successor Audi R8 4S

The Audi R8 (internal Type 42 ) is the first model generation of the mid-engine - sports car R8 of Audi , which was presented to the public in September of 2006. The name is based on the successful Le Mans - racing prototype Audi R8 . To save weight, the car body is made entirely of aluminum . From autumn 2006 to the end of 2014, a total of 26 037 R8 were produced, of which 5626 were newly registered in Germany, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . The successor Audi R8 4S appeared in 2015.

Model history

development

During the first test drives with pre-series vehicles on the Nürburgring and on the test track in Nardò , Italy , there were problems with the transmission ventilation , which resulted in at least three vehicles being completely burned out. In front of the factory gate in Ingolstadt , a test vehicle disguised as a Lamborghini Gallardo caught fire. However, this only affected the pre-series cars with the V10 engine, which was not yet available at the time . A fire also broke out in a prototype driving on a country road in the Schwäbisch Hall district. Despite overheating and tire problems, the planned production start date (V10: beginning of 2009) was not postponed under the then company boss Martin Winterkorn . According to Audi, all problems were fixed by the start of production.

marketing

The vehicle is based on the Le Mans quattro study , which was presented at the 2003 IAA .

The production model was formally shown for the first time at the Mondial de l'Automobile 2006 in September 2006. Sales of the R8, initially only available as a coupé, began in April 2007. In October 2010, the Spyder, an open version, was added to the range. In 2012, the model with the facelift was also presented at the Mondial de l'Automobile .

production

The model was initially produced by quattro GmbH at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm . From October 2014, the R8 was built in the newly built Audi Sport plant in neighboring Heilbronn , in the Böllinger Höfe industrial area, to relieve the main plant in Neckarsulm.

The R8 is produced in a factory- like production facility in which the "Silver Line" project was implemented for the first time. Here, the production process is being converted so that it takes account of demographic change and appeals to experienced employees who are at least 40 years old. Instead of just a few hand movements, the individual should carry out a lot more work steps. With a longer cycle time, the work steps become more diverse while the physical load is more even. In 2008, 120 employees produced 23 vehicles a day.

On July 17th, 2012, almost six years after the start of production, the 20th 000 th R8 from the assembly line. The anniversary model was a spherical blue R8  GT Spyder .

From autumn 2006 to the end of 2014, a total of 26 037 vehicles were produced, 6176 of which rolled off the assembly line as Spyder models (24%).

Vehicle characteristics

body

There are hardly any technical similarities between the eponymous Audi prototype , with which Audi became a five-time Le Mans winner , and the production vehicle. The Audi R8 is the first mid-engine sports car to be mass- produced by Audi for road traffic. With a 270 kg skeleton body made of aluminum ( Audi Space Frame ) and a frame made of aluminum and magnesium, in conjunction with the installation position of the engine, a weight distribution of 44 to 56 percent between the front and rear axles is to be achieved.

The mid-engine moves the passenger cell far forward. The wheelbase is comparatively long at 2,650 mm and has short body overhangs.

engine

V8 engine

R8 with the bonnet open

For the market launch in April 2007, Audi installed the V8 - FSI engine with gasoline direct injection familiar from the Audi RS4 . The high-revving engine (maximum 8250  min −1 ) with a displacement of 4.2 liters has a maximum output of 309 kW (420 hp) at 7800 min −1 and a maximum torque of 430 Nm, which is available between 4500 and 6000 min −1 . The torque is available from 3,500 to 7,600 min -1 to 90 percent available to deliver over the entire speed range to provide enough power. The Audi R8 accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds and should reach 301 km / h according to Audi. The power-to-weight ratio is 5.3 kg / kW (2.9 kg / PS). With the introduction of the V8 engine in the Spyder model, a revised version of the engine appeared in mid-2010 with a maximum output of 316 kW (430 hp).

V10 engine

The V10 petrol engine with direct petrol injection (FSI) known from the Audi S6 C6 has been available in a modified form in the R8 since April 2009 . The high revving engine with 5.2 liter displacement reaches a maximum output of 386 kW (525 hp) at 8000 min -1 and a maximum torque of 530 Nm at 6500 min -1 . The Audi R8 V10 accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 316 km / h (4.1 s or 313 km / h for the Spyder). The power-to-weight ratio is 4.4 kg / kW (3.2 kg / PS) (Spyder 4.7 kg / kW or 3.4 kg / PS).

In the summer of 2010, the V10 engine appeared in a more powerful version in the limited R8 GT . Here, the 5.2-liter aggregate maximum of 412 kW (560 hp) at 8000 min -1 and a maximum torque of 540 Nm at 6500 min -1 . The GT model accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 s (top speed: 320 km / h). Thanks to various weight reductions on this model, the power-to-weight ratio is 3.9 kg / kW (2.9 kg / PS).

Like the R8 racing car, the car has dry sump lubrication with a separate oil reservoir, which shifts the engine's center of gravity further down and ensures optimum lubrication even under extreme lateral acceleration.

Electric drive

At the end of 2012, the R8 e-tron should appear as a variant with an electric drive. The vehicle is to be powered by two electric motors with a total of 280 kW (381 hp) and 820 Nm of torque.

drive

The Audi R8 has either a manually shifted six-speed gearbox or, optionally, the automated gearbox called R Tronic , the latter being operated with a gearshift lever in the center console or with a gearshift paddle on the steering wheel. In addition, the switching times can be shortened using a sport mode. In 2012 the R Tronic was replaced by the 7-speed dual clutch transmission S Tronic .

The R8 has a clutch - controlled all-wheel drive from Lamborghini . The rear axle is primarily driven, the front axle is driven via a viscous coupling which, depending on the speed difference between the axles, directs part of the drive force forward.

landing gear

The wheels are individually suspended at the front and rear on double wishbones . The components are partly forged from aluminum. The rack and pinion steering has hydraulic power assistance.

Shock absorbers are either the standard gas pressure shock absorbers on the V8 model or the adaptive damper system Audi magnetic ride , which is used as standard on the V10 model. Magnetorheological fluid is used for magnetic ride instead of conventional damper oil . The viscosity can be changed via an electromagnetic field and the chassis adapts to the driving situation. Programs such as sport or comfort are possible at the push of a button.

The driving stability and chassis control systems as well as the electrical system come from the Audi A4 B7 .

lighting

The V8 models were fitted with xenon headlights as standard . A daytime running light made up of twelve individual LEDs is also integrated in the headlight . The rear lights of the R8 are also made using LED technology.

In 2007, a full-LED headlight was announced as the first production vehicle for the R8 . This headlight variant has been available as an option since mid-2008. In the V10 model, the LED headlights were standard equipment. In contrast to the xenon headlights, the daytime running lights here do not consist of individual LEDs, but light up as a continuous LED strip.

The Audi R8 LMX has a laser high beam.

design

The design of the R8 is the serial translation of the design language of the Le Mans quattro design study and the Audi RSQ from the film I, Robot , which were all developed from the same formal concept (shoulder line on the side continued to form a circumferential band). The designer of all three sister vehicles is Julian Hönig .

The two available models are visually different from each other. So the V10 compared to the V8 variant u. a .:

  • larger simple exhaust tailpipes left and right (until the facelift the V8 has two smaller tailpipes left and right),
  • a modified grille with horizontal and vertical chrome struts,
  • further exhibited "sideblades" (vertical air openings on the C-pillar),
  • black painted inserts in the rear bumper ,
  • darkened taillights as well
  • a V10 logo on the front fenders and in the instrument cluster .

Price and fuel consumption

According to Audi, the fuel consumption of the V8 engine should be around 14.2 liters per 100 km and CO 2 emissions at 332 g / km (sequential R tronic gearbox : 12.4 l or 289 g CO 2 ). The base price is 113 500  euros for the model with 6-speed gearbox and 118 400  euros for equipping with R tronic . For the Spyder with V8, the entry-level price for both transmission variants is 11 each 300  euros more than that of the coupé. The V8 Spyder consumes 14.4 l per 100 km ( R tronic 12.6 l) and has CO 2 emissions of 337 g (294 g).

The R8 Coupé with V10 engine was available from 154 600  euros. The Spyder had a base price of 165 900  euros  . With the R tronic , fuel consumption is 13.1 l or 305 g CO 2 . The consumption of the Spyder is 0.2 liters above that of the Coupé in both transmission variants. The CO 2 emissions are 5 g per km higher. The coupé model was also available with a maximum output of 404 kW (550 hp). The fuel consumption is 12.9 l / 100 km or 299 g CO 2 / km. The base price was 173,200 euros.

The limited Audi R8 GT , released in summer 2010, was available from a purchase price of 193,000 euros. This model, which is only available with R tronic , has a consumption of 14.4 l per 100 km (CO 2 emissions 335 g).

R8 Spyder

In September 2009, Audi presented the open roadster model known as the “Spyder” at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt . Compared to the closed version, the vertical air intake openings in the C-pillar area, known as "sideblades", are omitted. Instead, two air scoops were integrated into the convertible top compartment for the fabric hood. The entire convertible top compartment and other side parts of the rear are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to save weight - the Spyder weighs only 100 kg more than the Coupé.

The R8 Spyder was available from May 2010 and initially only with the ten-cylinder engine. The retail price is in the basic configuration 14 000 euros above that of the comparable coupé.

From July 2010, the V8 engine familiar from the Coupé could also be ordered for the Spyder. Delivery started in November 2010.

Facelift

Audi R8 Coupé (2012-2015)

In autumn 2012 the Audi R8 received a facelift .

The xenon headlights were omitted, instead all models now received standard revised LED headlights and redesigned taillights. The look of the single-frame radiator grille has been adapted to that of other Audi models. In addition, the cross struts in the front bumper are painted in black or chrome, depending on the engine variant. The tailpipes of the V8 and V10 models are now identical (one tailpipe each on the left and right) - only on the V10 plus they are painted black.

Other models

R8 GT Coupé

In May 2010, the R8 GT, limited to 333 units and only available as a coupé, was released  . In addition to the V10 engine, which has been upgraded by 26 kW (35 PS), the vehicle is 100 kg lighter and is also suitable for use thanks to the optional "Race Package", which includes a roll bar , Schroth four-point seat belts , fire extinguisher and battery emergency stop switch suitable on the racetrack. The standard equipment of the GT model includes the sequential 6-speed manual transmission (with the vehicle number printed on the top of the gear lever), ceramic brake discs and bucket seats. Externally, the GT stands out thanks to an optimized and modified body.

The GT Coupé was from 193 000 euros available.

R8 GT Spyder

In the summer of 2011, the GT Spyder came onto the market after the R8 GT Coupé .

The Spyder has the same drive unit as the Coupé version. The GT Spyder is 155 kilograms lighter than the V10 Spyder. The weight reduction was made possible through the use of carbon fiber (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP).

Like the R8 GT Coupé , the GT Spyder was only built 333 times.

R8 V12 TDI concept

At the Detroit Motor Show in early 2008 was the first time an R8 with 6.0-liter V12 - diesel engine as a concept car to be seen. As with the V8 petrol engine, the 16.6 cm longer diesel engine with a classic 60 ° cylinder angle is installed behind the driver. The study is intended to establish Audi's TDI diesel technology , which has successfully established itself in the Le Mans racing prototype R10 TDI , now also in the R8 road sports car. The diesel engine with TDI technology has a maximum output of 368 kW (500 hp) and a maximum torque of 1000 Nm, which is available between 1750 and 3000 revolutions per minute. This means that the diesel R8 should accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the vehicle with the V8 petrol engine. The top speed should increase from 301 km / h with the gasoline engine to around 325 km / h.

The consumption of the diesel engine, on the other hand, should be well below that of the gasoline engines. Audi states that it is below 10 l / 100 km in the EU third mix . In addition, exhaust gas aftertreatment, which is unusually comprehensive for a concept vehicle, should make the diesel even cleaner: the R8 V12 TDI has two particle filters and what is known as clean diesel technology, which - like Daimler's Bluetec technology  - is intended to significantly reduce the nitrogen oxide content of the exhaust gases. This meant that the R8 should meet the Euro 6 emissions standard that came into force in 2014.

The look of the diesel model has also been redesigned: Larger, more distinctive air inlets at the front, enlarged “sideblades” in the lower area, a rear section with enlarged air outlets and four angular exhaust pipes make the R8 appear even more “beefy” overall.

In 2009 Audi announced that it would not produce the R8 V12 TDI in series.

R8 LMS

In summer 2008, Audi Sport presented the Audi R8 LMS (internal R16), a racing version of the Audi R8. This racing car, which will be in racing from 2009, is built according to the FIA GT3 regulations and differs in some places from the production car. A rear-wheel drive was required due to the regulations ( all-wheel drive is not allowed), a larger rear wing was installed and the front was also changed.

The output of over 368 kW (500 hp) is transmitted via a sequential six-speed sports transmission. A sequential, unsynchronized, straight-toothed gearbox with racing gear set, which Holinger manufactures, can be found in the standard gearbox housing . The gearshift is operated electronically with paddles on the steering wheel, and gear changes are carried out pneumatically by an actuator on the transmission. The control units of the engine and gearshift automatically coordinate the gear change and the necessary double- declutching. The Audi R8 LMS is not street legal.

In 2012 the successor to the Audi R8 LMS, the Audi R8 LMS ultra, appeared . This is 40 kg lighter and 7 kW more powerful than the most powerful model of its predecessor.

R8 e-tron

The R8 e-tron  - a variant with two electric motors  - should appear at the end of 2012 . The electric motors should have a combined output of 280 kW (381 hp) and provide 820 Nm of torque. In November 2012, however, Audi put production of this vehicle on hold without ever having delivered a vehicle to a customer. Audi stated that the battery supplier was to blame for the vehicle's lack of technical maturity.

A special feature of the vehicle was that a digital interior mirror was used because there was no rear window. A tiny camera delivers high-resolution images of the area behind the car, which are shown on a 7.7-inch screen.

R8 V10 plus

Also in 2012, the R8  V10 plus was presented as the successor to the R8  GT . The maximum output here has been increased by 18 kW to 404 kW (550 PS) compared to the V10 model. Other visual changes are full-LED headlights, dynamic indicators and minor modifications to the cockpit or in the apron. There was also a new S-tronic transmission for the new R8  V10 plus , which with seven speed levels ensures even faster and almost jerk-free gear changes. Another new feature is the ceramic brake, which is 12 kg lighter and, with a few other changes, leads to a weight saving of 50 kg to 1670 kg.

The Audi R8 V10 plus started at 173 200 euros.

R8 LMX

The Audi R8 LMX edition model, limited to 99 units, has a 5.2-liter V10 FSI engine with a maximum of 419 kW (570 hp). It is one of the first production cars in the world to go on sale with built-in laser high beam. The LED front headlights are each equipped with a laser spot that becomes active when the high beam is switched on from a speed of 60 km / h. The light cone of the new LED laser light combination has twice the beam range of a normal full LED headlight. The diameter of the blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers is 0.3 mm. The blue laser light is converted into white light with a color temperature of 5500 Kelvin using a fluorescent substance. The Audi R8 LMX came in Germany in summer 2014 for 210 000 euros on the market.
