Luiz Razia
Luiz Tadeu Razia Filho (born April 4, 1989 in Barreiras ) is a former Brazilian automobile racing driver . He became the South American Formula 3 champion in 2006 . He was active in the GP2 series from 2009 to 2012 . He achieved his best overall placement there in 2012 with second place. He drove in the Indy Lights in 2014 .
Career
Razia began his formula racing career in 2005 in the South American Formula 3 championship at Dragão Motorsport . With two wins and a total of six places on the podium, he finished sixth in the overall standings. In addition, Razia drove for Dragão Motorsport in the Brazilian Formula Renault and finished tenth in the overall classification. In 2006 he started again in the South American Formula 3 for Dragão Motorsport. Razia won seven races with eleven podium places and took the championship title from Mario Moraes and Diego Nunes . Razia also took part in three races of the F3000 International Masters for Charouz Racing . He won every race and was eighth overall.
In 2007 Razia switched to the Euroseries 3000 in Europe. First he started for Fisichella Motor Sport , but switched to ELK Motorsport during the season . He achieved four podium finishes and came third overall. In addition, Razia drove four races in Formula Renault 3.5 for GD Racing . Also in 2008 Razia started for ELK Motorsport in the Euroseries 3000. His teammate was Nicolas Prost . With two wins, Razia finished fourth overall in the Euroseries 3000 at the end of the season, while Prost won the championship.
In the 2008/2009 season of the GP2 Asia series , Razia competed for Arden International . After a poor start to the season, Razia took his first GP2 victory in the last race in Sakhir . In the overall classification, Razia reached 13th place. In the European main series of the GP2 series , Razia started in 2009 for FMS International, who had renamed themselves to PartyPokerRacing.com Scuderia Coloni in the middle of the season . After Razia did not score any points on the first eight race weekends, he won the sprint race in Monza and thus took his first victory in the GP2 series. At the end of the season he finished 19th overall. In the 2009/2010 season of the GP2 Asia series, Razia competed in two race weekends. He completed the first run for the Barwa Addax team and the season finale for the Rapax team . In the overall ranking he was 26th.
At the end of 2009, Razia was signed by the Formula 1 racing team Virgin Racing as a test driver for the 2010 season . In this role, he took part in an official Formula 1 test for the first time as part of the Young Driver Days . At the same time, he started for the Rapax team in 2010 as a teammate of Pastor Maldonado in the GP2 series. With three second places, Razia was on the podium three times. After he scored regularly at the beginning of the season, he then remained without points for long stretches of the season and only picked up more points at the season finale. While Maldonado won the championship title, Razia finished the season in eleventh place overall. He also completed a race weekend in the national class of the British Formula 3 Championship in 2010 .
In 2011 , Razia took over the position of test driver for Team Lotus in Formula 1. During the season there were considerations that Razia could make his racing debut for Lotus at his home race, the Brazilian Grand Prix . The racing team decided against it, however, as it was still fighting other teams in the constructors' championship. However, like at the Chinese Grand Prix, Razia was used in Friday practice this weekend . Razia also competed for the Caterham Team AirAsia , the GP2 racing team from Lotus, in the GP2 Asia and GP2 series. In the GP2 Asia series , he was 25th overall. In the GP2 series he finished twelfth overall with a second place as the best result. He also took part in the 2011 GP2 Final . He finished this with a second place as the best result in third place. In 2012 Razia returned to Arden International within the GP2 series. He won the season opener in Sepang and led the overall standings after this event. He then lost it to Davide Valsecchi . With victories in the sprint races in Barcelona , Valencia and Silverstone , he managed to take the championship lead again. At the penultimate race weekend, however, he lost the overall lead again to Valsecchi and Razia was finally runner-up with 222 to 247 points. Razia also completed Formula 1 test drives for Force India .
In 2013 , Marussia confirmed Razia as a regular Formula 1 driver. He had already been a test driver for the racing team in 2010, when the team started under the name Virgin. Razia received the cockpit at Marussia, for which Timo Glock originally had a contract that had been terminated shortly before. After Razia had already participated in the first week of testing, it was not used in the second. During the third week of testing, Marussia announced that it had terminated the contract with Razia due to problems with its sponsors. Jules Bianchi was introduced as Razia's successor. Razia then switched to GT racing and drove for Bhai Tech Racing in the International GT Open . Together with Chris van der Drift he once won the GTS class. The two finished the season in eighth place in the GTS classification, while their team mate Giorgio Pantano won this classification.
In 2014 Razia returned to formula racing. In North America he started for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in the Indy Lights . Razia won race two of the Liberty Challenge on a street circuit variant of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway . He was on the podium in four other races. He finished his first season in fifth place overall, making him the second best driver on his team. With 403 to 547 points he lost to Jack Harvey .
