Career

Chaves began his motorsport career in karting in 2004 , where he remained active until 2009. He also made his debut in formula racing in 2006 and finished ninth in the Panam GP Series. In 2007 he competed in three skip barber championships. He was most successful in the Skip Barber Eastern Regional Series, in which he was runner-up behind Jordan Taylor with five wins from ten races . In addition, he started as a guest starter in a race in the Colombian Formula Renault, which he won. In 2008, Chaves competed in the Pacific Formula BMW . Although he didn't win a race, he finished fourth in the championship. He also won the Skip Barber Southern Regional Series championship and was 14th in the Skip Barber National Championship. He also took part as a guest starter in two races of the Skip Barber Western Regional Series, which he won both, and in three races of the American Formula BMW. In 2009 Chaves moved to EuroInternational in the American Formula BMW. He won five races and was on the podium in all races. With 235 to 187 he finally prevailed against his teammate Giancarlo Vilarinho , who had achieved the most victories, and won the championship title.

In 2010, Chaves left North America and moved to Europe for the Italian Formula 3 Championship , where he again competed for EuroInternational. He also changed his racing license for this season and competed as an American. With a fourth place as the best result, he finished the season in tenth place in the championship. In 2011 Chaves started for the Addax team in the GP3 series . With a fourth place as the best result, he finished the season in 19th place overall.

In 2012 Chaves returned to North America. He drove for JDC Motorsports in the Star Mazda Series . He finished every race in the top 10. With two wins and a total of ten podium finishes, he was runner- up behind Jack Hawksworth . He lost to his rival with 360 to 397 points. In 2013 , Chaves moved to Indy Lights at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports . After a retirement in the first race, Chaves finished all races in the top 4 and was on the podium all but one time. He won a race. With 449 to 460 points he was defeated by his team-mate Sage Karam and became runner-up. In 2014 Chaves moved to Belardi Auto Racing within Indy Lights . Chaves won four races, including the Freedom 100 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway . He was on the podium eleven times in 14 races. He decided the championship tied with Jack Harvey for himself. Since Harvey had also achieved four wins, the number of second places decided the title. Here Chaves was five to one ahead. Chaves also took part in four endurance races of the United SportsCar Championship for Delta Wing Racing Cars in 2014 .

In 2015 Chaves moved to the IndyCar Series for Bryan Herta Autosport . With a ninth place as the best result, he finished the season in 15th place overall.
