The 2012 GP2 Series was the eighth season of the GP2 Series . Twelve race weekends were held. The season started on March 24th in Sepang and ended on September 23rd in Singapore . Davide Valsecchi won the drivers' championship.

In 2012, the GP2 Asia series did not take place for the first time since 2007 . Instead, the GP2 series started again outside of Europe.

Rule changes

technical changes

From the 2012 season two tire compounds will be offered in the GP2 series. As before, the drivers have four sets per weekend. Three of them are from the harder and one from the softer mixture. 1 In the sprint race, the harder tires must be used, otherwise the teams are free to decide when which tire is used.

1 The race weekend in Monaco was an exception, when two sets of both mixtures were available.

Sporting changes

As of the 2012 season, the points system in the main race will again be based on that of the FIA , which is also used in Formula 1. 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 points are given to the first ten pilots. In the sprint race, the first eight drivers get 15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 points. In addition, there are four points for the winner of the qualifying, as well as two bonus points each for the driver who achieves the fastest lap of the first ten classified drivers.

Teams and drivers

All teams and drivers used the Dallara GP2 / 11 chassis , Renault - Mecachrome engines and Pirelli tires .

Changes in the teams

  • The Caterham Team AirAsia will compete as Caterham Racing from the 2012 season .
  • ART Grand Prix expresses the connection to the automobile manufacturer Lotus from the 2012 season more clearly and reported the team as Lotus GP instead of Lotus ART . Instead of being painted in British Racing Green , the team, like all Lotus factory teams, competed in a black and gold color scheme in 2012.
  • Super Nova Racing got out of the GP2 series for the new season. The team competed in Formula 3000 from 1994 to 2004 and was one of the teams that have been in every season since the GP2 series was founded in 2005. The starting place for the 2012 and 2013 seasons was awarded to the Italian team Lazarus , which was previously active in the Auto GP . The team competes under the name Venezuela GP Lazarus .

Racing calendar

Fabio Leimer in Monza 2012

In 2012, twelve race weekends took place, eight of them in Europe. For the first time, a GP2 race weekend was held on the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore. The races in Sepang and as-Sachir returned to the racing calendar, but the former took place for the first time as part of the main series. Both events were previously on the GP2 Asia series calendar. The German race switched from the Nürburgring back to Hockenheim . With the exception of the third event in as-Sachir, all racing weekends took place as part of the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends. The Istanbul Park Circuit was removed from the racing calendar and no event was held at the Yas Marina Circuit and the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari , where 2011 GP2 races were held.

All main races took place on Saturday and all sprint races on Sunday. The event in Monaco, where the main race was held on Friday and the sprint race on Saturday, was an exception.

  • The Scuderia Coloni was removed from the team classification for the race weekend in Silverstone and is retrospectively not entitled to points for the entire season. The trigger was Coloni's announcement that he would leave at the end of the season.
