Giacomo Ricci (born March 30, 1985 in Milan ) is an Italian team manager in motorsport and former automobile racing driver .

Career

Ricci began his motorsport career in 1992 in kart racing , which he practiced until 2000. In 2001 he switched to formula racing and started in the German Formula BMW . At the end of the season he finished seventh overall with a win. He also competed in an Italian Formula Renault race . In 2002 he did not contest a complete season in any racing series, but started in some races of the German Formula BMW, the German Formula Renault and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . Although he had already driven in the Italian and German Formula Renault as well as in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, in 2003 he competed in the Spanish Formula Junior 1600, which is also part of Formula Renault but is of lower ranking. He finished fourth in the drivers' championship.

In 2004 Ricci did not contest a full season again and drove eight races in the World Series by Nissan and four races in the Euroseries 3000 . In 2005 he contested a full season in the Euroseries 3000, which had since been renamed the Italian Formula 3000 . Starting for the Astromega team , he achieved four podium positions and, although he had not won a race, finished third overall. In 2006 Ricci stayed in this championship, which was now called Euroseries 3000 again. He competed for the championship team from the previous season, FMS International , and won the championship with five wins and a total of thirteen podium places.

In 2007 Ricci focused on North American motorsport and competed in the Atlantic Championship . Although he could not record a win or a podium place, he finished sixth in the drivers' championship. He was the third best rookie of the 2007 season behind Franck Perera and Robert Wickens . As the season ended in August, he returned to the Euroseries 3000 after the end of the season and won a race straight away. With another victory, he finished fifth in the overall standings at the end of the season, although he did not start in most of the races.

In 2008 Ricci got the chance to replace the injured Michael Herck at David Price Racing in the GP2 series . Ricci drove as the second driver alongside Diego Nunes for two weekends , but was then replaced by Andy Souček . In 2008 Ricci also drove for several teams in the International GT Open sports car racing series . With Giacomo Petrobelli and later with Matteo Bobbi , he finished two races on the podium in the more powerful GTA category. Before that, however, he drove an Aston Martin DBRS9 in the near-series GTS class, which he and Max Wiser finished as class winner at the second race in Spa-Francorchamps. In formula racing, he also took part in two races each of the Italian Formula 3 Championship and the International Formula Masters .

The 2008/2009 season of the GP2 Asia Series denied Ricci completely. After a racing weekend for Trident Racing , he switched back to David Price Racing, for whom he also started in the main European series of GP2 in the 2009 season . After four race weekends he was replaced by Franck Perera . In sports car racing, however, he was given a permanent cockpit in a Ferrari F430 GTC in the International GT Open . At the side of Michele Rugolo , he won a championship run and finished five more races on the podium in the higher-performance class. In addition, Farnbacher Racing gave him the opportunity to take part in a run in the Le Mans Series .

For the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 Ricci returned to David Price Racing and started again as Herck's teammate. After scoring his first points in the GP2 Asia series in the main race on the Yas Marina Circuit on the second race weekend , he achieved his first podium finish in third in the following sprint race. After a second place at the first performance in Sakhir , he won the last race at the second weekend in Sakhir. At the end of the season he finished third overall with runner-up Luca Filippi . Ricci then stayed with David Price Racing and also contested the regular 2010 season of the GP2 series for the British racing team. After missing points for several race weekends after finishing second at the season opener, which was his first point and podium finish in the GP2 series, he achieved his first GP2 victory on the Hungaroring . Despite his victory, David Price Racing separated from Ricci after the race because he could no longer pay for the cockpit for the remaining races. At the end of the season he was 13th in the drivers' championship. He then competed for RP Motorsport at a race weekend in the Auto GP , the successor to the Euroseries 3000. With a second place as the best result, he finished twelfth overall. He also took part in two Superleague Formula racing weekends .

In 2011 Ricci was not active in any racing series. In November, he took part in a GP2 individual event for Super Nova Racing . He graduated from 15th place. In 2012 Ricci competed for Zele Racing at two Auto GP World Series events. He achieved a podium placement with a third place. For the last race of the season he returned to the Auto GP , this time for the MLR71 Racing Team . He finished eleventh in the drivers' championship. For the 2013 season Ricci received a full-time cockpit for the Auto GP with the MLR71 Racing Team. However, the contract was terminated after the first race weekend. Ricci also took on management tasks for the racing team. Ricci also took part in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 2013 .

In 2014 Ricci switched completely to motorsport management. At Trident Racing he became team manager of the GP2 and GP3 teams.
