The Marussia MR03 was the fifth Formula 1 - racing cars of the Marussia F1 Team . The vehicle was used in the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship . It was presented on January 30, 2014 at the Circuito de Jerez . Due to the bankruptcy of the Marussia team in October 2014, the team did not participate in the last three races of the season. After the team was rescued at short notice, the MR03 with security updates was also used in the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship .
Technology and development
The MR03 was the successor model of the MR02 , although the vehicle differed significantly from the previous model, both visually and technically due to rule changes for the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .
Due to the rule changes for the 2014 season, the nose of the vehicle was lower than that of the vehicle from the previous year. The same applies to the slightly lower nose of the modified version of the vehicle from 2015.
After Cosworth's exit , the team gets the engines from Ferrari . The MR03 was powered by the newly developed Ferrari 059/3 , a 1.6-liter V6 engine with a turbocharger . This engine was also used in 2015, but it no longer corresponded to the current technical status. Due to the regulations, there was only one central exhaust pipe that was above the rear light. Both the ERS and the eight-speed gearbox came from the engine manufacturer Ferrari.
The tires came from the standard equipment supplier Pirelli , the wheels were made by BBS .
After the team's original plan was to build a completely new car for the 2015 season and use it in the second half of the season, the decision was made after the first races to end the season with the MR03 and gradually develop several updates . At the British Grand Prix , the vehicle was equipped with a new underbody and new trim parts at the rear. These parts were originally intended to be used at the end of the 2014 season.
Painting and sponsorship
In 2014, like the previous model, the racing car was mainly black and red, separated by a white stripe. In the course of 2014 there were no larger sponsor stickers on the vehicle.
For the 2015 season, the car was painted red and white, sponsor stickers were not on the car at the beginning of the season. During the season, Airbnb , Erreà and the Flex Box Group were announced as sponsors and their company logos were placed on the vehicle. At the team’s home race in Great Britain , the names of all the team’s employees were also written on the side of the monocoque.
2014 season
Marussia contested the 2014 season again with the driver duo Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton . Bianchi managed to achieve World Championship points in Monaco with ninth place for the first time in the history of the team. After Bianchi was seriously injured in an accident at the Japanese Grand Prix , Alexander Rossi was named as the driver in the subsequent race in Russia , but the nomination was withdrawn shortly before the race weekend. Bianchi died of his injuries nine months later.
2015 season
In the 2015 season, Will Stevens was hired as a driver for the entire season. The team hired the Spanish debutant Roberto Merhi as the second driver . His contract was initially only valid for the first races. Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix , the team announced that Merhi had been replaced by Alexander Rossi in five of the last seven races of the season . Merhi only contested the two races in Russia and Abu Dhabi , as Rossi was unable to participate due to scheduling conflicts with the GP2 series , which he contested in the Racing Engineering team .
