The VW EA888 (EA = development order) or modular gasoline engine kit is a gasoline engine series from Volkswagen AG with four cylinders. The engine generation has been used in various vehicles of the Volkswagen Group since 2008. It is the successor to the EA113 series. The engine was installed in the models of the GTI series in the Golf V – VII, as well as in various Audi models including the Audi A4, A5, A6, Q5, Q7 and the Audi S3.
A major difference to the previous EA113 series is the reduced cylinder wall thickness from 4.0 mm to 3.5 mm. The drive takes place via a control chain instead of a toothed belt in the EA113. The diameter of the main bearings of the crankshaft has been reduced from 52 mm to 48 mm.
The third generation of the VW EA888 is now being produced. The motors of the 1st and 2nd generation only fulfilled the Euro 5 standard , motors of the 3rd generation Euro 6. In the current 3rd generation control devices from Siemens are used instead of the former Bosch.

Partly increased oil consumption
Undersized oil control rings were installed in the first EA888 engines. The small dimensioning should have been chosen to keep the friction low. The oil control rings are used to return oil and combustion residues from the cylinder, but these substances cannot be completely removed with the undersized rings. Some of them remain in the combustion chamber and the bores of the oil control rings coke - the result is a significant increase in oil consumption from 40–70,000 km. It can rise to more than a liter per thousand kilometers; in some cases, significantly higher consumption is also reported.
Different solutions are currently being offered. The oil control rings are sometimes replaced by other models. In some cases, the holes in the existing oil control rings are enlarged. The entire piston can also be exchanged, but the connecting rods must then also be exchanged. The costs are stated between EUR 2,500 and EUR 6,500. It is recommended that you also replace the timing chain and the chain tensioner in the course of this repair, as the affected motors tend to damage these elements with considerable consequential damage.
There are different reports on how long the undersized oil control rings have been used. Initially, the period from 2008 to mid-2011 was mentioned. According to later reports, a significantly improved oil control ring was only used in models from 2015 onwards.
In a judgment from 2017, the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court assessed an oil consumption of just under one liter per thousand kilometers in an affected engine from the VW EA888 series as a material defect; the buyer - a consumer - could effectively withdraw from the sales contract and the dealer had to take back the vehicle for a refund of the purchase price.
