David de Rothschild (in full David René James de Rothschild , born December 15, 1942 in New York City ) is a French banker and member of the Rothschild family . He is Chairman of Rothschilds Continuation Holdings and Bank Rothschild & Co. , London, and has been Chairman of the Governing Board of the World Jewish Congress since March 2013 .

Life

David de Rothschild is the son of Guy de Rothschild and his first wife Baroness Alix Hermine Jeannette Schey de Koromla . He was born in the United States after his parents fled the Nazis. After the liberation of France, the family returned to their homeland. David de Rothschild is a descendant of James de Rothschild , the founder of the French branch, who had been in the bank's business since 1812, the year his father Mayer Amschel Rothschild , founder of the bank in Frankfurt am Main, died.

Rothschild studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . After completing his studies, he worked for the family-owned Société miniére et métallurgique de Peñarroya from 1966 and then switched to the Rothschild Bank . 1977–1995 he was mayor of the municipality of Pont-l'Évêque in Normandy.

After the bank was nationalized in 1981 by the French government of François Mitterrand , Rothschild stayed for a few years before founding the investment bank Rotschild & Cie in France in 1986 . When David de Rothschild took over the British bank NM Rothschild & Sons in 2003 and assumed its chairmanship, he combined the British and French branches of the bank under his chairmanship. In 2007, the English branch of the Rothschild family finally sold all shares in the Rothschild group to the French branch. Since 2008, Rothschild has been CEO of NM Rothschild & Sons , CEO of Rothschild Continuation Holdings , Deputy Chairman of the Board of Rothschild Bank AG , Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Rothschild & Co. (formerly Paris Orleans ), co-owner of Rothschild & Cie , and member of the Supervisory Board of Compagnie Financiere Saint-Honoré , the Compagnie Financiere Martin Maurel , the De Beers Group and the Groupe Casino .

He was awarded the “ European Banker of the Year 2011” award in Frankfurt. Also in 2011 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

David de Rothschild owns shares in the Château Lafite-Rothschild winery .

David de Rothschild has been President of the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah since 2007 .

Personal

David de Rothschild has been married to Olimpia Anna Aldobrandini since 1974. The couple have two daughters of their own, a son and an adopted daughter. The family lives at Château Reux in Normandy.
