Reports
background
Since the GP2 and GP2 Asia series are to be merged starting in the 2012 season , it was decided to hold the GP2 event on the Yas Marina Circuit as a single event. All regular teams attended the event.
On the driver side, there have been a few changes since the past season. 14 drivers who had not completed a race in the 2011 GP2 series competed at this race weekend and some made their debut in GP2. With Max Chilton , Marcus Ericsson , Esteban Gutiérrez , Josef Král and Luiz Razia , only five drivers started for the team for which they had completed the entire 2011 season. In addition, Kevin Ceccon and Stéphane Richelmi , who had run a few races as substitutes this season, stayed with their teams. Ceccon was also the reigning champion of the Auto GP . Dani Clos , Stefano Coletti , Julian Leal , Fabio Leimer and Jolyon Palmer competed in the GP2 Final 2011 for a different team than in the GP2 season. Fabio Onidi (Auto GP), Mihai Marinescu ( Formula 2 ), Jan Charouz ( Formula Renault 3.5 ), James Calado , Tom Dillmann , António Félix da Costa , Rio Haryanto , Nigel Melker and Simon Trummer (all GP3 series ) as well as Nicolas Marroc ( International GT Open ) took part in a GP2 race for the first time. Nathanaël Berthon , Jake Rosenzweig and Alexander Rossi (all Formula Renault 3.5) and Giacomo Ricci (no races in 2011) returned to GP2.
Training and qualifying
In the 45-minute practice session Gutiérrez was the fastest driver ahead of Leimer and debutant Dillmann. Ricci and Marroc attracted attention by ignoring yellow flags and received a 10-position starting place penalty.
In qualifying, Leimer secured pole position from Clos and Král. Dillmann was again the best debutant in ninth place.
Registration list
All teams and drivers used the Dallara GP2 / 11 chassis , Renault - Mecachrome engines and Pirelli tires .
