The 1967 Monaco Grand Prix took place in Monaco on May 7 and was the second race of the 1967 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
The second World Cup round of the year took place around five months after the season opener in South Africa . In the meantime, two Formula 1 races that were not part of the World Championship had been held, which had produced two exceptional winners: Dan Gurney in an Eagle and Mike Parkes in a Ferrari .
19 drivers were registered for the Monaco Grand Prix, of which only the 16 fastest drivers were allowed to take part in the race due to safety regulations on the comparatively narrow course.
training
Reigning world champion Jack Brabham secured pole position alongside Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini . They were followed by John Surtees on a Honda and Denis Hulme in the second factory Brabham . Lotus -Pilot Jim Clark formed together with the BRM of Jackie Stewart the third row.
The Cooper , privately used by Rob Walker and driven by Jo Siffert , achieved a better starting position than the two works cars.
run
While Bandini took the lead, Brabham's engine burst after a few meters. The Australian spun in a bunch of several competitors, although only Siffert's car was slightly damaged. The Swiss then had to stop repairs on the pits.
Clark dropped to the bottom of the field on the second lap while Hulme and Stewart overtook Bandini and took the lead. Stewart took the lead on lap six, before relinquishing this position to Hulme on lap 14 due to a gearbox failure.
After Surtees retired due to an engine problem, the order at the top remained constant for several laps. Hulme led in front of Bandini and Bruce McLaren . Clark had meanwhile worked his way up to fourth place, but then had to give up due to a technical defect and leave Chris Amon fourth.
While Bandini was catching up on leading Hulme, McLaren had to make a pit stop and dropped back to fifth. On lap 82, Bandini lost control of his car in the harbor chicane. This caught fire and overturned. Bandini could not escape on his own. After the fire was put out, he was rescued and taken to the hospital.
In the end, Hulme won unchallenged ahead of Graham Hill and Chris Amon , who had a puncture on one of the last laps that cost him second place.
Some of the Formula 1 drivers traveled to the United States immediately after the race to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 .
Lorenzo Bandini died in hospital on Wednesday after the race as a result of his accident.
