Reports
background
After the Firestone 550 , Hélio Castroneves led the drivers' standings with 22 points on Marco Andretti and 27 points on Ryan Hunter-Reay .
There were two changes in the starting field. Ryan Briscoe broke Oriol Servia after a race hiatus at Panther Racing from. Ana Beatriz returned to Dale Coyne Racing's number 18 car after a three-race break and took over the car from Pippa Mann .
The IndyFest took place on Saturday evening. Andretti Sports Marketing , an Andretti family company, organized the event.
With Dario Franchitti , Tony Kanaan (twice each), Briscoe, Scott Dixon and Hunter-Reay (once each), five former winners competed in this race. Hunter-Reay was also a past winner of the Time Warner Cable Roadrunner 250 , a champ car race on the route.
training
In the first practice session, Marco Andretti was the fastest driver ahead of his teammates Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden . In the second training session, the first two positions remained unchanged. Takuma Satō was third.
Qualifying
The qualifying was held in the individual time trial. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed achieved in the process decided the order of the starting grid.
Andretti once again set the fastest lap ahead of his teammates James Hinchcliffe and Will Power . The two other Andretti pilots Hunter-Reay and EJ Viso followed in fourth and fifth. Until Power had set his time, the four Andretti drivers were in the first four positions. Sebastian Saavedra achieved his best qualifying position to date with sixth place.
run
At the start, Andretti kept the lead. Hunter-Reay and Hinchcliffe followed behind before Power, who, however, passed Hinchcliffe on the second lap. Canaan took fifth place in the initial stages. Hunter-Reay tried an attack on the lead in the tenth lap, but was unsuccessful.
On lap 21, Simona de Silvestro triggered a yellow phase with a wall contact in the fourth corner. De Silvestro took up the race again, but gave up after 48 more laps at a slower pace. At the restart, Alex Tagliani spun , which resulted in another caution period. Tagliani also took up the race again, but later gave up with a gearbox failure.
At the restart, Andretti kept the lead. However, he was overtaken by Hunter-Reay on lap 62. As a pit stop phase began shortly thereafter, Power briefly took the lead and finally Satō, who relied on a different strategy and was already in the first caution phase. In the 91st lap he pitted and briefly passed the lead to Justin Wilson and finally to Viso. A little later, on lap 98, Andretti stopped on the back straight with electronic problems. After a repair stop, he went out on the track again, but gave up the race shortly before the end.
In the yellow phase, the lead went back to Satō due to pit stops. He led in front of Castroneves, Hunter-Reay, Viso and Hinchcliffe. On the 155th lap, the second pit stop phase began under green. In this, Hunter-Reay, Viso and Power briefly took the lead until it went back to Satō. During this phase of the race, Sébastien Bourdais and Tristan Vautier gave up with technical problems. At Bourdais, a problem with the fuel pump was the cause of the failure.
In the last quarter of the race, Hunter-Reay gained ground. He first overtook Castroneves and went past Satō in the 198th lap in the lead. Shortly afterwards, Satō pitted with tire problems. A little later, Beatriz's accident triggered another yellow phase. In this the other pilots pitted for the last time. Hinchcliffe had problems changing tires. Hunter-Reay stayed ahead of Castroneves and Power at the restart. He gradually pulled away until the end of the race, while Castroneves was put under pressure by Power. Castroneves had a different strategy than Hunter-Reay and Power and had, like Satō, pitted in the first yellow phase.
Hunter-Reay eventually won ahead of Castroneves, Power, Viso, Hinchcliffe, Dixon, Satō and Franchitti. The first eight drivers were the only ones who were still in the lead. Wilson and Kanaan completed the top 10 one lap behind. Power was on the podium for the first time of the season. The first five pilots all drove with Chevrolet engines.
In the overall standings, Castroneves remained in first place. Behind them Hunter-Reay and Andretti swapped positions.
