Robby Gordon (born January 2, 1969 in Bellflower , California ) is an American automobile racing driver who mainly competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup .
Life
Robby Gordon drove motorcycles at the age of eight and switched to cars at the age of 16. In total, he has won six championship titles so far , all in so-called off-road races . In his first race he won, beating his father Bob Gordon, who finished second in the race.

It wasn't until 1990 that Robby Gordon switched to on-road racing. He opted for NASCAR ( Sprint Cup , Nationwide Series and Craftsman Truck Series ), Open Wheel (IRL and Indy), but continued to drive off-road races .
Gordon became famous in 1999 when he led the Indy 500 due to a daring pit stop strategy, but rolled out without fuel in the 199th of 200 laps while in the lead. He lost the hoped-for victory to the Swede Kenny Bräck and was only fourth.
In 2005 Gordon went into business for himself and acted as the owner of his racing team "Robby Gordon Motorsports" as a racing driver. In the same year he also took part in the Dakar Rally in a VW Race Touareg and won two stages. He was the first US-American to win a Dakar stage in the automobile category.
In the two subsequent editions of the Dakar Rally he drove a Hummer H3 . In 2006 he had to end the race prematurely with a technical breakdown, in 2007 he achieved another stage win and finished the rally in eighth place. In 2009 he finished the rally in third place, but he did not manage to win a stage. In 2015 he was ranked 19th.
In the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season , Gordon should be deducted 100 points from the championship stand for an unapproved bumper. NASCAR overturned the sentence, but fined it $ 150,000. He finished the season with 2770 points in 33rd place. The 2009 season was also mixed. He only crossed the finish line once in the top 10 and ended the season in 34th place overall.
