The 2012 Honda Indy Toronto took place on July 8th in the Streets of Toronto in Toronto , Ontario , Canada and was the tenth race of the 2012 IndyCar Series season .
Reports
background
After the Iowa Corn Indy 250 , Will Power led the drivers' standings with 3 points ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay and with 15 points ahead of Scott Dixon . Among the engine manufacturers, Chevrolet led with 9 points ahead of Honda and with 36 points ahead of Lotus .
The so-called push-to-pass button was reintroduced for this Indy . It was used from this race in all non-oval races. The boost pressure of the turbo engines is 1.5 bar from this race. With the push-to-pass button, the pilots can increase the boost pressure of the turbo engines by 0.1 bar for a short period of time.
Lotus started using a new engine from this race weekend. IndyCar previously allowed all manufacturers who were at least 2.5 percent behind the competition in the middle or at the end of the season to improve their engine and have it re-homologated. Lotus modified its engine for this race as well as the races in Sonoma and Baltimore . For this reason, Simona de Silvestro completed tests in Lexington before this race .
Sébastien Bourdais took over the Dragon cockpit from Katherine Legge as planned .
With Dario Franchitti (three times), Power (twice), Bourdais, Justin Wilson and Hunter-Reay (once each), five former winners competed for this Indy.
training
There were two interruptions in the first training session and the training session was extended by 15 minutes. After Josef Newgarden got stuck with fuel pressure problems, the training was interrupted and all pilots drove to the pits. Wilson got stuck in first gear and hit the rear of Bourdais' vehicle. Four mechanics (three from Dragon Racing, one from Dale Coyne Racing ) who were working on the car were injured and hospitalized. No person was seriously injured. All mechanics were discharged from the hospital within a day. The training was interrupted for about 25 minutes. At the end of the practice session, Wilson dodged the spinning Alex Tagliani at Turn 8 and hit the tire wall, causing another interruption. Franchitti was the fastest pilot ahead of his teammates Dixon and Simon Pagenaud .
In the second training session, Franchitti kept the lead. Pagenaud came second, Dixon third. Graham Rahal , Ed Carpenter and Wilson each triggered red phases with accidents in Turn 8. In contrast to the first two training sessions, which took place in dry conditions on Friday, the track on Saturday morning was damp at the beginning of the third training session. After the first half, the track was so dry that slicks were used. The training was interrupted after Newgarden slipped in turn 11 and Hunter-Reay in turn 8. Dixon set the fastest lap ahead of Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud.
Qualifying
The first part of the time training was held in two groups. The six fastest drivers in each group came into the second segment. The remaining starting positions were determined from the result of the first qualifying segment, with the drivers in the first group being assigned the odd positions from 13 and the drivers in the second group the even positions from 14. Pagenaud drove the fastest lap in the first group, while Franchitti was the fastest driver in the second group.
In the second segment of the qualification, the six fastest drivers qualified for the final section. Wilson posted the fastest lap. In the final section, known as the Firestone Fast Six , Franchitti secured the 29th pole position of his career ahead of Power, Wilson, Bourdais, Dixon and Tagliani. In 1997 , Franchitti took his first pole position in the top class of American formula racing on this track, back then in the CART series .
Due to premature engine changes, Tagliani, James Hinchcliffe , James Jakes and Simona de Silvestro were moved ten positions back.
Final training
There was an interruption in the final training session on Sunday morning after de Silvestro collided with a tire that had come out of the boundary. Dixon was the fastest driver ahead of Pagenaud and Mike Conway .
run
At the start of the Honda Indy Toronto, Franchitti maintained the lead. Power lost second place to Wilson. But he managed to overtake Wilson first and Franchitti on the sixth lap and take the lead. Shortly thereafter, Dixon retired with an engine failure and de Silvestro gave up at the pits. Power led Franchitti, Wilson, Bourdais, Hunter-Reay, Pagenaud and Conway in this phase.
The pit stops began on lap 13. Tony Kanaan hit an Oriol Servià tire and received a drive-through penalty after which he was no longer in the top 20. After the duel for eighth place between Charlie Kimball and Rahal almost came to a collision and had lost many positions due to an evasive maneuver, Rahal drove into the wall in the first corner and triggered the first caution phase of the race.
Since the leading drivers had not yet been to the pits at this point, they dropped back into midfield after their stop. Pagenaud took the lead ahead of Hunter-Reay, Kanaan, Wilson and Briscoe. Shortly after the caution phase, Hinchcliffe gave up with an engine problem in the pits. Pagenaud set the pace in the middle third of the race and made his second pit stop on lap 49. He had previously driven 35 laps on one tank of fuel, which is why it was unclear whether he could do without another stop until the end of the race. Hunter-Reay now took over the lead of the race.
During the second stop phase, Power collided with Newgarden. Power hit Newgarden, destroying his front wing and suffering a flat tire on the front left. In order to keep his power on the leading lap, initially only his tires were changed. However, this did not succeed, and Power pitted again, this time to repair the front of the vehicle. In addition to Power, Franchitti, whose first stop did not go well, also dropped out of the lead. On the 67th lap, Wilson finally gave up with engine problems in the pits.
Hunter-Reay now led the race and extended his lead, while Kanaan and Pagenaud, lying behind, saved fuel, thus drove more slowly and held up the other drivers. On the 72nd lap, Kimball, who was in fourth place and didn't have to save fuel, overtook both Pagenaud and Kanaan in the third corner and took second place. Almost at the same time, Newgarden from Briscoe took fifth place. Canaan eventually lost more places and has since dropped back to eleventh place.
On lap 79, Newgarden attacked Pagenaud in the third corner. His maneuver failed and he stopped in front of the tire stacks in this corner. This incident triggered another yellow phase. In this, Pagenaud completed a short splash-and-dash stop in order to have enough fuel for the final laps. Pagenaud was also fined for blocking.
The restart resulted in chaotic conditions. At Turn 1, Conway and Bourdais tried an overtaking maneuver against Kimball. Bourdais had a contact that was a partial trigger for the next yellow phase. In this section of the route Rubens Barrichello also turned in front of Tagliani's vehicle. The second trigger for the next caution phase was a collision between Briscoe and Franchitti in turn 3. Briscoe avoided a vehicle and pushed Franchitti into the wall. Involved in this incident were Pagenaud, Marco Andretti and Carpenter. The route was temporarily blocked at this point.
The race ended under yellow flags. Hunter-Reay won his third race in a row. He became the first American since AJ Allmendinger in the 2006 Champ Car season to succeed. Allmendinger also scored the third victory in Toronto. Kimball finished second with a flawless race and thus achieved his best IndyCar placement ever. Conway was third for the first time on the podium. Kanaan finally crossed the finish line in fourth place ahead of Servià. The top 10 were completed by Hélio Castroneves , JR Hildebrand , Jakes, Takuma Satō and Tagliani. Jakes also achieved the best IndyCar result of his career to date with an eighth place. In addition, Jakes made up the most places in the race with 16 positions.
In the drivers' championship, Hunter-Reay took the lead with a 34-point lead over Power. Hunter-Reay is named after Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006 the first American to lead the IndyCar Series. Castroneves took third place. The positions of the manufacturers remained unchanged.
After the race, the Conway vehicle was found to have too large a tank. AJ Foyt Enterprises was fined $ 15,000 and 10 points were deducted from the team. Conway was not affected by the sentence.
