Alexander Rossi (born September 25, 1991 in Auburn ) is an American automobile racing driver . He competed in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2011 and 2012 . From 2013 to 2015 he started in the GP2 series and reached second place overall in 2015. In 2015 he also took part in Formula 1 races. He has been racing in the IndyCar Series since 2016, where he won the Indianapolis 500 on his debut .

Career

After Rossi his career in karting had begun, he moved in 2005 to the single-seater racing in the Skip Barber Western Regional Series , which he won a year later, with eight wins in twelve races. He also finished third in the national Skip Barber Championship and seventh in the Formula TR Pro Series FR 1600 . In 2007 he switched to Formula BMW USA. After finishing third in his debut season, he won the league title a year later. He won ten out of 15 races. With his championship title he qualified for the Formula BMW World Final, which he won ahead of Michael Christensen and Esteban Gutiérrez .

In 2009 Rossi moved to Europe in the international Formula Master . With three victories, he finished fourth overall at the end of the season. In December, Rossi completed a Formula 1 test day in the BMW Sauber as a reward for his victory at the Formula BMW World Finals . In the 2009/2010 season of the GP2 Asia series , Rossi initially received a cockpit at Ocean Racing Technology . After just one racing weekend, he switched to the Malaysian Meritus team. In the overall standings, he finally finished ninth overall.

Rossi for Fortec in the Formula Renault 3.5 at the Nürburgring 2011

Following his involvement in the GP2 Asia series, Rossi competed in the GP3 series for ART Grand Prix in 2010 . With two wins, he finished fourth overall. He also took part in the prestigious race in Monte Carlo in the Formula Renault 3.5 .

In 2011 Rossi started for Fortec Motorsport in the Formula Renault 3.5. Rossi started the season with a win at the season opener in Alcañiz . At Silverstone Rossi first came in second in both races, but was then disqualified for the second race because his team had used irregular wheel nuts. With a total of two wins and six podium finishes, he finished the season in third place in the drivers' standings. Within the team, he prevailed against César Ramos with 156 to 47 points . At the end of the year Rossi took the Caterham Team AirAsia in GP2 Final in 2011 in part and finished tenth. He then completed a Formula 1 test for Lotus , Caterham's Formula 1 team. In 2012 Rossi contested his second season in Formula Renault 3.5 for Arden Caterham Motorsport . While he was superior to his first teammate Lewis Williamson , he was clearly defeated by his successor António Félix da Costa with 63 to 166 points. With a third place as the best placement, Rossi finished eleventh in the drivers' standings. In addition, he was a test driver for the Formula 1 team Caterham and in this role also took part in free practice sessions in Formula 1.

Rossi at the 2015 USA Grand Prix

In 2013 Rossi joined the current championship with Caterham for the second race weekend of the GP2 series . In his first race in as-Sachir he was third on the podium. He repeated this result at the main race in Spa-Francorchamps . In the sprint race in Monza , he finished second. At the last event of the season at the Yas Marina Circuit , Rossi scored his first GP2 victory in the main race. He finished the season in ninth place overall. With 92 to 3 points, he clearly prevailed against his teammate Sergio Canamasas . In addition, Rossi remained the team’s Formula 1 test driver. In this role he took part in free practice at the Canadian and US Grand Prix . He also made his debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2013 and competed for Greaves Motorsport in the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours . In 2014 Rossi contested his second GP2 season for Caterham and also remained a Caterham Formula 1 test driver. After the Formula 1 team was sold by Caterham in July, Rossi left the team in both series. Rossi came to his Caterham engagements through his connection to Tony Fernandes . In the GP2 series, he then joined Campos Racing for a weekend after regular driver Kimiya Satō had dropped out due to other commitments. At the end of the season he finished 21st overall. Rossi Marussia joined in Formula 1 and became a test and reserve driver for the racing team. In this role, Rossi was to represent Max Chilton at the Belgian Grand Prix after his participation had been canceled for contractual reasons. However, during the first free practice, which Rossi contested, the team announced that Chilton would drive and take over the cockpit from the second free practice. After the second regular Marussia driver Jules Bianchi had a serious accident in Japan , Rossi was registered for the Russian Grand Prix as a replacement for Bianchi. Marussia withdrew Rossi's report before the first free practice session. After the race, Marussia filed for bankruptcy and did not participate in the next race. Rossi also completed a long-distance race in the United SportsCar Championship in 2014 .

In 2015 Rossi returned to the GP2 series and started for Racing Engineering . He won the sprint race in Spa-Francorchamps and the main races in Monza and Sochi . He finished second overall and was defeated by the master Stoffel Vandoorne with 181.5 to 341.5 points. Rossi also took part in five Formula 1 races for the Manor Marussia F1 Team in 2015 . Based on Herbie, he chose # 53 as his fixed starting number. With five appearances in the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship, Rossi would have qualified for the 2016 super license if he hadn't finished second in GP2.

Rossi after winning the 2016 Indy 500

In 2016 Rossi returned to North America and switched to the IndyCar Series . He received the vehicle from Andretti Autosport , which was looked after by Bryan Herta . There he won the Indianapolis 500 as the first rookie since Hélio Castroneves' victory in 2001. He finished the season one position behind his team-mate Carlos Muñoz in eleventh place overall, making him the best rookie . In addition, Rossi was a substitute driver at Manor in the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship . In 2017 Rossi stayed with Andretti in the IndyCar Series. He finished the season with a win at Watkins Glen in seventh place. At the start of the 2018 season in St. Petersburg, Rossi caused a controversy. At the last restart with two laps to go, Rossi tried to overtake the leading Robert Wickens . There was a collision and Wickens turned into the lane boundary. Rossi still finished the race in third place, while Wickens was eliminated on his IndyCar debut. In the course of the season he took three wins and went into the last race of the season in Sonoma with title chances. There he had to admit defeat to Scott Dixon and took the runner-up title. In 2019 , Rossi fought for the title until the last race. In the end he finished third in the annual standings behind Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud .
