Career
Beginnings in motorsport (1993-2004)
Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Patrick began her career in karting , where she was active from 1993 to 1998. In 1998 she was in the winter series of the British Formula Vauxhall her debut in Formula racing . She then drove in the British Formula Vauxhall and finished ninth in the overall standings. For the next two years she drove in the British Formula Ford and finished 19th in 2000 and 25th overall in 2001. She was more successful at the British Formula Ford Festival, finishing in second place in 2000 behind her teammate Anthony Davidson . So she achieved the best placement that an American had ever achieved in this race.
In 2002 Patrick returned to the United States and started some races in the Barber Dodge Pro Series , which she finished in 13th place overall. In 2003 she moved to the Rahal team in Formula Atlantic . She was on the podium twice and finished sixth in the drivers' championship at the end of the season. In 2004 she played her second season in Formula Atlantic for Rahal and improved to third place overall with three podium finishes. Patrick was stronger than her teammates in both seasons, but she couldn't win any race.
IndyCar Series (2005-2011)
In 2005 Patrick switched to the IndyCar Series and stayed with her team, which was called Rahal Letterman Racing in that series . It was most successful for her with the Indy 500 . She was only the fourth woman to qualify for the prestigious race. In addition, she immediately set other records: She achieved the best starting position (4) and the best final result (4) ever achieved by a woman. She was also the first woman to lead the race. Although she had to admit defeat to her teammate Vítor Meira at the end of the season , she was better than her second teammate Buddy Rice , who had won the Indy 500 last year, and finished twelfth overall. She also achieved pole position three times and was the best newcomer of the season. In 2006 she played her second IndyCar Series season for Rahal Letterman Racing. After her teammate Paul Dana had a fatal accident during training for the first race, she skipped the season opener. At the end of the season she finished ninth overall and was again ahead of Rice, who was her teammate again. As in the previous year, fourth places were her best placements.
In 2007 she moved to Andretti Green Racing . After finishing third twice, she finished second in the penultimate race. In the overall standings, she finished seventh overall, well behind her teammate Dario Franchitti , who had won the championship, and Tony Kanaan . In 2008 she stayed with Andretti Green Racing. After starting the season with two placings among the top ten drivers, she won her first ever race in formula racing in Motegi . She only took the lead shortly before the end after an overtaking maneuver against Hélio Castroneves . With her victory, she became the first woman to win an IndyCar race. In the further course of the season she drove more times among the top ten drivers and finally came in sixth overall.
In 2009 Patrick drove again in the IndyCar Series and stayed with Andretti Green Racing. Her best result that year was the Indy 500, which she finished third. At the end of the season, she finished fifth overall as the best female pilot in her team. In 2010 Patrick contested her sixth IndyCar season and stayed with her team, which had since been renamed Andretti Autosport . After a poor start to the season on the circuit, she climbed to the ovals and, after finishing the Indianapolis 500 in sixth place, was second in Fort Worth . At the season finale in Homestead , she fought against her teammate Kanaan for second place in the last few laps and won the duel. At the end of the season, she finished tenth behind three of her team-mates in the overall standings. She also took part in 13 races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series . She never finished in the top 10 and finished the season 43rd. In 2011 Patrick stayed with Andretti Autosport in the IndyCar Series. After finishing only once among the top ten drivers in the first four races on street circuits, she achieved a top 10 finish four times in the next five oval races. Her best finish was fifth in West Allis . She finished the season in tenth place. She also took part in several races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series for JR Motorsports . With a fourth place as the best result, she was in 26th place in the championship.
