Giedo van der Garde (born April 25, 1985 in Rhenen ) is a Dutch racing driver . In 2008 he won the Formula Renault 3.5 championship title . He drove in the GP2 series from 2009 to 2012 . In 2013 he competed in Formula 1 .

Career

Like many other motorsport enthusiasts, van der Garde began his karting career in 1996 and then switched to the Mini-Junior Championship in the Netherlands, where he won the championship in his second season. In the 2000 season, van der Garde drove in the Formula A and 2001/2002 in the Formula Super A . In 2002 Giedo was also a champion in this racing series.

For Van Amersfoort Racing , van der Garde started in the Dutch Formula Renault in 2003 and immediately finished fourth in the overall standings. He also finished sixth in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . From 2004 Giedo van der Garde gained racing experience in the Formula 3 Euro Series . In his debut season, the Dutchman competed for Signature . He was able to achieve two podium places and was ninth in the overall standings. In 2005 van der Garde stayed in the Formula 3 Euro Series and competed for the team of Formula 1 World Champion Keke Rosberg . Van der Garde was on the podium twice again and was also ninth in the overall standings. In 2006 he switched to the ASM team , which won the driver's title with Lewis Hamilton the previous year . Van der Garde was on the podium four times during the season and was able to win the sprint race at the Norisring . Finally he finished sixth in the overall standings and was beaten by his teammates Paul di Resta and Sebastian Vettel .

On December 15, 2006, the Formula 1 team Super Aguri announced that they had signed Giedo van der Garde as the new test driver and that Sakon Yamamoto was only number two. At the beginning of February 2007, van der Garde surprisingly switched from Super Aguri to Spyker after a few weeks , where he was used as one of four test drivers. The legal dispute between Super Aguri and van der Garde, which was based on this, continued because team owner Aguri Suzuki referred to existing contracts.

In addition to the test drives for Super Aguri and Spyker, van der Garde drove in Formula Renault 3.5 for Victory Engineering in the 2007 season and finished sixth in the drivers' standings. In 2008 he started in the same racing series for the P1 Motorsport team . With five race wins, van der Garde was able to secure the championship title one race weekend before the end of the season.

After his success in Formula Renault 3.5, van der Garde moved to the GP2 team iSport International , for which he competed in both the GP2 Asia series season 2008/2009 and the GP2 series 2009 . In the GP2 Asia series , van der Garde took twelfth place in the overall ranking. In the European GP2 series, the Dutchman achieved his first victory in the GP2 series on the Hungaroring . With further victories in Spa-Francorchamps and in Monza , he finished seventh overall at the end of the season. Only Nico Hülkenberg , who won the championship title, was able to win more races than van der Garde in the 2009 season.

For the GP2 series in 2010 van der Garde signed a contract with the Spanish Barwa Addax team , where he became a team-mate of the Mexican Sergio Pérez . To get to know the Yas Marina Circuit , the Dutchman also started for his team in the second round of the GP2 Asia Series season 2009/2010 and finished 34th in this championship at the end of the season. In the regular GP2 series van der Garde failed to win this season and three second places were his best results. Within the team, he lost the duel against Pérez, who was runner-up with almost twice as many points as he was, and ended the season in seventh place in the drivers' standings, as in the previous year.

After van der Garde's attempt to switch to Formula 1 had failed, he extended his contract with the Barwa Addax Team for the 2011 GP2 Asia series season and the 2011 GP2 series . In the GP2 Asia series he came third in the drivers' championship with a second place as the best result. In the GP2 series he took second place in the championship with five podium finishes over long stretches. However, since he did not score in the last four races, he fell to fifth place and thus also behind his teammate Charles Pic , who was fourth. He missed a possible win in Valencia as he was in the lead ignoring yellow flags and receiving a drive-through penalty.

In 2012 van der Garde took over the position of test driver for the Formula 1 team Caterham and took part in some free training sessions in this role. In addition, van der Garde competed for the Caterham GP2 team in the 2012 GP2 series . At the main race in Barcelona he won his first GP2 main race since 2009. With another victory and a total of six podium finishes, van der Garde was sixth in the drivers' standings. Against his team mate Rodolfo González , who only scored in one race, van der Garde clearly prevailed.

In 2013 van der Garde moved from the GP2 team to the Formula 1 cockpit of Caterham within his racing team. He was again a teammate of Charles Pic. On his debut in Australia , he finished in 18th place. His best result was a 14th place in Hungary . He finished his first Formula 1 World Championship in 22nd place overall and was defeated by his teammate Pic, who was 20th.

In 2014 van der Garde took over the position of Formula 1 test and substitute driver at Sauber . In this role he took part in some Friday training sessions. According to several media reports and statements from racing driver colleagues, Van der Garde had a regular driver contract with Sauber for the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship . The team took a corresponding option in its test driver contract on June 28, 2014 and received sponsorship money of 13 million euros. Nevertheless, with Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr , Sauber presented a driver duo without him. A few days before the end of the season there was a dispute between van der Garde and Sauber, as test drives that had been promised to him were also canceled. Van der Garde filed a legal appeal against his failure to take into account and was awarded the cockpit in a local court for the season opener in Australia . Shortly before the race, an out-of-court settlement was reached and van der Garde decided not to participate. In the week after the race it became known that the contract between Sauber and van der Garde had been terminated and that van der Garde would receive a compensation payment of 15 million euros.
