Among other things, he was Belgian KF2 champion in 2008 and second in the KF2-CIK-FIA karting world championship in 2009 . In 2010 Vandoorne switched to formula racing and won the F4 Eurocup 1.6 with six wins with 159 to 123 points ahead of Norman Nato .

In 2011 Vandoorne competed for KTR in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . With a third place as the best result, he reached fifth place in the drivers' standings and was the best-placed driver without a win. In addition, Vandoorne drove for KRT in the northern European Formula Renault . There, too, Vandoorne was the best driver who did not win a race. With four second places as the best results, he finished the season in third place in the drivers' championship. In 2012 Vandoorne switched to Josef Kaufmann Racing . He almost had a perfect weekend at the Nürburgring . He achieved both pole positions , won both races and set the fastest race lap once. It was his two first victories in the Eurocup. Overall, Vandoorne won four races and only finished the last race in which he was eliminated, not among the top four drivers. With 244 to 234 points, he prevailed against Daniil Kwjat . The two had each scored more than twice as many points as all other opponents. In addition, Vandoorne completed three events of the Northern European Formula Renault. He won five out of seven races. In the overall standings, he was ninth.

In 2013 Vandoorne switched to Fortec Motorsport in Formula Renault 3.5 . In doing so, he followed the same path as last year's champion Robin Frijns , who had also switched to Fortec Motorsport in the Formula Renault 3.5 after winning the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In addition, Vandoorne received a sponsorship contract with the Formula 1 racing team McLaren . He won in Monza and Spa-Francorchamps and both races at the Moscow Raceway . With ten podium finishes and 214 points, he was at the end of the season behind Kevin Magnussen , who was also in the McLaren promotional squad and had reached 274 points, in second place. Within the team, Vandoorne clearly prevailed against Oliver Webb , who was 15th with 27 points. In addition, Vandoorne took part in two races in the FIA GT series in a McLaren for Boutsen Ginion Racing in 2013 , making his debut in GT racing.

In 2014 Vandoorne received a cockpit in the GP2 series at the ART Grand Prix . In his debut race in as-Sachir he achieved his first GP2 victory. After two events without points, Vandoorne always managed to be on the podium in at least one race at the next race weekends. After winning the sprint race in Mogyoród , Vandoorne dueled Raffaele Marciello for victory in the main race at Spa-Francorchamps in the rain and came second. At the next main race in Monza , he won again. In the following main race in Sochi , Vandoorne was the dominant driver. He started from pole position and led the race for long stretches. However, since there was a safety car phase and Vandoorne missed the pit entrance before it, he had no chance of winning because he still had to complete his mandatory pit stop. He finally crossed the finish line in fifth place. At the subsequent season finale on Yas Island , Vandoorne won his fourth GP2 race in the main race. He finished his debut season in second place. With 229 to 276 points he was behind Jolyon Palmer . Within the team, Vandoorne prevailed clearly against Takuya Izawa , who had scored 26 points. In addition, Vandoorne was a substitute driver for the Formula 1 racing team McLaren. In 2015 , Vandoorne completed his second GP2 season for ART Grand Prix. In the first races in as-Sachir , Barcelona , Monte Carlo and Spielberg , he won the main races. He also finished second in three sprint races. At the next two events he came third and second. He then won the main race in Spa-Francorchamps . Two podium finishes followed in Monza and one more in Sochi . Vandoorne had already been confirmed as the new GP2 champion two events before the end of the season. He won again at the next two main races in as-Sachir and on Yas Island . Vandoorne achieved seven wins and a total of 16 podiums in 21 races. At the end of the season he was with 341.5 points well ahead of the overall runner-up Alexander Rossi with 181.5 points. He won in Mimasaka and Suzuka . As the best Honda driver, he finished the season in fourth championship place. In addition, Vandoorne was a reserve driver at McLaren in the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship . In this role he made his Formula 1 debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix instead of the injured regular driver Fernando Alonso . With tenth place, he immediately achieved a point.
