Introductory lap of the GP Monaco 1996

The 1996 Formula 1 World Championship was the 47th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 16 races between March 10, 1996 and October 13, 1996. Damon Hill won the Drivers' Championship for the first and only time. Williams-Renault became constructors' world champions for the 8th time.

Changes in 1996

Regulations

The technical regulations stipulated further measures to protect drivers. This time the cockpit walls were raised further. In addition, the end plates of the front wing were restricted to a maximum thickness of 10 mm in order to limit possible tire damage in the event of a collision.

There were also innovations in the sporting regulations. Mainly the race qualification was changed: After qualifying rounds had taken place on Friday (or Thursday at the Monaco Grand Prix ) and Saturday of the race weekend in previous years , this was now limited to an exclusive Saturday qualification. For this, an additional free training took place every Friday. In addition, the 107 percent rule has now been introduced, which resulted in non-qualification for vehicles that had required more than 107% of the pole time as the best result of the qualification. This rule was u. a. introduced after the vehicles of the Forti team had been in some cases significantly slower than the rest of the field in the previous year and there were therefore numerous risky lapping maneuvers.

Uniform safety cars and medical cars have now also been introduced for all races .

stretch

The Pacific Grand Prix did not take place again after two editions, so the number of season races was reduced to 16. Otherwise, the racing calendar was partly changed: The Australian Grand Prix took place at the end of the season, now at the beginning. In addition, this race moved to the also temporary Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne for the first time after ten years on the Adelaide Street Circuit . In addition, the European Grand Prix , which took place again at the Nürburgring , moved to spring and thus represented the first race of the “European” season. The Monaco Grand Prix and the Spanish Grand Prix also swapped positions.

Teams

Pacific Grand Prix did not start again in 1996 after two seasons, after Simtek had already ceased operations after six races in the 1995 season. The field of participants in Formula 1 thus shrank to just 22 vehicles in 1996.

Engines

There were no changes at the engine suppliers. However, Ford launched its first V10 engine with its partner team, the Sauber, with the Cosworth JD . Even Ferrari walked this path and adopted in 1996 by the final characteristic previously for this team Twelve cylinders.

driver

The driver policy of Ferrari caused a sensation, which signed the reigning double world champion Michael Schumacher from Benetton and also occupied the second cockpit with the former Jordan driver Eddie Irvine . In return, the previous Ferrari driver pairing of Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi switched to Benetton together. Jordan, in turn, had the second car next to Rubens Barrichello driven by the previous Ligier driver Martin Brundle . He was replaced by the Brazilian paydriver Pedro Diniz , who made his debut at Forti the previous year. That team finally reorganized itself this season with Luca Badoer , who was active for Minardi last year, and the former Pacific driver Andrea Montermini .

Johnny Herbert , the other Benetton driver in 1995, switched to Sauber for 1996 and became Heinz-Harald Frentzen's team-mate . Jean-Christophe Boullion and Karl Wendlinger , who alternated driving for Sauber in 1995, no longer competed in Formula 1. Minardi continued to compete with the Portuguese Pedro Lamy , the second cockpit was shared successively by the debutants Giancarlo Fisichella , Tarso Marques and Giovanni Lavaggi . The driver pairing at Footwork was completely new , where the former Benetton and Simtek driver Jos Verstappen met newcomer Ricardo Rosset .

Also caused a stir Williams that the CART -Master last year Jacques Villeneuve had to take. David Coulthard , Williams' second driver alongside two-time vice world champion Damon Hill , then moved to McLaren . Mark Blundell and Nigel Mansell , who had competed with Mika Häkkinen at McLaren last year , now left Formula 1. The pairing of Häkkinen and Coulthard turned out to be successful and lasted until 2001.

Only Tyrrell did not change the line-up .

5 Mika Hakkinen McLaren - Mercedes +1: 35.071
6th Mika Salo Tyrrell - Yamaha + 1 lap

Jacques Villeneuve surprised in his first race and achieved pole position straight away. On the other hand, the newly introduced 107 percent rule applied immediately to both Fortis: Neither Luca Badoer nor Andrea Montermini achieved a lap time sufficient to qualify for the race.

The race itself had to be stopped after the first start when Martin Brundle's car overturned violently as a result of a collision with Johnny Herbert , whereby Brundle luckily remained unharmed. After the restart, Villeneuve stayed in the lead for a long time. A loss of oil, however, slowed the Canadian, let him fall behind Damon Hill and thus prevented a victory in Villeneuve's racing debut.
