Reports
background
After the Firestone 550 , Will Power led the drivers' standings by 36 points over Scott Dixon and 48 points over James Hinchcliffe . Among the engine manufacturers, Chevrolet led with 3 points ahead of Honda and with 26 points ahead of Lotus .
With Dario Franchitti , Tony Kanaan (twice each), Ryan Briscoe and Dixon (once each), four former winners competed in this race. With Ryan Hunter-Reay , a driver who had won the Time Warner Cable Roadrunner 250 , a champ car race on this route, also took part.
training
In the first practice session, Josef Newgarden achieved the fastest lap ahead of Hélio Castroneves and EJ Viso . There was no interruption in training due to a yellow phase. Justin Wilson set the fastest time in the second practice session . Newgarden was second ahead of Castroneves.
Qualifying
The starting grid for the Milwaukee IndyFest was determined by qualifying with an individual time trial mode. Each pilot drove two flying laps in a row and the total time was decisive for the result.
Franchitti posted the fastest time and got pole position after failing to make it into the top 10 in practice. Wilson was second ahead of Hunter-Reay. Rubens Barrichello achieved his best qualifying result in the IndyCar Series with a fifth place.
Due to premature engine changes there were seven penalty transfers on the starting grid. Briscoe, Mike Conway , Dixon, Newgarden, Power, Takuma Satō and Wilson were affected .
run
The start of the Milwaukee IndyFest was postponed by 90 minutes because it had rained and the track had to be dried.
Franchitti initially led the race until lap 63, but then fell back. While Newgarden gave up after 48 laps with technical problems, Simona de Silvestro triggered the first caution on the 66th lap because she had turned in turn four. You dropped out. Viso and Barrichello had recently pitted, which is why Viso took the lead.
After a duel between Ganassi pilots Franchitti and Dixon for fifth place on the 85th lap , with both of them touching slightly, an engine failure at Wilson on the 94th lap on the start-finish straight triggered the second yellow phase out. In this Castroneves fell by the wayside and thus took the lead.
In the 108th lap there were two incidents, both of which triggered a yellow phase. While JR Hildebrand had stopped in turn 3, there was contact between Satō and James Jakes in turn 2 . The trigger for the accident was that Satō had lost control of his car in an attempt to overtake Jakes. Both pilots hit the wall, but were unharmed.
Problems arose during the planned restart because the pilots were not yet properly organized. The restart was carried out one lap later. Dixon, who was now in fourth place, received a drive-through penalty for an alleged jump start and dropped out of the lead lap. After the race, the penalty turned out to be the wrong decision. Dixon did not accelerate too early at the restart, as assumed by the race management, but at the aborted restart. The trigger for the wrong decision were technical problems in the timekeeping, which indicated the wrong lap for this offense. IndyCar race director Beaux Barfield admitted the mistake after the race and apologized to Dixon and his team.
On the 142nd lap, Hunter-Reay finally took the lead and held it until the end of the race. A little later Tony Kanaan also passed Castroneves into second place.
After there was a yellow phase on lap 182 due to moisture in the third corner, an accident by Franchitti triggers another yellow phase on lap 195. Franchitti had previously come to the grass in a duel with Briscoe and had touched Briscoe lightly. A lap later, Franchitti hit the wall at the same point. The trigger was presumably a consequential damage after the collision.
Hunter-Reay eventually won his first race of the 2012 season ahead of Kanaan and his teammate Hinchcliffe. It was also the first win of the season for Andretti Autosport , whose team boss Michael Andretti acted as promoter at this event. Oriol Servià made up 16 places in the race and finished fourth. Viso, Castroneves, Alex Tagliani , Ed Carpenter , Graham Rahal and Barrichello completed the top 10. Carpenter crossed the finish line for the first time this season within the top ten pilots. There was a six-fold win for Chevrolet.
In the drivers' championship, Power, who finished twelfth, kept the lead. Hinchcliffe took second place from Dixon, who finished eleventh. The positions in the manufacturers' championship remained unchanged.
After the event, promoter Michael Andretti announced that the 2013 IndyCar Series would again be racing on the Milwaukee Mile.
