The Atlantic Championship is a North American youth racing series in the monoposto area. In the career ladder of young pilots, she mostly followed engagements in the Star Mazda Series , the various F2000 championships or Formula BMW and had a similar status as her competing series Indy Lights .
overview
The Atlantic series carried out their races based on the Atlantic racing formula and, in recent years, exclusively on street and street circuits. This differentiates it from many other American automobile racing series that Ovals also attend. With regard to the preparation for a possible entry into the IndyCar Series , America's highest monoposto class, this was increasingly seen as a disadvantage.
history
The first race of the Atlantic Championship took place on May 26, 1974 at the Westwood Circuit in Canada. In the period that followed, it was able to establish itself as the top junior series for the IndyCar World Series , with two parallel series in 1976 and from 1985 to 1990. The series, which was reunified in 1991, was part of the supporting program of the Champ Car World Series up to and including 2007 and was considered to be the better junior series in comparison to the IndyCar Series competitor Indy Pro Series . This assessment has changed since the end of the Champ Car series, however, in favor of the rival now renamed "Indy Lights", since the Atlantic series now had to compete under various main series such as the American Le Mans Series or Grand-Am Sports Car Series while the championship organized by the IRL can run its races continuously in the supporting program of the IndyCar Series.
Women in the series
In its more than 30-year history, several female racing drivers have caused a stir. The first of them was Danica Patrick , who was able to achieve a pole position, three podiums and third place overall in the 2004 season. The first woman to win a race was Katherine Legge , who won the Long Beach race in 2005 . With two more victories, she also finished third in the championship. The Swiss Simona de Silvestro surpassed the record of victorious runs with one success in 2008 and three in 2009, but had to be content with third place at the end of last season.

In 2010, for the first time, no races were held because the field would have been too small. There were no racing events in 2011 either.
At the end of 2011, Formula Race Promotions , the organizer of the F2000 and F1600 Formula F Championship Series ("US Formula Ford "), announced that the Atlantic Championship Series was a new edition of the championship for SCCA- legal Formula Atlantic vehicles was created, which would initially host three weekends of two races each as part of the other two championships, of which the top five of each driver would then be counted towards the final championship status. Hoosier Racing Tire Corp was presented as the tire supplier .
