The Marion Dufresne is a French research and supply ship. It is named after the French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne (1724–1772) and serves to supply the French Southern and Antarctic Regions (TAAF) as well as marine research. In 1995 she replaced a ship of the same name with the same function.

General

The ship has been operated by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs since 2017 , after CMA CGM was previously responsible for ship operations. The ship is available to the TAAF and the French Polar Institute Paul Emile Victor (IPEV). 120 days a year it has to be available to supply the stations on the islands of Kerguelen , Crozet , Amsterdam and the Îles Éparses , the rest of the time it is used as a research ship. The Marion Dufresne is stationed on the island of Réunion .

The ship is adapted to the rough weather conditions of the southern seas ( roaring forties ) and has excellent stability in heavy seas. Due to its secondary role as a supplier, it is unusually large for a research ship and can therefore take a large number of scientists on board and stay at sea for a long time.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . The power for the drive motors is generated by two eight - cylinder four - stroke diesel engines . The motors drive two generators with an output of 2880 kW (3600  kVA apparent power ) and one generator with an output of 2400 kW (3000 kVA apparent power). The electric drive motors, each with 3,000  kW power act on two fixed propeller . An emergency generator with an output of 300 kW (375 kVA apparent power) is also available.
