised cylinder heads , a new exhaust system and modified engine management were used. These modifications performed originally 195 kW (265 hp) and 400 Nm at 1850 rose min -1 of S4 (B5) to 280 kW (381 hp) and 440 Nm of torque , the constant 2500 to 6000 min -1 abut.

drive

Like its predecessor, the RS4 was only equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and permanent all-wheel drive ( quattro ). Despite the relatively high curb weight of 1620 kg, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.9 seconds.

The purchase prices began for the sedan at 71,700 euros and for the Avant at 73,350 euros, while the convertible was available from 85,050 euros (as of October 2007).

Production of the sedan and Avant ended in autumn 2008, while the last of the convertibles manufactured by Karmann in Rheine rolled off the production line in February 2009. A total of 14,368 vehicles were produced during the four-year construction period of the RS4 model. 7,657 of these are sedans (53%), 5,204 station wagons (36%) and 1,507 convertibles (11%).

Furnishing

Compared to the normal A4 models, the RS version differs through a slightly modified interior such as:

  • Speedometer instrument with changed scales and digital oil temperature display
  • Flattened steering wheel, partly in aluminum gloss
  • Pedal pads and footrest made of stainless steel
  • Bucket seats with embossed RS4 lettering
  • Engine start button in the center console

Externally you can also see changes, including:

  • widened wheelhouses
  • modified bumpers
  • Double-bar exterior mirrors in glossy aluminum
  • oval tailpipes

The Black style package included the car color phantom black , pearl effect, as well as bucket seats, the backs of which are painted in the car color, as well as the interior inlays. The decorative stitching on the leather interior is also gray and the grille frame is painted black. For the style package White (car color Ibis white, pearl effect ), these components are made in white.

The exterior mirrors and 19-inch wheels on both packages are shiny; the steering wheel rim, gear lever knob and handbrake handle are covered with suede. Optionally, the sports suspension plus (additional lowering by 10 mm) could be ordered at no extra charge , while the top speed was only electronically limited to 280 km / h.

engine

With the 4.2-l V8 engine, Audi embarked on the so-called "high-speed engine" for the first time in its RS models; the maximum speed is 8250 min −1 . Earlier RS models were always equipped with a turbocharger up to this point . Using a gasoline direct injection (FSI), a high compression ratio (12.5: 1 at super plus) and engine components, low friction of the eight-cylinder engine 309 kW (420 hp) at 7800 min -1 , and outputs a torque of 430 Nm at 5500 min -1 from (90% of which are from 2250 to 7600 min -1 available).

drive

In contrast to its predecessor, the all-wheel drive ( quattro ) of this RS4 works on a non-slip road surface with asymmetrical power distribution in a ratio of 40 (front axle) to 60 (rear axle). The RS4 was only available with a manually operated six-speed gearbox.

landing gear

Like the RS6 , this model also has a chassis with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), which reduces the rolling and pitching movements of the vehicle.

In addition to aluminum pedals and various RS4 logos in the interior, the standard interior equipment is upgraded with Alcantara / leather sports seats.

Engine and drive

The V8 high-revving engine with 4.2 liter displacement is based on the previous model B7, but has been revised and now delivers 331 kW (450 hp) at 8250 min -1 . The maximum torque of 430 Nm remained unchanged, however, is over the speed range of 4000 to 6000 min -1 are available. The same engine has been offered in the Audi RS5 coupé since 2010 .

In contrast to the previous models with 6-speed manual transmissions, the 7-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission is used as standard in the RS4 B8 . As with the Audi RS5, quattro permanent all-wheel drive with a crown gear differential is used as a center differential, instead of the previous Torsen differential . In addition to a delay-free distribution of the drive torque and a lighter design, the new differential allows a maximum of 70% of the drive torque to be directed to the front and 85% to the rear.
