The 98th Indianapolis 500 took place on May 25, 2014 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway near Indianapolis , Indiana , United States and was the fifth race of the 2014 IndyCar Series .
background
For the first time the Grand Prix of Indianapolis took place on a street course variant of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway one day before the start of training . After the Indianapolis Grand Prix 2014 , Will Power led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay and six points ahead of Simon Pagenaud .
Six former Indianapolis 500 winners competed with Hélio Castroneves (three times), Jacques Villeneuve , Buddy Lazier , Juan Pablo Montoya , Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan (once each). Lazier was the most experienced pilot with his 23rd participation in the Indianapolis 500. With Mikhail Aleshin , Carlos Huertas , Sage Karam , Kurt Busch , James Davison , Martin Plowman and Jack Hawksworth , seven drivers started the race for the first time. Karam was the youngest competitor at 19 years of age and Lazier the oldest competitor at 46. 34 drivers from twelve nations took part in the event. With eleven drivers, the United States had the largest number of participants.
With Bush for the first time launched a champion of the NASCAR Sprint Cup for the Indianapolis 500. This took first joint a former Formula 1 world champion (Villeneuve), a former Sprint Cup winner (Busch) and former IndyCar champion ( Sebastien Bourdais , Dixon, Hunter-Reay, Kanaan, Lazier, Montoya and Villeneuve) participated in the Indianapolis 500. In addition, winners of the Monaco Grand Prix (Montoya) and the Daytona 24-hour race (Bourdais, Dixon, Charlie Kimball , Montoya, Graham Rahal and Justin Wilson ) were in the starting field.
Pagenaud entered this race with a helmet design that was reminiscent of that of the fatally injured Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton Senna 20 years ago .
Abraham Jacob "AJ" Watson died on May 12th at the age of 90. Watson won the Indianapolis 500 six times as a designer and four times as chief mechanic.
Together with the Pocono IndyCar 500 and the MAVTV 500 , the Indianapolis 500 was part of the Triple Crown . A driver who won all three races would have received an additional $ 1 million award . Double points were awarded for all Triple Crown races.
procedure
The Indianapolis 500, including the training sessions, extended over a period of 15 days. The event started on May 11th with free practice. All newcomers and returnees who had not competed in oval races for a long time had to take part in the rookie and refresher program on April 29 and May 5, respectively . In this program, every rookie and refresher had to do 10 laps at constant speed between 200 and 205 mph and 15 laps at constant speed between 205 and 210 mph on the first day. For the remainder of the practice session, each of these riders had to complete 15 laps at a speed of at least 210 mph. Drivers who were not ready on the first day of training completed the program as soon as they started training. Until May 16, there were six free training days, each with six hours of training time per day. A seventh day of training took place on May 19th.
The two-day qualifying began on May 17th, in which a vehicle and not the driver qualified. Thus, driver changes would have been allowed after qualifying. However, the starting position was tied to the driver, so that pilots would have been placed at the end of the field after a driver change. Qualifying took place in an individual time trial format, in which each driver drove four flying laps. Each driver had at least one try. Further attempts could be started at any time. However, the time previously achieved was then canceled. There were changes to the mode compared to last year. On the very first day, 30 vehicles that were taking part in the race were identified. On the second day, the final starting position was determined in two groups. The first nine drivers and the drivers from 10th to 33rd place drove out their starting positions in the individual time trial. The last three starting places would have been allocated separately if further vehicles had been reported on May 18th. The three vehicles that had occupied places 31, 32 and 33 on the first day, as well as all other vehicles that would not have been registered until May 18, would have been approved for this qualification.
On May 23rd was the so-called Carb-Day with a one-hour free training session. The Indianapolis 500 finally took place on May 25th.
In contrast to all other races, at the Indianapolis 500 every driver who qualifies received points for the qualifying result.
Changes in the starting field
For the Indianapolis 500 there were some changes in the starting field. Eight additional vehicles - compared to the Grand Prix of Indianapolis - were used:
- Schmidt Peterson Motorsports fielded a third vehicle for the former Formula 1 world champion, IndyCar champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Jacques Villeneuve . Villeneuve's last IndyCar race was the 1995 Toyota Grand Prix of Monterey .
- KV Racing Technology deployed a third and fourth vehicle. Townsend Bell and James Davison got the places. Bell last took part in the Indianapolis 500 last year , Davison's last IndyCar race was the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma 2013 . Davison, whose cockpit was partly financed by IndyCar itself, only completed a part-time program for cost reasons and only joined the event during the training week.
- Dale Coyne Racing undertook Pippa Mann for a third vehicle. It was used together with Muscle Milk Pickett Racing . Mann was the only driver in the starting field. Mann was last at the start at the MAVTV 500 2013 .
- Ed Carpenter Racing first appeared as a two-car team. JR Hildebrand received the second car and returned with it to the IndyCar Series. His last job was at the MAVTV 500 in 2013.
- Dreyer and Reinbold - Kingdom Racing returned to the IndyCar Series for the Indianapolis 500 after a year break. Dennis Reinbold's racing team Dreyer & Reinbold was financially supported by Chip Ganassi and Davey Hamilton . Chip Ganassi Racing sponsored Sage Karam , who acted as the operational pilot, this year. It was the first IndyCar race for the reigning Indy Lights champion . Davey Hamilton was involved in the operation under the label Kingdom Racing . Hamilton was therefore involved as co-owners of both a driver with a Chevrolet engine (Karam) and a driver with a Honda engine (Pagenaud).
- Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing fielded a second vehicle for Alex Tagliani . Tagliani last participated in the MAVTV 500. It is used in cooperation with RW Motorsports .
- As in the previous year, Buddy Lazier took part in the event with the family racing team Lazier Partners Racing .
There were also three driver changes:
- Kurt Busch took over the fifth Andretti Autosport vehicle from Franck Montagny . The vehicle was only used in the two Indianapolis races. Busch took part in the Coca-Cola 600 , a sprint cup race in Charlotte , North Carolina , following the Indianapolis 500 . Busch retired from this race and reached 40th place. The last time Robby Gordon contested the two races on Memorial Day weekend was in 2004 . After John Andretti , Tony Stewart and Gordon, Busch is the fourth driver to want to take part in both races. So far, only Stewart has managed to complete both races over the full distance in 2001 and thus cover a total of 1,000 miles .
- Ed Carpenter took over the first car in his racing team from Mike Conway . Conway only competed on the street courses, Carpenter drove the oval races.
- EJ Viso represented James Hinchcliffe at Andretti Autosport until Thursday. Hinchcliffe suffered a concussion at the Indianapolis Grand Prix and was sidelined for a few days.
At the beginning of the training week, several drivers, including Katherine Legge , tried unsuccessfully to make an additional report at short notice.
Registration list
All teams and drivers use the chassis Dallara DW12 with an aero kit from Dallara and tires from Firestone .

- Remarks
- ↑ EJ Viso took over vehicle # 27 from James Hinchcliffe for the first days of training because Hinchcliffe was not ready for use due to a concussion.
- With the exception of vehicles # 33 and # 91, a replacement car was reported.
Refresher and rookie test drives
Before the Grand Prix of Indianapolis was held from May 8th to 10th, two test drives were part of the rookie and refresher program.
Refresher test day (April 29th)
space | driver | team | time | Ø speed |
---|---|---|---|---|

2 | Jacques Villeneuve | Schmidt Peterson Motorsports | 0: 41.3333 | 217.742 mph |
The refresher test day was attended by drivers who had already successfully completed the rookie program, but had never participated in the Indianapolis 500 or had not participated in the Indianapolis 500 for a long time. In 2014 these were Jacques Villeneuve and Kurt Busch . Villeneuve last raced the 1995 Indianapolis 500 - which he won - on the oval course. Busch had already completed sufficiently fast laps on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2013 without having participated in training or racing.
Both refresher passed the test, which consisted of the second and third phases of the Rookie Orientation Program , and thus received approval for training in the Indianapolis 500. Busch was the faster pilot. Due to rain, the test day was canceled 50 minutes before the scheduled end.

With this vehicle (# 20) Carpenter had achieved pole position last year. Since James Hinchcliffe had suffered a concussion at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis the day before , he did not participate in the training. Before he could get back into the car, he had to be fully recovered and pass a medical examination by the racing doctor. EJ Viso took over his vehicle as a representative .
Mikhail Aleshin , Sébastien Bourdais , James Davison , Jack Hawksworth , Carlos Huertas , Buddy Lazier , Pippa Mann , Simon Pagenaud , Sebastián Saavedra and Justin Wilson did not participate. Partly for budget reasons, partly because the vehicles were still being repaired or repainted after the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, which took place the day before.

The drivers were individually on the track. The first qualifying lasted seven hours.
With the exception of Karam, all drivers made their first attempt in the first three hours. After that, qualifying was open to all drivers again, although they had to withdraw their time in order to carry out another attempt. Over the next hour, a few drivers made more attempts and the lap times got faster. About three hours before the end, the session was interrupted for about one lap due to the onset of rain. Kurt Busch left the racetrack at a time when he was still in the top 9, but then fell back to tenth place and did not make it into the top 9 qualifying.

2nd qualifying, 1 to 9
The first nine starting positions were awarded last. Each driver drove four flying laps in a row in the individual time trial. The total time and average speed were determined. Everyone had a try. The order was determined by the result of the first qualifying. The drivers took to the track in reverse order. The individual time trial lasted about 45 minutes. Carpenter revealed after qualifying that his teammate Hildebrand had a share in his pole position, as he changed his attitude after his attempt.
The gap between Carpenter and Buddy Lazier , the slowest, was only 2.1509 seconds. This was the smallest first-to-last gap ever recorded on four fast laps in the Indianapolis 500. The distance between the average speed was 3.147 mph. Only with the Indianapolis 500 1953 the distance was even smaller at 3.310 mph.

run
report
At the start, James Hinchcliffe took over the lead from Ed Carpenter . Ryan Briscoe lightly touched the wall and pitted with a puncture. In doing so, he lost one lap to the leaders. After nine laps Carpenter passed Hinchcliffe and took the lead. Hinchcliffe then drove in the slipstream of Carpenter and thus saved fuel. The pit stop window for this race was around 30 laps under the green flag. The first pit stop phase began on lap 28. One lap later, the leader Carpenter pitted. Due to pit stops, Hinchcliffe, Will Power , Tony Kanaan and Mikhail Aleshin each took the lead for one lap. Hinchcliffe passed Carpenter at the stop and was in the lead after the first few stops in front of Carpenter, Will Power and Hélio Castroneves .
Power initially passed Carpenter over the next few laps and took the lead on lap 37. Carpenter also passed Hinchcliffe three laps after Power. A little later Carpenter's teammate JR Hildebrand took third position and Castroneves and Marco Andretti also overtook Hinchcliffe. Graham Rahal , who had handling problems, gave up at the pits with electronics problems during this phase. On the 58th lap, Andretti took the lead from Power. He stayed in the lead for four laps until his pit stop. Castroneves and Scott Dixon were in the lead for one lap each due to a pit stop, while Juan Pablo Montoya , who stayed out longer like the first stint, for three laps. After the second pit stops, Castroneves led the class ahead of Andretti, Carpenter, Dixon and Power. Kanaan, who had won the previous year, pitted without fuel and pitted again a little later, losing time. Buddy Lazier also retired during this racing phase.
On the 90th lap, the third pit stop phase began under green flags. Castroneves pitted in the 91st round. Carpenter, Dixon and Montoya then took the lead one after the other. Montoya did not stop until the 99th lap and thus had the best chance if the race had stayed under green throughout. After the stops, Hunter-Reay led Castroneves and Andretti. Castroneves took the lead again eight laps later. Another ten laps later, Hunter-Reay took the lead back. Carpenter, however, had fallen far behind due to an early pit stop.
The fourth pit stop phase began on lap 123. Dixon and Montoya took over the lead in the meantime. Montoya stayed outside the longest again. However, he reduced his good chances of winning because he was too fast in the pits. He and his team-mate Power, who made the same mistake, fell back after a drive-through penalty and needed a caution period to catch up. Hunter-Reay led the race for another six laps before his teammate Andretti overtook him.
After 149 laps there was finally the first caution phase after Charlie Kimball had turned into the limit in the second corner. This ended the longest green phase for an Indianapolis 500. All drivers who have not pitted for the fifth time completed their fifth pit stop. Carpenter, who had stopped earlier, took the lead. At the restart, Hunter-Reay went back to first position. A few laps later, Carpenter overtook for one lap before Hunter-Reay took the lead again. On the 168th lap, Dixon lost his vehicle in the fourth corner and triggered the second caution phase. In the turbulence that had developed behind him, Martin Plowman collided with Josef Newgarden, who had already been a few laps back . Newgarden was eliminated. All drivers made their last pit stop during this phase, so they were able to drive through to the end. Alex Tagliani briefly took the lead during this phase due to a later stop.
Immediately after the restart, in which Hunter-Reay kept the lead, there was another yellow phase. Hinchcliffe, Carpenter and Bell try to get three of them through the first corner, with Carpenter and Hinchcliffe colliding. Carpenter saw the guilt for the collision with Hinchcliffe, who in his opinion should have withdrawn. Hinchcliffe, however, was of the opinion that Bell could not stay on the outside and would withdraw. When restarting, Hunter-Reay retains the lead. Andretti went from fourth to second and passed Hunter-Reay a few laps later. Andretti lost the lead shortly afterwards. Castroneves then passed Andretti and Hunter-Reay before being overtaken by Hunter-Reay again after one lap in the lead.
The last ten laps have been eventful. On the 191st lap, the race management decided on a yellow phase, as Sebastián Saavedra had distributed parts on the track after touching Jacques Villeneuve . At the same time, Bell lost control of the vehicle and hit the limit in the second corner. He was unharmed. As the vehicle recovery would take some time, the race management decided to use the red flag to allow a few more laps under green flags. Kanaan gave up in the closing stages with a big deficit. When restarting after the interruption, Hunter-Reay initially remained in the lead, but was overtaken by Castroneves on the inside in the first corner on lap 196. Castroneves did not manage to stay in front, so Hunter-Reay took the lead again one lap later and defended it to the end. Castroneves managed to drive alongside Hunter-Reay during the lap or to overtake him briefly, but at the end of each of these last laps he was behind Hunter-Reay.
Hunter-Reay won the Indianapolis 500 for the first time and was named after Sam Hornish jr. the first US winner since 2006 . Hunter-Reay was the 69th Indianapolis 500 winner and the first from Florida Castroneves was second ahead of Andretti, Carlos Muñoz and Montoya. Kurt Busch , Sébastien Bourdais , Power, Sage Karam and Hildebrand completed the top 10. Busch and Karam thus achieved a place in the top ten in their first IndyCar race. 24 drivers crossed the finish line, 20 of them on the lead lap, which was a new record. With a gap of six hundredths of a second between Hunter-Reay and Castroneves, it was the second closest finish. The Indianapolis 500 2014 was the second fastest in history after the previous year. With 21 laps under yellow flags, it was also the one with the fewest laps under yellow. A total of 6,105 race laps were completed, which is also a new record.
All drivers received a prize for their participation and placement. Hunter-Reay $ 2,491,194, Castroneves $ 758,194, and Andretti $ 585.194. Lazier received the lowest premium at $ 225,305.
In the drivers' championship, Hunter-Reay passed Power in the lead. Castroneves took third place.
