René Binder (2012)

René Binder (born January 1, 1992 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian racing driver . He started in the GP2 series from 2012 to 2016 .

Career

Binder began his motorsport career in karting in 2002 , in which he was active until 2008. Among other things, he was third in the German Junior Kart Championship in 2007 and second in the German Challenger Kart Championship in 2008. In 2009 he joined the Formula racing and went for the Team Abt Sportsline in the ADAC Formula Masters at. While his teammate Daniel Abt , who, unlike Binder, had already completed an ADAC Formula Masters season, won half of all races and won the championship title, Binder finished seventh in the championship with three podium finishes.

In 2010 , Binder switched to the German Formula 3 Cup at Motopark Academy . With a third place as the best result, he finished the season in twelfth place in the championship, while his teammates Kevin Magnussen and Jimmy Eriksson won several races. In 2011 , Binder switched to Jo Zeller Racing and competed in his second season in German Formula 3. At the end of the season, Binder, who did not take part in an event, was eighth overall with a third place as the best result. In addition, Binder took part in a race weekend of the FIA Formula 2 Championship . In 2012 , Binder completed his third season in German Formula 3 for Van Amersfoort Racing . Among other things, he won a difficult rain race in Spa-Francorchamps . With three wins he improved to sixth place in the drivers' championship. His team-mate Lucas Auer was runner-up. In addition, Binder took part in three race weekends of the 2012 season of the GP2 series for the Lazarus team. He was left without points.

In 2013 , Binder completely switched to the GP2 series, in which he continued to compete for the Lazarus team. At the season opener in Sepang he qualified eighth for the top 10 for the first time. In the sprint race, Binder achieved his first top 10 position with eighth place and at the same time his first point in the GP2 series. At the event at the Circuit de Monaco , Binder finished in the top 10 in both races. He was seventh in the main race and sixth in the sprint race. These three point placements were the only ones in the season. Binder finished the season in 23rd place overall. He got 11 of his team's 12 points that season. For the 2014 season , Binder received a GP2 cockpit from Arden International . He scored points in the first two races. No further points were placed in the rest of the season. At the end of the season he was 25th overall. Internally he was defeated by André Negrão with 3 to 31 points.

In 2015 , Binder switched to Trident within the GP2 series . Before the sixth race weekend, Binder contracted a streptococcal infection. Although he started for the race weekend, the doctors advised him to skip the following for recovery purposes. Binder then left Trident, who had problems with the Pirelli tires, without scoring any points. He moved to MP Motorsport to represent the injured Daniël de Jong , with whom he scored points straight away. He finished the season in 22nd place overall. In addition, Binder contested a Formula Renault 3.5 race weekend for Pons Racing .

In 2016 , Binder switched to Formula V8 3.5 , the former Formula Renault 3.5, and was given a cockpit with the Lotus team, which is managed by Charouz Racing System . He was on the podium five times with two second places as the best results. He finished seventh in the drivers' championship. With 161 to 189 points he was internally defeated by his teammate Roy Nissany . He also competed in one event of the 2016 GP2 series for the ART Grand Prix and Carlin .

Some of the members of René Binder's family were active in motorsport. His father Franz Binder won the Austrian Formula 3 championship in 1987 and his uncle Hans Binder competed in Formula 1 , among other things .
