Matrix Reloaded (original title: The Matrix Reloaded ) is a science fiction film from 2003 and the sequel to Matrix from 1999. Again, the Wachowski siblings , who also wrote the screenplay, directed. The leading roles were cast again with Keanu Reeves , Laurence Fishburne , Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving . In November 2003, the third part, Matrix Revolutions, appeared .

action

The plot begins a short time after the first film ends . Neo, now aware of his powers, still doubts he will be the chosen one. Meanwhile, the machines are preparing to take Zion, the human city.

In the further course of the story, the occupation of the Nebuchadnezzar set out on their way to Zion in order to swear the local population to the impending war and to convince the council of elders of a counter-initiative. Against the will of the chief responsible for the defense of Zion, Commander Lock, Morpheus gets the permission of the council of elders for his counterinitiative. The crews of two other ships join him. The plot is split into two threads, one taking place within the matrix and one in the real world. Recurring characters include the oracle that Neo seeks out to fight his doubts, and the oracle's bodyguard, Seraph, who tests Neo in a competition. Agent Smith, who is no longer part of the matrix, now has the ability to reproduce infinitely in this part.

The oracle advises Neo that he can only prevent the attack with the help of the keymaker, who is the only one who can give them access to the machines' central computer. However, this key maker is in the hands of the Merovingian. After the key maker is freed, Morpheus and Neo get into a conflict with Smith, but are able to gain access to the central computer in good time. There Neo meets the architect of the Matrix, who tells him about the plan of the machines and the past versions of the Matrix. This tells Neo that he is nothing more than an anomaly in the code of the Matrix. Meanwhile, Trinity is in a fight against an agent. The Architect points this out to Neo and gives him the choice of returning to the Matrix and saving Trinity or leaving the Matrix and restarting her, all of the people living in the Matrix would die. Out of love for Trinity, Neo decides to return to the Matrix and thus destroys the machine's plan. Neo is late, however. Trinity, who dies fatally injured in Neo's arms, is brought back to life by Neo. Both leave the matrix.

In the real world, Morpheus' ship is attacked by guards. The crew leaves the ship before it is destroyed. Neo bundles his forces and manages to use them outside of the matrix and turn off the guards. Meanwhile, Zion sends two ships to pick up the crew. Neo, who saved the lives of the others through this show of strength, fell into a coma after the fact.

Meanwhile, the machines are drawing closer to Zion.

production

Most of the film was filmed at Fox Studios in Australia . Shooting started on March 1, 2001 and the shooting ended on August 21, 2002, with the third part, Matrix Revolutions , being filmed directly. The highway scenes were filmed at Naval Air Station Alameda in Alameda , California . A 1.5 mile stretch of highway was built on the old runway, specially designed for the film.

backgrounds

  • General Motors donated 300 cars for film production. All 300 cars were destroyed.
  • In the scene in which Persephone shoots one of the Merovingians' helpers (these are faulty programs that resemble ghosts and vampires) with a silver pistol, the 1960 film Dracula and His Brides is playing in the background .
  • The book that Persephone uses to open the secret door in order to get to the key maker is Die Welt als Will and Idea of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer .
  • Cinematographer Bill Pope has a guest appearance in the film as the security guard who “counts sheep”.
  • Gloria Foster , who portrays the oracle in the film, died on September 29, 2001 before filming was finished. For the second part she was able to turn off almost all the planned scenes, but had not yet started any scene for the third part of the trilogy. In the following film, Matrix Revolutions , she was replaced by Mary Alice .
  • The singer Aaliyah was originally intended for the role of Zee, but she was killed in a plane crash on August 25, 2001. The scenes already filmed with her were not used in the film. Her role was taken on by Nona Gaye , the daughter of the singer Marvin Gaye .
  • In addition to the film, the nine-part anime series Animatrix and the computer game Enter the Matrix were released.
  • It was released in the US on May 15, 2003 and in Germany on May 22, 2003.

“The playful-philosophical background suffers mainly from the breathlessness of the effects, with long dialogues alternating uninspired with noisy action and fighting sequences. The profundity of the conceptual design is lost, as is the sense of timing. "

"Revolutionary action cinema that stimulates the head and circulation - despite some lengths."
