Leist began his motorsport career in karting in 2009 , where he remained active until 2014. Among other things, he was runner-up in the 2013 Petrobras Kart Championship. In 2014 Leist made his debut in formula racing and competed in the Brazilian Formula 3 championship . He went to three events for Hitech Racing and five events for Cesário F3 . Three third places were his best overall results. Since he competed in an older vehicle, he was classified in the B class. In this he scored two wins and was second.

In 2015 Leist moved to Europe to Double R Racing and received a cockpit in the British Formula 4 championship . In the very first race at Brands Hatch , he achieved his first podium finish with a third place. At the next event in Donington his first victory followed. With another win, he ended the season in fifth place overall. In addition, Leist made his debut for Double R Racing in the European Formula 3 championship in 2015 . He took part in an event as an injury representative for Nicolas Pohler . With Double R Racing he won the British Formula 3 Championship the following year . In 2017 he competed for Carlin in the Indy Lights series. In the overall standings, he took fourth place. The move to the IndyCar Series followed in 2018 . As a driver for AJ Foyt Enterprises , he finished 18th in the drivers' championship. In 2019 , his best placement was fourth. In the overall ranking he finished 19th.
