The 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil is an IndyCar Series race that will take place on May 27, 2018 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway , Indiana . It is the sixth race of the 2018 IndyCar season .

Race activities formally began on May 12th with the IndyCar Grand Prix on the IMS Road Course. The first practice session for the 500 mile race took place on May 15th. Qualifications are dated May 20th and 21st. The Carb Day , traditionally the last day of practice is scheduled for May 25 The Freedom 100 of the Indy Lights takes place on the same day .

background

The previous year's race was the third and also the last Indianapolis 500 in which the aero kits from the two manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda were used on the Dallara DW12 . Since the 2018 season, the IndyCar has been driving again with a standard chassis, which is now called 'IR18'. For the first time since the Indy 500 in 1996, vehicles will have a roll bar without an airbox.

Rule changes

  • The training session on Monday after the IndyCar Grand Prix taking place on the street circuit was canceled, as Monday will now be used to convert the route from the road configuration to the oval configuration. So that the lost training time can still be carried out, the following training units start at 11 a.m. local time and not at 12 noon.
  • The minimum weight of the vehicles has been increased by 10 pounds to 1590 pounds. This rule applies to all superspeedways. The reason for this are new safety features that come with the new vehicle.
  • Fewer points are awarded for qualification. The top 9 drivers will receive points according to the scheme (9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1). Before that, each of the 33 qualified drivers received points.

Attendees

Takuma Sato enters the race as last year's winner.

The list of participants was announced on May 1st and includes 35 vehicles. Previously there had been rumors about another vehicle that Buddy Lazier should have driven. But in the end it didn't happen.

Pietro Fittipaldi should have driven the number 19 car for Dale Coyne Racing . On May 4th, however, he had a serious accident in qualifying for the Six Hours of Spa of the World Endurance Championship . In the accident, he broke both legs, whereupon he was replaced by Zachary Claman DeMelo .

Four rookies are registered for the race. In addition to Zachary Claman DeMelo, these are Matheus Leist , Robert Wickens and Kyle Kaiser .

Test, October 2017

After the end of the season, the two manufacturers were allowed to test the new aerokits for five days each in December. Honda decided to use one of these test days in Indianapolis. On October 26, both James Hinchcliffe and Scott Dixon completed over 130 laps each without incident. Low temperatures delayed the start of the session, so that it was only possible to drive in the afternoon. No lap times were announced.

Open Test, Monday April 30, 2018

  • Weather : 22 ° C, sunny and clear

This test was originally supposed to take place in March, but has been postponed due to bad weather. Participation in this session was open to all full-time IndyCar drivers, with a total of 21 drivers taking part. Rookies and drivers who still had to complete the refresher course were not allowed. Tony Kanaan drove both the fastest lap of the day at 226,181 mph (364,003 km / h) and the fastest no-tow lap at 223,240 mph (359,270 km / h. The session was divided into two parts. Marco Andretti took part in the morning session 223,997 mph (360,488 km / h) before being displaced by Kanaan. Towards the end of the test, Josef Newgarden drove a test with the windscreen, the first such test on a super speedway, with a total of 21 riders completing 1,820 laps without incident.

Rookie Orientation Program / Refresher Tests, Tuesday May 1, 2018

  • Weather : 27 ° C, sunny and clear

A total of four drivers were planned for the rookie test: Pietro Fittipaldi , Kyle Kaiser , Matheus Leist and Robert Wickens . In addition, three drivers should complete the refresher test: Jay Howard , Sage Karam and Danica Patrick . But because Fittipaldi was racing the FIA World Endurance Championship in Spa-Francorchamps , he decided to take the test later that month. This did not happen, however, because he broke both legs at Spa and had to retire from the race. Robert Wickens was the fastest of the six drivers, driving his teammate James Hinchcliffe's car as his own car had a problem with the transmission . A total of 355 laps were completed on the day.

training

Tuesday 15th May

  • Weather : 28 ° C, occasional rain showers, later thunderstorms

The first official session consisted of three parts. During the first two hours there was a test for drivers (so-called veteran drivers ) who did not have to take a reprocessing test or the rookie orientation. After that, two hours were reserved for them. Zachary Claman DeMelo passed his rookie test and James Davison was able to do his repetition test. Oriol Servia and Stefan Wilson started the repetition during the reserved time, but did not complete it until the next afternoon session. The remaining three hours of training were open to all drivers. At around 4:00 p.m. the session was suspended for about an hour due to a thunderstorm before it could be resumed for the rest of the hour. Simon Pagenaud set the fastest lap in 225,787 mph (363,369 km / h). The fastest "no-tow" lap was completed by Ed Carpenter in 221,512 mph (356,489 km / h).

During the training, the first minor accident occurred while preparing for the Indy 500. A good 20 minutes before the end of the session, JR Hildebrand came too high out of turn 3 and hit the wall, so that he slipped along the wall through turn 4 before briefly could stop his vehicle in front of the pit entrance. Graham Rahal drove the fastest lap of the day at 226,047 mph (363,787 km / h), while Will Power drove the fastest lap with an average speed of 223,971 mph (360,446 km / h) without the help of the slipstream.

qualification

Bump Day - Saturday May 19th

  • Weather : 26 ° C, isolated showers

Traditionally, the starting field in Indianapolis comprises 33 vehicles. As 35 vehicles were registered for the race this year, it was another bump day. The result of the qualification decided on the one hand which 33 vehicles would tackle the race and which nine drivers would qualify for the "Fast 9" shootout. The meeting was interrupted twice due to rain, but all vehicles were given the opportunity to start a qualification attempt.

Helio Castroneves set the fastest lap of the day at 228,919 mph (368,409 km / h).

Surprisingly, James Hinchliffe, who was on pole in 2016 and has already been able to attack the race three times from the front row, was unable to qualify. His first qualification attempt took place immediately after the first rain break with a suboptimal chassis setup. In the last half hour he dropped out of the top 33. The team then sent him out about a quarter of an hour before the end. During his warm-up lap, Hinchcliffe noticed a strong vibration that forced him to abandon his attempt and return to the pits. The crew tried to fix the problem, but there was not enough time to send him on another try.

Pippa Mann could not qualify either.

James Davison, whose car had to be rebuilt the night before after the accident, just qualified for the race in 33rd and thus last place.
