run
The 2010 GP2 series racing calendar was released on December 18, 2009. A total of ten racing weekends were held, which were part of the Formula 1 supporting program. The race in Portimão , which was also planned, was canceled.
Season report
A total of 32 pilots were deployed in the 2010 season. With Jules Bianchi ( Formula 3 Euro Series ), Marcus Ericsson ( Japanese Formula 3 Championship ) and Fabio Leimer ( International Formula Masters ), three reigning champions switched to the GP2 series. Most of the new drivers came from the World Series by Renault and the international Formula Master. A total of five drivers who had started in the previous season switched to Formula 1 . With Romain Grosjean ( Auto GP ), Edoardo Mortara (Formula 3 Euro Series) and Davide Rigon ( Superleague Formula ), three drivers who drove in GP2 in 2009 won the championship title in another racing series. During the season, the experienced GP2 drivers Luca Filippi , Grosjean and Álvaro Parente returned to the series.
In the first four races, the winners celebrated their first victory. At the season opener in Barcelona, Charles Pic was the third driver to ever win his debut race. In the sprint race, Leimer secured his first victory in the second race. In Monaco, too, there was the first victory for two GP2 drivers. Sergio Pérez won his first race in his second season in the main race and Jérôme D'Ambrosio won a GP2 race for the first time in race 44 in his third season. On the following six race weekends, Pastor Maldonado won the main race and set a new record. In addition, with these victories he collected important points that ultimately helped him to the championship title. The later runner-up Pérez won the sprint race three times during this period. In the other three sprint races, Dani Clos , Ericsson and Giacomo Ricci won the first time . Two other debut winners were Sam Bird and Christian Vietoris . With Davide Valsecchi , who also won one race, there were eleven different winners in the 2010 season. Maldonado won the championship with two races left in Monza. At the season finale, Pérez secured the runner-up title ahead of Bianchi. While the gaps at the front were slightly larger, the pilots in positions three to six were within four points.
Several serious accidents occurred this season. Josef Král collided with Rodolfo González in Valencia and then retired for five race weekends with two broken vertebrae. In Mogyoród there was a collision between Bianchi and Ho-Pin Tung , in which both fractures of the lumbar vertebra tied. Bianchi was able to return to his cockpit after an operation and without missing a race weekend. Tung did not have to undergo an operation, but was out for two race weekends.
At 27, Tung was the oldest pilot that season. The youngest driver was Max Chilton , who made his debut in the series at the age of 19.
