The 2013 Monaco Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2013 ) took place on May 26th at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo and was the sixth race of the 2013 Formula 1 World Championship .

After the Spanish Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 4 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and 17 points ahead of Fernando Alonso . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 14 points ahead of Ferrari and 20 points ahead of Lotus-Renault .

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Alonso, Mark Webber (twice each), Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton , Jenson Button and Vettel (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Christian Calmes (MON), Tom Kristensen (DEN) and Lars Österlind (SWE).

On the race weekend it became known that Ferrari and Mercedes had completed test drives for Pirelli at the Circuit de Catalunya after the last race . While Ferrari competed according to the rules with Pedro de la Rosa and a two-year-old model, Mercedes tested the current Formula 1 car and two regular drivers who wore anonymous helmets. Mostly, prototypes of the mixtures were tested for 2014. After the forbidden test drives with a current vehicle became known, Ferrari and Red Bull appealed the ranking of the Grand Prix. An FIA tribunal issued a warning against Mercedes and Pirelli and excluded Mercedes from the so-called Young Driver Days . The race result remained.

training

The first day of training in Monaco traditionally took place on Thursday. No driver set a lap time in the first half hour. Then there was a lot of activity on the route. Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap ahead of Alonso and Romain Grosjean . In the second training session, Rosberg stayed ahead. His Mercedes team-mate Hamilton took second place. Alonso finished third. Vettel refrained from using KERS in this training . Grosjean destroyed the left front suspension in an accident in the Sainte Devote . An unpaved curb in the Piscine section caused a break with red flags .

There were three accidents in the third free practice session. Felipe Massa drove into the barriers of the Sainte Devote after a technical defect . The accident triggered a yellow flag. The gearbox was so badly damaged in the accident that it had to be replaced. Shortly after training resumed, Adrian Sutil hit the Massenet . The vehicle was recovered under yellow. Shortly before the end of the training, Grosjean also had an accident in the Sainte Devote . Due to the accident, the training was canceled. Rosberg was again the fastest ahead of Grosjean and Vettel.

Qualifying

At the beginning of qualifying the track was wet, so the drivers used intermediates. Shortly after the start, Jules Bianchi stopped in front of the Massenet with a technical problem . Massa did not set any time. So Bianchi and Massa failed to qualify. Both were subsequently allowed to take part in the race. Pastor Maldonado posted the fastest lap. Max Chilton , Esteban Gutiérrez , Charles Pic and Paul di Resta left. In the second part, the track dried up, so that the drivers ended up using slicks. Vettel was the fastest. The Williams pilots as well as Giedo van der Garde , Grosjean, Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated. In the final section, the pilots stayed on dry tires. Rosberg was the fastest and achieved his third pole position in a row ahead of his team-mates Hamilton and Vettel.

After qualifying, Chilton and Massa were moved five positions back due to premature gear changes.

run

Nico Rosberg in the Massenet

At the start of the warm-up lap, Bianchi stopped. He was pushed into the pits and started racing from there. After the start, Rosberg kept the lead in front of his teammates Hamilton and Vettel. Maldonado and van der Garde pitted for a front wing change after the first lap, after they had touched. Before the Nouvelle Chicane, Button dodged into the emergency exit so as not to collide with his teammate Sergio Pérez . He then complained about his teammate over the radio. At the top, Rosberg set himself apart from Hamilton. The gaps in the top group hardly changed in the initial phase. The Mercedes drivers had tire problems again, but due to the lack of overtaking opportunities, they were not in trouble.

On the eighth lap, Pic parked his vehicle, which had caught fire, at the exit of the pit lane. The vehicle was cleared under yellow flags and removed from the track without the safety car coming onto the track. A little later Button went past Pérez to seventh position.

The pit stops began on lap 21, with the top 4 drivers initially remaining on the track. At this stage, Maldonado hit Chilton in the Nouvelle Chicane . Both drove on. After Massa had an accident on lap 29 at Sainte Devote, as in practice, the safety car hit the track. Like his team-mate Webber, Vettel had already pitted, the Mercedes drivers stayed on the track for one more lap. The safety car drove onto the track directly behind the leading duo and stopped the Red Bull drivers briefly. Those seconds allowed Rosberg to keep the lead. Hamilton fell behind Vettel and Webber. Massa's Ferrari was already safe before the safety car phase. The safety car phase was necessary because Massa was examined by a doctor. He was uninjured but was taken to the hospital for a routine check-up. In addition to the rescue of Massa, the safety car phase lasted until lap 39, as van der Garde was allowed to lap back and was allowed to catch up on the field.

At the restart the positions remained unchanged. Rosberg kept the lead. On the 42nd lap, Pérez passed Button in the Nouvelle Chicane . A few laps later he tried a similar maneuver against Alonso, but failed because Alonso took a short cut. Alonso was instructed shortly thereafter to let Pérez pass again to avoid punishment. On the 46th lap, the race was interrupted after a collision between Chilton, Maldonaldo and Bianchi in the Tabac . Chilton had pushed Maldonado against the guardrail. Chilton and Bianchi drove on. Maldonado was eliminated in the accident, but was uninjured. Chilton was given a drive-through penalty. During the interruption of the race, the damaged track barriers were replaced. All teams were allowed to work on the vehicle and change tires during the break.

The race was finally restarted behind the safety car. After one lap it was released again. As with the previous restart, there were no direct changes in position. In the following laps, Sutil passed Button and Alonso. Raikkonen overtook Pérez in the Nouvelle Chicane and then cursed on the radio about Pérez behavior that Raikkonen found unsporting.

Bianchi had an accident in the Sainte Devote on lap 60 . The car was recovered without using the safety car. Two laps later, there was another accident that triggered another safety car phase. Grosjean had hit Ricciardo from behind in the Nouvelle Chicane . While Grosjean initially pitted, Ricciardo was eliminated directly. Grosjean gave up after another lap.

At the restart there were again no direct changes in position. Rosberg again moved away from the rest of the field for about a second. On the 69th lap there was a collision between Raikkonen and Pérez in Nouvelle Chicane . Raikkonen went straight to the pits for a repair stop. Pérez fell by the wayside for a few more laps before giving up. When he parked his vehicle, he almost collided with his teammate Button, who had passed Alonso in the meantime.

Rosberg finally won for the first time of the season. He won the Monaco Grand Prix 30 years after his father Keke Rosberg was victorious in 1983 . Vettel and Webber followed on the podium. Hamilton finished fourth ahead of Sutil, whose fifth place was his best season finish. Button, Alonso, Jean-Éric Vergne , di Resta and Räikkönen completed the top 10 .

The drivers' standings remained unchanged in the first three positions. Vettel expanded his lead on Raikkonen and Alonso. It was similar in the constructors' championship: the first three positions remained unchanged and Red Bull pulled away.

Comments from the first three drivers

“This win in Monaco is something very special for me - the feeling is simply indescribable. This fulfills a childhood dream for me: It is absolutely fantastic to win a race with a Silver Arrow on the streets where I grew up. I can't really grasp it yet and will definitely need some time to process it.
A huge thank you to my team for our car this weekend. It was nice to be able to show the same performance on Sunday as on Saturday and to convert our pole position into a victory. The entire weekend went according to plan, only the qualifying was a bit tricky due to the weather conditions.
I didn't have the best start, so Lewis and Sebastian were able to get quite close to me, but after the first corner I was able to set the pace. After that, it was just a matter of keeping a cool head during all the incidents. But the team always kept me perfectly informed about everything. Thank you everyone here on the track and at our Brackley and Brixworth factories. Hopefully this will be the first of many more victories for us. "

- Nico Rosberg

“All in all, I am satisfied and happy with the result. We know it is very difficult to overtake here. Congratulations to Nico, he did a very good job and had a very controlled race. I think he had the speed and tires to respond whenever we got a little closer to him.
I got off to a fantastic start, but there was no space! I think I could have got past both Mercedes, but there was no room and I had to slow down. Then Mark arrived and it was very tight in the first couple of corners.
I was a bit surprised at the slow speed on the first few laps - you usually expect two Silver Arrows in front of you, but today they were more like buses given their relaxed driving style for the first few laps. However, their strategy became apparent and they did a very good job.
Our team showed a good strategy that allowed us to get past Lewis. It was a difficult affair with the restarts, but we can be satisfied with the result. It was a good performance from the team, we seem to like this place. Congratulations to everyone and thank you to all of our partners - having two cars on the podium is very good. "

- Sebastian Vettel

“First of all, congratulations to Nico. It's a very special place to win and he had a flawless weekend. That's what you need here. Even if you start from the lead, you still have to implement what he did well.
As for us, we knew we were a bit behind as we started from the second row. But I got off to an amazing start. It's a shame that it's such a short driveway onto the first corner. Seb and I didn't have space to go anywhere so we had to take off the gas while Nico and Lewis seemed to have difficult starts. We are sure to have a few more of these launches in the future!
After that, it was mainly about protecting the tires and making sure that the one-pit stop strategy worked. Predictably, if the race were to be interrupted, two stops would not really be an option as it could throw you back into traffic. We had to drive quite a long time and all the drivers were easy on the tires - it was nice to crack Lewis at his stops. "
