The Williams FW36 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of Williams Martini Racing for the Formula 1 2014 season . An illustration of the car was published on Twitter on January 23, 2014, and the car was first seen on January 28, 2014 at the Circuito de Jerez .

Technology and development

The nose of the Williams FW36 at the Australian Grand Prix

The FW36 was the successor to the FW35 , although the vehicle differed significantly from the previous model, both visually and technically due to rule changes for the 2014 Formula 1 season .

Williams changed the engine manufacturer for the 2014 season. The FW36 was powered by the newly developed Mercedes-Benz PU106A Hybrid , a 1.6-liter V6 engine with a turbocharger . While the ERS comes from the engine manufacturer Mercedes , the eight-speed transmission was an in-house development by Williams. Due to the regulations, there was only one central exhaust pipe that was above the rear light.

Due to the rule changes for the 2014 season, the nose of the vehicle was significantly lower than that of the vehicle from the previous year. The nose tapered sharply at the level of the front wing and protruded far forward beyond the wing.

Painting and sponsorship

The Williams FW36 was painted completely dark blue both in the first published illustration and in the first test drives before the season in Jerez. Only a few sponsor stickers from Randstad , Wihuri , Experian and Pirelli, all white and relatively small, were present on the vehicle. With this paint scheme, Williams also contested the test drives before the season.

On March 6, 2014 Williams presented the paintwork of the vehicle in London. The basic color of the vehicle is white, with stripes based on the logo of the new main sponsor Martini in different shades of blue with a slightly broad red central stripe, which run from the front wing attachment to the engine cover. The Martini logo was also attached to the rear wing, otherwise the front and rear wings were painted black.

driver

Valtteri Bottas stayed with Williams and played his second season for the team. His new team-mate was Felipe Massa , who previously drove for Ferrari and who joined the team as the successor to Pastor Maldonado .

2014 season

The FW36 proved to be an extremely competitive vehicle, with which the pilots scored points in every round of the World Championship and achieved nine podium positions in the process. Massa achieved the only pole position of the season for Williams at the Austrian Grand Prix . Behind Mercedes and Red Bull, the team achieved third place in the constructors' championship with a clear lead over Ferrari. This was Williams' best ranking since 2003 . The drivers finished fourth (Bottas) and seven (Massa) in the drivers' world championship.
