The 97th Indianapolis 500 took place on May 26, 2013 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway near Indianapolis , Indiana , United States and was the fifth race of the 2013 IndyCar Series season .
background
After the Itaipava São Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle , Takuma Satō led the drivers' standings with 13 points over Marco Andretti and 20 points over Hélio Castroneves .
As the Indianapolis 500 has a special position on the racing calendar, no penalties for premature engine changes were imposed during the entire event. Usually, engine changes are penalized with a penalty of 10 starting positions if they were not necessary due to engine failure in a race. All engine changes during this event were sanctioned under the Indianapolis 500.
With Castroneves, Dario Franchitti (three times each), Buddy Lazier and Scott Dixon (once each) three former Indianapolis 500 winners competed. Lazier was the most experienced pilot with his 22nd participation in the Indianapolis 500. With AJ Allmendinger , Conor Daly , Carlos Muñoz and Tristan Vautier , four drivers started the race for the first time. Muñoz was the youngest competitor at 21, and Lazier the oldest at 45. 34 drivers from 13 nations took part in the event. With eleven drivers, the United States had the largest number of participants.
procedure
The Indianapolis 500 extends over a period of 16 days including the training sessions. The event starts on May 11th with free practice. All newcomers and re-entrants who have not competed in oval races for a long time must take part in the rookie and refresher program within the first two days . In this program, every rookie and refresher must complete 10 laps at constant speed between 200 and 205 mph and 15 laps at constant speed between 205 and 210 mph on the first day. For the remainder of the training session, each of these riders must complete 15 laps at a speed of at least 210 miles per hour. Drivers who are not ready on the first day of training will complete the program as soon as they begin training. There will be seven free training days with six hours of training time per day until May 17th.
Qualifying begins on May 18th, in which a vehicle and not the driver is qualified. Thus, driver changes are allowed after qualifying. However, the starting position is tied to the driver, so that pilots are placed at the end of the field after a driver change. Qualifying takes place in the individual time trial format, in which each driver drives four flying laps. First there is a two-hour free training session. Then, in a five-hour qualifying session, the first 24 vehicles that qualify for the race will be determined. Each driver has three attempts, the time of the previous attempts being deleted as soon as a new attempt is made. After that, the first nine drivers drive out of the first nine starting positions in a ninety-minute session, the Fast Nine Qualifying . The following day is the so-called bump day . After a one-hour free practice session, the remaining nine starting positions will be awarded in a six-hour qualifying session. All vehicles that are not subsequently in the top 33 did not qualify for the 500 mile race.
On May 24th is the so-called Carb-Day with a one-hour free training session. The Indianapolis 500 will finally take place on May 26th.
In contrast to all other races in the Indianapolis 500, every driver who qualifies receives points for the qualifying result.
Firestone provided 33 complete sets of Firehawk tires for each car . The same specification was used as in the previous year. There were four additional sentences for participants in the rookie training and two for participants in the refresher training. In addition, each driver who took part in the top 9 qualifying was given a new sentence for this session, but it was only allowed to be used for this session.
Changes in the starting field
For the Indianapolis 500 there were some changes in the starting field. Several teams deployed other vehicles.
- Andretti Autosport fielded a fifth vehicle for Carlos Muñoz . Muñoz also took part in the Freedom 100 , the Indy Lights race as part of the Indianapolis 500. It was Muñoz's first participation in the IndyCar Series. Ahead of the Indianapolis 500 also completed NASCAR -Pilot Kurt Busch test drives for Andretti Autosport. He drove lap times that would have allowed him to pass the rookie test. However, Busch decided against participating.
- When Team Penske returned AJ Allmendinger back into the third cockpit. Allmendinger had skipped the previous race and was last in this vehicle at Long Beach .
- Ryan Briscoe returned to the series and received the fourth car from Chip Ganassi Racing . Briscoe had been without an IndyCar cockpit since the last race of the season in Fontana in 2012 .
- Katherine Legge took over the third vehicle from Schmidt Peterson Motorsports at short notice . Legge's last IndyCar start was also in Fontana in 2012.
- Townsend Bell was signed by Panther Racing for their second car. His last race was the Indianapolis 500 last year.
- As in Long Beach, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing fielded a third vehicle. This was done by Michel Jourdain Jr. who, like Bell, last participated in the Indianapolis 500 in 2012.
- Pippa Mann received a third vehicle from Dale Coyne Racing . Mann's last starter in the IndyCar Series was in the last race of the season in 2011.
- Ed Carpenter Racing reported a second vehicle. However, the racing team did not name a driver for this car and did not use it.
- Conor Daly got the second racing car from AJ Foyt Enterprises . Daly made her debut on the series.
- At Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing , Josef Newgarden changed the number of his emergency vehicle and started with the 21st instead of the number 67.
- Buddy Lazier returned to the IndyCar Series with the family racing team Lazier Partners Racing Inc. Lazier last tried to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 in 2009 and had not participated in any IndyCar races since.
Registration list
All teams and drivers use the chassis Dallara DW12 with an aero kit from Dallara and tires from Firestone .
Source:
- Remarks
- ↑ Katherine Legge took over the vehicle on Pole Day. It had previously been reported with the number 99.
- With the exception of vehicle 91, a replacement chassis was also reported.
- Ed Carpenter Racing also reported the vehicle with the number 40. However, this was never used and a driver was never reported for this vehicle.

On the sixth day of training, the boost pressure of the engines was increased from 130 kPa to 140 kPa, so that the lap times became faster. The engine output increased by around 40 hp. At the front of the field were three Andretti Autosport vehicles . Carlos Muñoz ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti . Muñoz achieved the fastest time of the training until then.
On this training day Buddy Lazier went out on the track for the first time, so that all pilots registered at this point set a time.
Conor Daly had the first accident at this event. He lost the rear of his vehicle in the first corner and hit the barrier. He was unharmed. There was almost a second accident: shortly before the end of the race, Satō hit the dirt outside between the first two corners and he barely managed to prevent an accident.

The last day of training, known as “ Fast Friday ”, ended prematurely due to a thunderstorm. A little more than half of the planned training had been completed. Once again, three Andretti Autosport drivers were ahead. EJ Viso posted the fastest time of the entire training week ahead of his teammates Marco Andretti and Carlos Muñoz . Viso's fastest lap was also the fastest training time in Indianapolis since 2003. As a bonus for that time, he received 10,000 US dollars .
Buddy Lazier passed the refresher program that day and was admitted to the qualification. 32 pilots set a time. Conor Daly did not drive a lap because his vehicle had not been fully repaired after an accident the day before when the rain set in.

The 8th training session for the Indianapolis 500 took place on the Saturday before qualification. Will Power drove the fastest lap ahead of his teammates AJ Allmendinger and Josef Newgarden . Power undercut the fastest training time in Indianapolis set by EJ Viso the day before .
On that day, Katherine Legge was introduced as the third female driver by Schmidt Peterson Motorsports . This increased the field of participants to 34 pilots. Legge did not complete a lap on Saturday.
25 pilots took part in the eighth training session. Conor Daly's operational chassis was made operational again before this training session.
First section (Top 24)
Because of the rain, qualifying started later than planned.
In the first part of qualifying, the first 24 drivers qualified for the Indianapolis 500. The first nine drivers took pole position in a later decisive qualifying. Four flying laps were driven in a row and the total time and average speed were determined. The drivers were individually on the track.
Will Power posted the fastest time in qualifying. With 0: 39.2290 min (229.422 mph) he also drove the fastest lap. In addition to Power, the other two drivers from Team Penske as well as all five drivers from Andretti Autosport and Ed Carpenter , who competed for his own racing team, made it into the second section, in which the pole position was awarded.
Only drivers with Chevrolet engines qualified for the top 9 . The best Honda driver was Alex Tagliani in tenth.
Many drivers tried to get into the top 24 and thus qualify directly. Ryan Briscoe failed the first attempt and dropped out the second. In the third attempt, he made it into the top 24. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing pilots were involved in internal duels. When James Jakes was in 24th place, Graham Rahal tried to score a faster time and oust him. He didn't succeed. Although Jakes later dropped out of the top 24, he managed to get back into the top 24 on his third attempt. Townsend Bell , who also qualified with his third attempt , did a similar job. The 24th place finally went to Simona de Silvestro , who only made two attempts.
Top 9
In the top 9 qualifying, the best time from the previous qualifying was not beaten. Ed Carpenter secured pole position with an average speed of 228.762 mph. It was Carpenter's first pole position in the Indianapolis 500 and his second overall IndyCar pole. Carlos Muñoz came second, Marco Andretti third. Muñoz will start from the front row of the grid in his first IndyCar race. The last rookie to do so at the Indianapolis 500 was Muñoz's compatriot Juan Pablo Montoya , who won from second place in 2000.
The pole sitter received a bonus of 100,000 US dollars , the second $ 50,000 and third $ 40,000.
Carpenter's average lap speeds in detail were 229.347 mph, 228.976 mph, 228.774 mph, and 227.955 mph.

Bump Day (May 19th)
Qualifying
On Bump Day, ten drivers tried to get one of the nine places that were still available. However, the award was not exciting: After nine drivers had successfully completed their first attempt, qualifying was over, as Michel Jourdain jr. renounced an attempt. He failed to qualify.
Jourdain struggled to do a reasonably fast lap and described his vehicle as undrivable. His team, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing , failed to find the cause of the problem with his vehicle. Jourdain tried the setup of his teammates James Jakes and Graham Rahal in training before Bump Day without success. In addition, Graham Rahal drove five laps in the Jourdain vehicle and also did not come close to sufficient speed. With the identical setup in the Jourdain vehicle, he was about 24 mph per lap slower than in his chassis and declared after the attempt that he was already at the limit.

run
report
Ed Carpenter kept the lead at the start ahead of Marco Andretti and EJ Viso . In the fourth lap, JR Hildebrand tried to drive past James Hinchcliffe on the outside lane. Hildebrand lost control of the vehicle and hit the wall with the rear. The accident triggered a yellow phase. Hildebrand was released from his racing team Panther Racing a few days after the accident at the Indianapolis 500 .
At the restart, Carpenter kept the lead. However, he took turns in the next few laps with Andretti and Tony Kanaan at the top. Kanaan started the first pit stop phase on lap 29. During this period, Sebastian Saavedra had an accident that triggered the second yellow phase. A little later Buddy Lazier and Pippa Mann gave up on the pits. Man had previously had contact with the Wall.
After the restart, Carpenter and Andretti once again took turns leading the race. Takuma Satō had worked his way into the top 10 in this racing phase. With a spin in the 56th lap, he triggered the third yellow phase. Satō prevented contact with the wall and did not damage his vehicle. He resumed the race. In this yellow phase, all pilots would pit for a pit stop. Ryan Hunter-Reay took over the lead of the race.
At the next restart, Andretti took the lead again. However, he lost it directly to Hunter-Reay, who also fell back after a short lead. Carpenter first took the lead, then Kanaan and finally Will Power for more than ten laps at a time . Power was also the first driver to make his next pit stop. After all the pilots were in the pits, Kanaan was initially back in front. However, it remained with ongoing overtaking maneuvers in the entire field. AJ Allmendinger finally managed to take the lead halfway through the race. However, he gave it up again due to an unscheduled pit stop and lost some time. Allmendinger's seat belts had come loose and a stop was required.
Kanaan took the lead again and was put under pressure and replaced at the front by Andretti drivers Andretti, Hunter-Reay, Viso and Carlos Muñoz , who finished in the top 5 in this section of the race. After another pit stop under green, Muñoz had fallen behind and Hélio Castroneves was in the top 5 instead.
On the 151st lap, Andretti started the penultimate pit stop phase - again under green. The pit stop window was around 30 laps. This time Viso lost some time in the pits because he stalled his vehicle. In the following laps Hunter-Reay, Andretti, Muñoz, Castroneves, Allmendinger, Kanaan and Carpenter were in front. Since there were no incidents apart from a slight contact with the wall by Alex Tagliani , there was still no yellow phase, so that the last pit stops were carried out under the green flag. At this stage, Sébastien Bourdais gave up. He had damaged his vehicle when entering the pit lane.
In the last twelve laps there was a duel between Hunter-Reay and Kanaan for victory. Behind were Andretti, Muñoz and Justin Wilson . Finally, on the 194th lap, Rahal lost control of his vehicle when entering the back straight and spun. In contrast to Satō, however, he did not succeed in preventing an impact. This triggered a yellow phase. In this, Hunter-Reay was in the lead.
At the restart, Hunter-Reay, Kanaan and Muñoz were roughly level, with Kanaan just leading. As Dario Franchitti lost control of his vehicle shortly after the restart and hit the wall, there was another yellow phase. Since the track could not be cleared in time, the race ended under yellow. For the first time in his tenth participation, Franchitti failed to finish the race in the lead lap.
With that, Kanaan won the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in his career on his twelfth attempt. Previously, no driver had won for the first time after more than ten participations. Canaan is the fourth Brazilian winner after Emerson Fittipaldi , Gil de Ferran and Castroneves. Muñoz was the best rookie in second, ahead of his teammates Hunter-Reay and Andretti. The three Andretti drivers were all disappointed with the race they lost for their team. Wilson was the best Honda driver in fifth . He also drove the first fastest race lap. The top 10 were completed by Castroneves, Allmendinger, Simon Pagenaud , Charlie Kimball and Carpenter. That put seven Chevrolet and three Honda drivers in the top ten positions. Ana Beatriz became the best female pilot in 15th place.
Kanaan received $ 2,353,355 as a winning bonus .
In the drivers' championship, Andretti passed Satō in the lead. Satō was in second place after the Indianapolis 500. Castroneves stayed third.
Several records were set at the Indianapolis 500:
- The shortest Indianapolis 500 with a racing time of 2: 40: 03.4181 hours.
- The highest average speed was achieved with an average of 187.433 mph (301.64 km / h). The old record came from 1990 with 185.981 mph (299.31 km / h).
- Since 1972, the previous average speed has only improved for the fifth time (1972, 1984, 1986 and 1990).
- 68 Change in leadership. The previous record from the previous year was 34 leadership changes.
- 14 pilots who had led the race for at least one lap. The old record was 12 drivers in 1993.
- 26 cars at the finish. This value was also reached in 1911, but seven more vehicles started there.
- The vehicle with the number 11 won for the first time.
- Since the caution phases were recorded (1976), the fewest have been in this race with 21 laps under yellow. In addition, 133 laps were completed in a row under green, which is also a record.
- Scott Dixon (2008-2013) was after Wilbur Shaw (1935-1940) and Roger Ward (1959-1964) the third pilot to complete the Indianapolis 500 for the sixth time in a row.
Comments from the first three drivers
“I did it and can finally put my ugly face on this trophy. I was known for years for losing this race. Now I am known for winning this race. I was very calm. But it was the same with the eleven attempts I made here before. This time when the last six laps were going and I wasn't in the lead, I thought, 'Hey, this could be your day'. I have often been in the situation where I was in the lead at the last restart. Today it was clear to me that I had to get to the top as soon as possible in order to be prepared if there was another yellow card. It's funny. The yellow flag was my best friend today. "
“I really wanted to fight for victory. Maybe I would have won, maybe not. But there is nothing to be ashamed of. Second place is a very strong result for a rookie and maybe I'll get the chance for a sip of milk in the future. Maybe I could have attacked Tony because my car was really strong. But that's racing, you don't know and Tony really did a good job. "
“That was just bad luck. We were ahead at the last restart and I knew they were going to get me. But I wasn't worried because there were still a few laps left for a counterattack. Then the crash came and it was all over. Congratulations to Tony Kanaan, he's a great champion and he totally deserves the win. But at the same time I am really disappointed. "
