The Monaco Grand Prix 1996 was held on 19 May at the Circuit de Monaco in Monaco instead and was the sixth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1996 .
Reports
background
After the San Marino Grand Prix , Damon Hill led the drivers' standings with 21 points ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and 27 points ahead of Michael Schumacher . Williams-Renault led the constructors' championship with 40 points ahead of Ferrari and 47 points ahead of Benetton-Renault .
With Schumacher (twice) a former winner competed in this Grand Prix.
David Coulthard had to borrow a helmet from Schumacher for this race, as his own had soaked up with water during the warm-up. Schumacher rode in the same helmet at the Brazilian Grand Prix and finished third.
training
In Thursday's free practice session, Mika Häkkinen set the fastest lap ahead of Hill and his team-mate David Coulthard . In Saturday's free practice, Hill took the lead in front of Coulthard and Schumacher.
Qualifying
As in the previous race, Ferrari driver Schumacher secured pole position . Hill and Jean Alesi started the race from places two and three . It was a controversial situation between Gerhard Berger , who was on his fast lap, and Schumacher, ran aground as Berger after the tunnel on the slow-moving Schumacher. Berger turned and backed into the chicane.
Warm up
In the warm-up on Sunday morning, Olivier Panis achieved the best lap time ahead of Häkkinen and Schumacher. Andrea Montermini had an accident in which he damaged his Forti-Ford so badly that he could not compete.
After it had rained on Sunday lunchtime, additional training was held in wet conditions before the race, with Häkkinen taking the lead ahead of Alesi and Rubens Barrichello .
run
After Montermini was unable to take part in the race due to an accident in the warm-up and a lack of a replacement car, 21 pilots started the Monaco Grand Prix. Hill started better than Schumacher and was able to take the lead in the Sainte Devote . The race was already over for three other drivers in the first corner: Jos Verstappen , who had started on slicks, slipped straight into the wall and both Minardi- Ford drivers clashed at the first corner and were eliminated. While Hill drove ahead, Schumacher lost control of his Ferrari after the hairpin and retired. Barrichello spun in the Rascasse , for whom the race was over. After Ukyō Katayama and Ricardo Rosset had also retired due to an accident and Pedro Diniz with a transmission problem, only 13 pilots drove after five laps. At the top, a significant gap opened between the leaders and fourth-placed Eddie Irvine , behind whom a line of eight cars formed. Berger had to retire on the tenth lap due to transmission problems and Heinz-Harald Frentzen fell back to second from last place in front of Luca Badoer after damaging his front wing in an attack on Irvine .
After Martin Brundle was eliminated with a spin on lap 31 , half of all drivers were out of the race. Three laps later, after an attack by Panis, Irvine lost control of his vehicle and got stuck. With the help of the marshals, the Briton, who had already loosened his seat belt, was able to resume the race. In the meantime, Hill had lost the lead to Alesi briefly after a pit stop where he switched to dry tires. One lap later he was able to overtake the Frenchman and take the lead again. After Alesi, who was still on rain tires, had also made a pit stop, Hill managed to extend his lead to around 30 seconds. However, his race was over on lap 40 as he had to retire for the first time this season due to a transmission fault at the exit of the tunnel. Alesi, who had previously finished in second place, took the lead and held it for 20 laps until he had to retire with a damaged suspension. His compatriot Panis took over the lead. Badoer, who had already lapped a few laps, collided in the Mirabeau with Jacques Villeneuve , who wanted to lap the Italian. For the Canadian, the race was over immediately. Badoer was initially able to continue driving, but then had to park his car with electronic problems. After the race, Badoer was banned for two races.
Panis led the race with a slight margin over Coulthard. At that point there were only seven pilots left in the race. Irvine saw an eventful race that came to an end after turning at the point where his team-mate Schumacher had driven into the wall. To go back on the track while trying he met Mika Salo , who had previously been hit by Hakkinen. All three drivers retired, but were classified as they had completed enough laps. Frentzen, who was in third place, collided with his team mate Johnny Herbert on the penultimate lap and had to give up the race in fourth place in the pits. The race did not go the full distance of 78 laps, but was flagged on the 75th lap after the 2-hour time limit had been reached. With Panis, Coulthard and Herbert only three pilots reached the finish. A total of seven pilots were rated.
The race went down in history as the race with the fewest pilots to reach the finish. Panis won the first and - as it turned out - only Grand Prix of his career in a Ligier JS43 . It was also the last victory for the team, which was run as the Prost Grand Prix from the following year .
