Stefan Wilson (born September 20, 1989 in Sheffield ) is a British automobile racing driver . He competed in the Indy Lights from 2009 to 2012 . He is the younger brother of racing car driver Justin Wilson .

Career

Wilson started in the British Formula 3 Championship in 2008.

Wilson began his motorsport career in karting at the age of nine and was active in the sport until 2006. In 2006 he moved into the single-seater racing and made his first experiences in the fall championship of the Formula Palmer Audi , which he finished in ninth place overall. In 2007 he competed in the regular championship and became runner-up in Formula Palmer Audi nine years after his brother Justin Wilson had won the championship title. He won four races and stood on the podium five more times. At the end of the season he received the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award for his achievements . As a prize, he was allowed to test a McLaren Formula 1 racing car at the end of 2009 . In 2008 he entered the national class of the British Formula 3 Championship and finished fourth in the overall standings with four wins.

In 2009, Wilson moved to North America for Indy Lights at First Motorsports , which competed in cooperation with Walker Racing . He only took part in 6 of 15 races and ended the season with fourth place as the best result in 22nd place overall. In 2010 , Wilson received an Indy Lights cockpit from Bryan Herta Autosport as a teammate of Sebastian Saavedra and started 11 of 13 races. He already achieved his first podium finish in third place at the season opener. At the end of the season he finished eleventh overall. In 2011 , Wilson completed his third Indy Lights season for Andretti Autosport . With two wins he finished third in the drivers' championship. In 2012 , Wilson only took part in one Indy Lights race for Fan Force United .

In 2013 Stefan Wilson made his debut for Dale Coyne Racing in the IndyCar Series. Together with his brother Justin, he formed the first brother pair that competed for a team in the IndyCar Series. Stefan Wilson started in a race. After two years without racing, Wilson competed in the IndyCar Series 2016 for KV Racing Technology at the Indianapolis 500 . He also took part in the North American Lamborghini Super Trofeo in 2016. There he finished fifth in the overall ranking. In 2018 he took part in the Indy 500 for Andretti Autosport for a second time. Using a different strategy, he leads three laps in the last section of the race. But because he had to refuel four laps before the end of the race, Wilson finished in 23rd place.
