Îles Éparses
Îles Éparses - in the official French name: Îles Éparses de l'océan India ( German "Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean" ) - those French possessions in the Indian Ocean that were not assigned to any overseas local authority until 2007 are called. These are all small islands that are uninhabited apart from a few scientists and military personnel.
The islands have been administered by the Prefect and Chief Administrator of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands since 2005 . Before that, they had been administered by the prefect of the overseas department of Réunion since 1960 , without actually belonging to Réunion - and thus to the European Union . By law of February 21, 2007, the Îles Éparses were incorporated into the French Southern and Antarctic Territories as the fifth district.
