The Williams FW18 is the 14th Formula 1 - racing cars of Williams F1 . It was used in the 1996 Formula 1 season , the engines were supplied by Renault as in the previous year . Adrian Newey and Patrick Head were responsible for the design. Damon Hill won his first and only world title with the FW18 . Williams was able to secure the constructors' championship for the eighth time.

driver

Damon Hill, last season's runner-up, played his fourth and final season for Williams in 1996 before joining Arrows for the 1997 season. Jacques Villeneuve, who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1995 and was champion in the IndyCar World Series , was signed by Frank Williams as a replacement for David Coulthard , who switched to McLaren . Jean-Christophe Boullion , who started as a regular driver for Sauber Motorsport in the 1995 season , was hired as a test and reserve driver.

technology

The FW18 was developed under the direction of Adrian Newey and Patrick Head . The racing car was powered by a Renault V10 engine with a capacity of 3000 cm 3 . The transmission was a Williams own design. The fuel was supplied by Elf , the tires were purchased from Goodyear . Carbon disc brakes were purchased from AP Racing .

Races

The Williams FW18 was the most reliable Formula 1 racing car of the season. Of the 2028 possible laps, it was possible to finish 1778 - more than any other car. In the entire season you only had to accept 4 technical failures. You were competitive in all races of the season. At every race of the season, except Monaco and Italy , at least one Williams driver was on the podium. You could even win 12 of the 16 races of the season. Damon Hill started every race of the season (16) from the front row, so he drew level with Ayrton Senna ( 1989 ) and Alain Prost ( 1993 ).

After the season opener in Australia , Damon Hill led the World Cup and did not give up this leadership for the entire season. Jacques Villeneuve was runner-up in Formula 1 in his first year . Williams won the constructors' championship with a 105 point lead over the second-placed Ferrari team .
